    Hey guys,

I'm going to be staying at Perisher's The Station for my snow trip and we've got a motel room so we don't really have any cooking facilities and theres a ban of cooking (with your own appliances) in the motel rooms as well. Was wondering, what are some decent places to eat for breakfast and dinner near by or on the way to/back from Perisher?

The Station itself provides breakfast, both warm and continental, in their big cafeteria. They also have bistro food in the same place for dinner as well as a couple of restaurants, from memory.

It's been a few years since I stayed there so don't know how it's like now or even remember too well what it was like then.

I don't mind the kebabs near serge's either.

Personally I would do brekkie at the station (if its not too expensive).
Then head into JIndy for a meal.

Do not (IMO) eat at the bowlo or marios
    They are both mud.

    The bowl of is fine,

Marios however could not be bothered to open this season. Rumour has it he wants to sell.

Premium space for someone who does the right thing with it!

    Oh really?

    2 weeks ago it wasn't!

His manager (who ran it in his absence) left and apparently he couldn't be bothered to replace her.

Staff at bowlo want replacing, rude and incompetent is being polite. Will never eat there again, not that I managed to eat there last time after they misplaced my order (which according to staff was my fault. Sorry, you admitted you lost the docket but it's my fault, wtf?) and the response of you can go to the end of queue and it will be at least 2 hours until you get dinner frankly doesn't cut it after I've already paid and the rest of group have eaten. Never met worse front of house staff anywhere in the world. If it went to the wall I couldn't care less.

When did you last dine at the Bowlo @skinavy?

    New year, new staff.

Not saying it's perfect, but the odd time my parents have complained it has been dealt with swiftly!

Year before last and the new year new staff excuse doesn't cut it, management should be employing the right people and ensuring the training/performance of staff that interact with public is consistent year in year out (other places in Jindy do it, maybe the Bowlos thing is to be consistently bad). Management did f all when I complained so I'll continue to tell people not to go there, a 2 hour wait when they stuff up and you're a diabetic who has taken meds is unacceptable, and I did tell them I'm diabetic and it was still too bad you'll have to wait 2 hours.

Plenty of other places in Jindy that manage to have good service and food, Brumby Bar, LJH, Banjos. Bowlo is crap and would rather slam my genitals in a drawer than go there again.

IMO there is a complacency in jindy when it comes to service and food.
A few places punch above that.
I spend circa 2 months there a year , so i'm far from a local.
However I'm a discerning permanent tourist

Mario used to also own the motel next door , not sure if that is part of the selling price.
I worked for him briefly in the mid 90s and he had the kids and grandkids?? there .
I thought they would have been running the place by now.
Drop in there occasionally for dinner and was surprised to see him still managing?? the place.
The place is generally only open for the peak times( late June,July and August) and maybe a week or so in September.
Never had a problem with the bowlo and you get what you pay for. Compared to where we live for the majority of the year,we find the prices quite reasonable and the food is slightly better than the LJH.

$2.2 for just the Mineshaft lot only ..... LOL

Banjos = $10 schnitzel for double price
Bowlo = load ya plate up
    LJH = $10 schnitzel for +30%

Cannot split that lot for "value and quality"

Il Capriccio = fair price, nice food

Its all fairly average with a transient wait and cook staff to contend with.

Thats not what i meant - i meant that every year there is new staff so crazy to write an establishment off if last time you had a bad time.

This year the same people wont be working there!

Often the same hiring practices and attention to detail will be the same though. The management being the common factor.

The big problem with service consistency is consistent patronage. Until Jindy can attrack solid numbers all year round, the seasonal workers who come into the town will continue to have little concern for long term consistency.

Yeah but that applies to any small town that relies on summer or winter tourism.
Many of the small towns that are dotted along the coast have the same problem.
One day its a lovely small town of 3 or 4 thousand people, then 2 days later it goes up to 20,000 people for 4 or 5 weeks during the summer holidays.

been staying at the station for 4 years now.
The Char grill is ok value. But the Bistro is fairly average.
We went down for a summer trip this year and while there we had dinner at The Brumby. The only real difference between the two is The Brumby cooks for you the Station doesn't, so you cook your own on the grill, although they do cook the kids meals.
Other than that they are pretty much equal - the prices we paid in January at the Brumby were pretty much the same as those at The Station in August.
The Brumby does have a bit more variety on the menu, but usually there is enough variety at the Station to have a different meal each night with different sides.

Of course if your group is large cooking yourself is not a big attraction.

Agree and I live in one of those towns and grew up in the hospitality industry in Tasmania (which is a whole state of seasonal tourism). The good places manage to invest in their staff so that the can provide consistent service regardless if christmas or depths of winter. The also bring back the same staff year after year.

The problem with the bulk of places in Jindabyne is that they aren't run by hospitality professionals, but people who ended up in hospitality so they could stay in the town.

They don't have pride in their product (actually they don't even understand what their product is), they have contempt for their customers and unsurprisingly they don't have pride in their staff.

If you don't have pride in your staff you'll never run a good establishment, whether you really on seasonals or on longer term staff.

And sometimes managers are managers by default... (longest employee) not because they are a good manager (or good hospitality employee! )

It shitted me to tears when i worked in the industry... I had no respect for my managers cause they were dimwits!

When I worked at the TheThredbo Alpine Hotel i got pulled into the front desk managers office because i sent a 2 page fax for Gai Waterhouse (i charged her the going rate!) apparently the fax was a facility for guest only... FFS!

Gai Waterhouse... could you imagine the social media storm today if they refused that request today?

Not with standing that i believe a guest of Thredbo, is a guest of KT (and by extension a guest of the Hotel since ya know its owned by KT)

Don't entirely rule out eating at The Station. Sure there are some negative vibes in this thread from people (and one in particular) who have had bad experience there. I stayed there with my daughter (whose tastes are gold-plated) last month. I had the option of booking a meal package with the room (breakfast $13pp, buffet dinner $20pp) but declined it due to negative comments in previous years' threads about the in-house food.

The first night we were too tired from travelling to be bothered going into Jindy to eat. My daughter is a student living away from home on a tight budget, she mainly eats vegetable stir-fries and not much red meat. So we went into the char grill and had the special - a cook-your-own 200g steak, all you can eat cooked vegies & salad bar and a drink (Carlton Dry or cider schooner or glass of wine) - $22 each. Nothing wrong with that IMHO.

The second night she decided to give the buffet a go. Not sure how much it was, I scanned my Freedom pass for 15% discount, but I think the normal price is $25 or $26pp. Again, nothing wrong with the food. Pretty much on par with any other RSL or bowlo all-you-can-eat buffet. Those are typically around $20pp around Newcastle, so yes The Station is a bit pricier than average. But when you consider how far Jindy is from any metro area some of that premium goes towards freight.

Breakfast in the buffet is around $15pp IIRC. Usual fare, 4 or 5 cereals, bread/toast & vegemite/honey/jam, bacon, snags, eggs, tomatoes, baked beans, hash browns, fruit juice, fresh/tinned fruits, tea/coffee. No different to any other place I've stayed on or off snow.

Long story short, we ended up eating in-house for the 5 nights we were there and had no complaints.

By all means check out some of the recommendations in Jindy given above. I will when I'm back next month with my son (staying at one of the caravan parks). But maybe try one night in-house and see for yourself if it's to your liking.

One other possible option for breakfast is Rockit's in the industrial estate. Just off the Barry Way going into Jindy, you go past it on the way to the slopes. It's had some good raps this year. Not sure of the opening hours, maybe @dawooduck can help out here?

Im a bit like Donza in the area, kind of go there so much I dont feel like a tourist, but well aware I am not a local. I spend more time in Thredbo than Jindy in winter, other way around in summer. IMO his advice is bang on. I have been eating at Bacco for years, and remember the current owner when he was the sous chef. He tries hard with staff, it is always going to be problematic. Best if you can get some year rounders as the stalwarts.

The summer trade has been growing over the last 5 years, with a real jump every 3rd year, Woolies ran dry last summer. More places are reopening for it, so IMO over time we might see a more committed approach to hospitatlity, but it will be a while. In saying that, there are always some standout employees that I would like to see there every year.
