43mm and counting at Baw Baw going by obs, there would be a huge amount of snow there this morning. If I wasn't working I'd be skipping uni to head up there for a look.

Wind just picking up now at Kiama/Gerroa. Was flat to the horizon 20 minutes ago. Now getting choppy and starting to get gusty. Ocean swell looks ominious. Big wide draw - still only half metre - but has that look of something big yet.

Eye of the low over Sydney? Almost looks like it's rotating neatly around the 256km radar.

Just having a look at the numbers -

Perisher dipped below negative temps last night at 7:30pm, and has remained that way all night and all day. In that time, 43mm of precipitation has been recorded in the gauge. Just makes me wonder how much snow has fallen, and whether @Normo should venture up for another slide :D

Would have been fun if they did an end of season charity day - but will melt fast once the temps go back up.

Everything is white, still puking, heavily laden blossom tree branches will probably start snapping with the weight of snow if it doesn't ease off soon.

I kept looking at nsw bom for forecasts of snow in the blue mountains and north and was surprised not to see any mention of the possibility.

UB- Thanks for that. This is part of our Summit to Sea program and we copped horrendous storms last year while we were at Grey Mares Hut and also Schlink Hilton. The river crossings of the Geehi and Valentine's rivers were madness! Our route is to go up onto the rolling grounds from The Schlink Pass and onto Twynam but if there is storm activity we will stay low.

Hopefully with the storms/rain it will keep the Snowy up above 1.5m!!

Quite an early spell of hot weather, too. Mildura is forecast to hit mid 30s for much of the next week, something we usually see in the middle of summer.

If this keeps up it could be a nasty summer. OTOH we say that mid spring and it ends up either being an average or really wet summer.

Good shear through the lower levels this morning, solid heating all day, so there is a good chance of storms this arvo, despite the energy being to the west of Melbourne. If it looks like this tomorrow then I would almost bet on some sort of show in the afternoon. I can deal with mid to high 20s through the rest of spring and into summer if it means awesome shows in the arvo.

ice_man - While you say 'quite an early spell of hot weather', usually we've seen a 30+ day in Melbourne by now, and we havent yet I dont think. Yes, it would be on the back of a strong Northerly and just before a change, but we usually see at least 1 day by now.

Was it a real 30? Or a 29.6? I think that was a Sunday right? If it's the day im thinking of I reckon it might have peaked at 30C for about 15 minutes before change, but anyway, 30C is 30C (unless it's 29.6C).

OK so according to BOM it was 30C flat. We average 0.8 days of >30C in October, so we might be a bit over that this year.

Strange enough my place had 28.5C as the highest this month, but that was on the 19th not the 12th.

Still looking likely CC? Only a light breeze in the SE subs this morning and already warming up (split system has switched from heating to cooling at work already). Vertical charts last night for Melbourne werent that great, but to the west they looked much better. Mid-morning should tell the story of what we can expect in Melbourne and surrounds today.

So far in October Melbourne has had typical October weather, if a little drier than normal, so I agree with you there. Adelaide's 37C yesterday was fairly extreme though, as was Mildura's 36C. The fact that the next week is looking similarly hot there is similarly noteworthy.

Not sure. I'm stuck in Sydney so I'm a bit out of touch today. Radar shows it starting to build in the north central. I have my doubts that it will reach down to Melbourne.

Positive buoyancy triggered at around 700hpa according to this mornings sounding. While that's not too bad, 750 or even 800 is pretty much a certainty for storms. There is a lot of CAPE available above the transition too. I'm confident of storms. Well, maybe i'm a little biased, but there's a good chance.
