Surfed just north of bend-in-the-road (off North Palm Beach surf club) this morning early. Got 18 waves, 2-3', pretty good power - fast at the start of the session but slowed down and fattened up as the tide rose. Still good though. My son, my friend with the stuffed shoulder and her son (who are all on a doormat kick at present - sigh) got some little barrels, took some poundings, generally had a good time of it and the rest of us in our usual weekend group (surfing properly on real boards - wink) did well too.

South end looked pretty good too when I checked it later during apres-surf coffee but - due to a SLSC event and the ridiculously warm night preceding - there were even more people on assorted floating equipment in the water there than usual for summer holidays, so the level of chaos was too high to even consider a second session there.

So unexplainable, wind was pretty much O/S all day was not any real swell. Very very lucky person though.

Today was as much worse than I expected as yesterday was better than I expected. Had a surf though - most of the usual suspects are as silly as me, only one of the regulars turned his nose up at it and went home without paddling out. Anyway it was a foot a best, onshore rubbish, weird currents swirling and running up what faces there were on the waves, generally yuck. I lasted a bit over an hour and got 22 mostly un-memorable waves. All my friends managed to get a decent number too (quantity certainly over quality today), so we all got out of the water at least happy to have got wet and had a paddle and a bit of a laugh. Water is really really warm.

Went down to the 'Gong on the weekend

No waves on Saturday (well there were first thing Saturday morning apparently, but by mid arvo it was back to 1ft).

Went for a swim Saturday arvo then had a 'surf' Sunday morning in the occasional 2-3ft onshore crud at Woonona. Apparently the early was the go before the wind got up, then by 9am the onshore was powering.

Looks like that long period S pulse is coming through today....could be a few waves at select S spots this afternoon once the NE wind comes up

That's pretty much been the go all summer. One foot three foot one foot three foot. Before 9 has been the goods slip after that. But water has been great. Typical summer

Was co-erced into another session this morning (L-plater son enjoys the drive and the breakfast afterwards, with the surf being an added bonus). Only 1' at best at South Palm Beach - we had checked the north end first (about 6:30am, just after low tide) and no size or energy apparent there, just really short period waves turning sand over.

Anyway I grovelled 25 waves, had a pretty-much stress-free L-plate passenger experience down and back and a good coffee and fig slice too, so I shouldn't complain. Water was super-warm and prettty glassy, just a little too un-disturbed by swell :)

High tide draining coastal Inlet and Lakes kept us on our toes.
I pulled out 7 in about half hour on Saturday arv at Burrill . another 4 got pulled out yesterday further North of Molly.
Big tides , Narrow river mouths equals a lot of water compressed and screaming out to sea.
I was sitting on 15 k and stationary.......
Swell was up around 4 feet on South / exposed beaches but messed up with East winds.
Today looks good today pretty solid ,
Golfy had some sets coming thru tho I'm back at some real work.
Pretty buggered tho after 6 days on the Beaches last week , all day Saturday on the ski.
Office day . Out of the sun and wind ....

Sth Coast is like Hawaii.................it's "little" until it's big enough that your life is in danger. :D
That's what the old boys at the Marlin used to tell us whilst playing for beers on the pool tables (many many swells ago). LOL

Bloody S swells! We get enough of them in winter!!

SE QLD & Nth NSW seem to be experiencing a distinct lack of trade swell which they typically get at this time of year....

and that they where all ripping.
I knew there was another reason I didn't go it ;)
Meanwhile in a place not too far away coupla boys had another reasonably well known reef break to themselves.

Similarly, I was talking to my wife just last night and saying "when I was a lad" in the 70's and early 80's and spent a lot of time on the mid north coast of NSW you could always rely on the Cyclone Swells from about mid-January every year progressing down the coast from decaying cyclones. They just don't seem to be such a regular thing nowadays. Sure they still happen, but not as something you could just about set your watch by or plan surf trips around in advance with reasonable confidence.

Wouldn't mind an ECL, really just for the rain and relief from the heat.

I was at Terrigal yesterday afternoon and this morning. Can report it as flat yesterday afternoon (plus a few bluebottles) and even a bit flatter this morning and HOT and offshore. Had a bodybash yesterday afternoon, didn't take a board with me.

My Palm Beach operatives report flat and HOT also early this morning.

Looks like you scored on the weekend SASurfa?? I ummed and ahhhed for a couple of days about whether I should make the drive across or not. Chose not to and paid the price.

The hump was ok on Saturday arvo at 2'.. then surfed the mid again Sunday and scored glassy offshore at a similar size. Crowds were shocking though. I should have bitten the Bullet and gone across. Will know for next time.

I would hope it goes something like this ...

    Step 1 Gulp !
    Step 1.5 "Phuck" !
Step 2 Remember to breathe. I don't think bursting into tears will cut -it.
Step 3 head for the bottom and sing a happy song in your happy place
Step 4 pray there's not another one behind it.

Secret spot ! i like that ,, going back to the Marlin , we would frequent it a lot , in winter it would be only the fishermen and a few native indigenous types and us , a bit of interaction mainly mellow acceptance ,, in summer a different scene and now , i have no idea ,, we used to have that secret spot with 8- 10 people on it ,, less if it was big ,, fond memories

There are still a couple of genuine secret spots , tho may be semi known locally , but not to the masses

    We have a saying.....
If you thinking you're having a bad day go stick your head in the front door of the public bar and have a look around,
you'll realise you're not having a bad day after all. ;)

There are still a stack of genuine SC NSW secret spots further south which I am sure will be kept that way for a while longer yet given the very protective nature of SC NSW folk ;)

Being a local you get to know what spots work on specific conditions e.g. swell direction, tides, winds etc which will always give you a clear advantage over the out of town blow ins :D

Yeah I'm not sure how 'secret' the various spots are, I've found more in my last 5+ years in the area it's figuring out all their peculiarities as to when they work - #stilllearning ;)

PS: Next Weds GFS has the low on a more SE trajectory rather than the preferred projection toward NZ'd, oh well I'm sure they'll be waves for the Aus Day mini-break.

    Exactly.
So many of them are obviously swell /wind direction and tide dependant as we all know.
I'm still hearing about local waves , mainly slabs I never heard of.
Seen them in pics and asked the younger crew was it .... then they telling where and I'm like holy shit.
    Love it.
Yes next week going to be busy , extended long weekend and short week end of school hols combo.

@nfip you might be familiar with the good ol' Mark Warren's surfing atlas?

Still love that pic of that left about to slab and spit in the South Coast section, pretty sure where it is and it's in your 'hood and one of your ol' favourite spots. PS it's more known for being a nice long Right but on the right swell direction offers good lefts too ;)

Great book that. I've had it for at least 20 years and still pick it up every now and then. He gives good info without giving too much away. I wonder if you can still buy it? Would be a good gift for a grommet.

There's a thumping little wave magnet reef break we've been surfing for 30 years or more ,as a right hander down the reef into the bay, the groms all surf it as a slabbing left back onto the reef in opposite swell . when they told me I'm scratching my crusty old head in disbelief. A mate has shown me phone pics of his kids goofy foot dropping into it.
