Most times we would have more than reported on the balcony rail. Not wind blown, there is seldom wind in the valley.

Their system of measuring gives an automated hourly measurement mid mountain but it is shite. It affects their snowfall numbers for sure.
When did they start using this method?

We have very good memories of Sun Peaks from last year, especially the runs on the Morrissey side. Wistful nostalgia ... And if you haven’t tried the 2,000 calorie cinnamon buns yet ....
I've been working my way systematically through the pastries at Bolacco Cafe. This is my last day, so definitely cinnamon bun day. BTW, I finally found a place to get decent vegetarian Japanese food - Sun Peaks! Had just about the best Japanese food I've had anywhere, including Japan, at Oya last night.

I’ll tell Miss 15 year-old-vegetarian that! Could be enough to tempt her back to Sun Peaks ;)

Hope you are catching up with @Taipan , he is a delightful and generous person !
Just spent the morning skiing all over Morrissey with @Taipan (except for the washing machine). You're right, he is a generous person with his time, his patience and his hospitality. Not sure about money - I forgot to hit him up for a loan.

15? have her put down - nobody will miss her, just tell the authorities she ran away.

Is she aware that she is doing all those cows out of a job? They are quite offended by her actions!! LOL
Err ... I was going to mention a few Sun Peaks vegetarians are on this thread, Gareth :p. I’m sayin’ nuthin’ ;)

Oya is absolutely awesome. Not only is the food great, but the range is fantastic also. They have someone for everyone. I ate there with a group of Poms who weren't very adventurous and had "safe" cooked dishes. I had a seaweed salad and octopus sashimi. :)

Unsure but longer than I have been going.
I asked Sun Peaks how they take snow fall measurements and this was the response.

“Our snowfall is measured at designated snow plots by lasers, which sends data through a dynamic feed. These numbers are checked manually each morning to catch any possible discrepancies; as with any technology, small variances do happen from time to time. That being said we’re very confident in our snow reporting process and the overall accuracy of information that we’re able to provide our guests.”

Odd, it's almost never correct, but nobody seems to care, because it doesn't overstate.

Just read that someone has submitted an application to the municipality for construction if a gas atation and cannibis retail outlet

Couldn't give a toss about the cannabis. It's legal. No different to selling booze. But the convenience store is desperately needed.

Bluebird Market runs out of all the staples weekly. It is so annoying that you have to coordinate with delivery, or miss out.

Of lesser importance but still an annoyance. The monopoly means they can charge whatever they please. Some things are reasonable. Some are extortion.

I think the community needs the service station if it wants to be recognised. Even Thredbo has one LOL. I suspect the one down at Heffly Creek wont be too happy

Be intesresting to see how big the convenience store is.

However its nearly 1.8km from the village so not really an ideal alternative for groceries unless you have a car, unless you catch the bus

Beats going to Kamloops, which is what I've been doing.

Regarding Fuel. You aren't using fuel when you are staying there. Even locals who have vehicles will be going to Kamloops for something regularly.

And if you fuel up in Kamloops. You're good for 500km. And if you're driving more than 500km. You'll pass a Servo.

The local servo will need to be competitive. I’m presuming the proprietor has done some homework on this

A worrisome trend may be developing for next ski season.

In the past few weeks, I was schooled on the massive effects of “negative gearing” in the hot Australian housing markets. Some of those I spoke with have several “investment” properties.
All with negative gearing and now with the unthinkable negative equity. With the impending loss of wealth, especially if RE values decline as they are expected, Will we see fewer Aussies in SPs? Even those who only have their principal residence, they’re all in the same boat as they ride down the RE market. The negative wealth effect.

This is occurring in real time in Vancouver. About to get a whole lot worse.

What are your thoughts on this? Want to hear the good and the bad.

Great skiing these days! Light snow falling so I must get out on the slopes.

I'm not based in Van but seems to me the fed and prov govt measures have cooled the market down without causing a rapid collapse - as intended. Speculators complain all the time but they have such high stakes plays going on that they are bound to get burnt sometimes. They had 5 years of red hot increases, plenty of time to take profits.

Neg gearing has been part of the Aussie scene for decades despite one or two attempts to get rid of it. I'm too far removed from Australia to have any meaningful comment there.

Impending government change via a “Steven Bradbury” style election likely win means possible scrap of negative gearing. I think it will mean a lot of people off load their properties it many won’t.

Doom and gloom and real estate collapse have been speculated for the last 20 years. My thoughts are that even if the worst doom and gloom predictions of a 50% drop occur, and I can’t see it, the prices will go back about 5 years.

For mine if that gets you in trouble you have over committed.

As for primary residence values dropping, and effect on aussies going skiing, do people really dig into their equity to go skiing?? Again this seems a silly thing to do.

No doubt property cooling off will stop some people spending but unless we get in a situation where the entire economy recesses, I can’t see a massive effect on people scratching the itch.

I sold my investment properties and used the equity to go skiing.

So Sun Peaks may be swamped with cashed up Aussies.

My 2 cents.

Realistically it is about what is important to you. Wealth accumulation, or affordable future housing for people trying to enter the property market.

Both are worthy pursuits. Unfortunately they act in opposition.

Negative geating wont disappear in Oz but it may be grandfathered.

I looked at buying a place in SP, which I’m able to NG in Oz

Provided I do this before any changes to Oz tax law I will be safe with the grandfathering.

Unfortuntaly I cant afford one just yet and I’m personally hoping that SP pricing will crash to horrible depths!!! Though this is not likely to happen before any tax law changes here

It's questionable what effect changes to negative gearing will have on overseas property purchases. AFAIK, they are not proposing to limit negative gearing for purchases of shares or unit trusts. It's quite likely you would be able to negatively gear Canadian real estate, possibly through an intermediary trust, if necessary.

I’m assuming the government will want to tax me if I’m positively geared? Surely they dont want cake as well?

A welcome dump of 10+ cm. Nice light, fluffy powder. Still snowing. Likely the best day of the season. The best of winter is yet to come.

On a more seriou note. The next great financial crisis is just around the corner. The Western world is drowning in debt. Pension plans are under funded to the tune of trillions of US$. Nothing new, been building since the last GFC in 2009 but nothing was fixed. More debt doesn’t solve too much debt in the first place. This time Taipan may get his reset. Ag and Au are sniffing out a sea-change. So real money is now being revalued higher. The powers that be can no longer suppress their price. It will be a slow choppy rise until the great unwashed catch on. Then the fireworks start.

In the meantime, enjoy your health, family and friends.

Did Japan this year in January and was some of the better conditions I’ve seen. All the locals apologised.

I am the kiss of death, so we get worst conditions ever, wherever we go. But these bad ones were some of the best I’ve skied. One day at cortina and a few days later in tsugiake, I was stacking it into 40-50cm light and fluffy powder and not a consideration it was going to hurt
