Have your virgins skied at all before?

    Nice place to learn.

Get them thinking about buying boots versus renting

It is. The Extreme Team sort out the best optical illusions. ;)

BTW @Beerman and @Sam Paakki . Young Astro will be looking for some ski buddies. If your kids want to ski with other kids. Young Astro is the same age as both your lots. We should try and coordinate them as there is great timing overlap.

No never skied before and only seen snow in Central Park NYC. Yes to buying boots for the adults but not skis. I’ve suggested buying boots on mountain, which will cost more and possbly have less range, but they can keep going back to get any kinks ironed out. Thoughts?

My son will snowboard pretty much anything up to a black and most likely do some doubles this trip, so probably up for hanging out with others. But my daughter will be learning to snowboard after skiing, so will be off the pace I think.

I’m sure they will all catch up and have some fun like us!

you won't pay that much more in Sun Peaks than in Vancouver, its a different pricing model

There are 4 shops in SP that sell and fit boots so you should be covered

Best option IMHO. You've identified the key advantage of on mountain purchase: quick and accurate boot fitting. No need for elaborate explanation of where the pinch points are, you just pull off the boots and socks after a couple of runs and the fitter can see exactly where the issues are. They make the adjustments and send you back out for another two runs, repeat until the boots are dialled. There might be a slight price premium but well worth it for the speed and precision of the fitting process. Most people will have their boots sorted within one or two days using this method, leaving the rest of the holiday to enjoy their skiing. You should try to time your arrival at the resort to avoid holiday period like Christmas-New Year, and preferably on a weekday. Also suggest you make appointments at a couple of shops, the initial visit for selection and basic fitting is time consuming so you want the guy's full attention.

further, if you buy off-mountain, for a bit of a bargain, you will end up paying for your boot fitting on-mountain, and very rapidly whittle away any savings you thought you may have

And it will take longer shuttling back and forth to the off mountain shop. You'll have a less accurate memory of where the pressure points are. If you dont have transport this will he a big PITA and as Gareth says you'll end up paying for on mountain boot fitting which will eliminate any savings on the initial purchase.

Not having purchased new boots myself for 8+ years but seeing my son get boots a couple of years back; it seemed like the process with heat molded liners had changed things? I.e. the liner now is Made to conform to you foot on the inside but the outside stay relatively conformed to the shell?

So I thought as longer as your boot fitter picked the right boot to start with to match your feet with last, calf, width, etc then there trypically was going to be less blowing out with a heat gun and hydraulic punches, etc?

BTW, is this form different to:

There are also now a number of boots with shells that can be heated in an oven and moulded to your foot shape. These are great if you have unusually wide or high volume feet. And some boots like newer Nordica Speed Machines have a shell moulding system involving an infrared gun and suction cups, to make punches quicker and easier.

I suspect its a matter if how @ordinary” your feet are, and if the boot fitter carries stock that suits.

My boots took 10 minutes to fit with no heat moulding and are perfect, I could sleep in them.

Nikki on the other hand is now on her 3rd set and bootfitters still cant seem to get it right

So the protocol pretty much works out, that the planning and initial stoke is here. But the daily activities, I post at the other forum. As most of the onsite, in Sun Peaks people, monitor that forum.

The point of posting here is that many of the people I ski with locally in Australia don't monitor the other forum. So they can be super jealous of us smashing all the POW. LOL But some do enjoy just seeing what we are up to.

The other forum is great for finer details as well.

I post in both. You can post wherever you like. But if you just want to connect with onsite people in Sun Peaks. Then the other forum will serve you better.

I like how @Astro uses this photo of the kids burying him in the snow (ala beach style) while claiming its super deep POW he's skiing through. If only it had some audio along the lines of "Wait till I get my hands on you, you're dead meat".

Grandpa oh and computer programmer too.
Unfortunately I doubt I shall ever make it back to SP, in this lifetime anyway. Enjoy

Don't be in a hurry to get any pair and out onto the slopes. Invest the time in getting a make of boot which works with your structural alignment and stance to optimise that rather than just get optimal foot comfort, such as someone with an understanding of pedorthics might try to do. IIRC from this forum a couple of years back there was such a boot fitter Sun Peaks. Most boot manufacturers will follow a consistent set of assumptions across their models about the most common skeletal functioning but there will be people whose alignment means the boot shaft will be counterproductive no matter how much they are tweaked but for whom, maybe, there is an alternative make much closer to being a base to work from. Sorting this out can take a good deal of time for a boot fitter to analyse and think innovately about. For example they might even look at trying a men's boot on a women if in their judgement that will work better. Then come the footrest and then heat moulding pressure points. A good clue will be if they suggest you get a friend to ski behind you to get video of you so as to see the effect of the footrest dynamically and make incremental tweaks. That can take time but boots aren't cheap and the time is worth it.

It snowed in the Alpine overnight.
June is the wet month. Hope the rain continues for the next week as forecast. We need it.

Agreed, June needs to deliver normal moisture or this will be a very bad fire season

Seeing as its the first time I had logged on in ages  @Astro66 for the first pic - nice shot (its a keeper). Was that @northsail looking back at you? Knew it was one of you regular Sun Peaks crew just not sure who.

Just on this - haven't check MS's site for ages but knew he had moved off mountain. What was the story? End of season thing and will be back on the hill for next season or was the move off mountain permanent? Was just curious as I thought his aim was to be on the hill.

    Yep. It's Northsail.

MS moved to lower altitudes for health reasons. It's a long term move. He'll be visiting during the ski season.
