In Canada from 28th Dec to 25th Jan. May drop in for a few days after exploring a couple of other resorts.
JLA - 13 Jan to 3 Feb Expect to see the Stig crew as well Airfare, lift passes, transfers and accommodation secured. Now for the long countdown
I would love to, but following a recent major change in personal and financial circumstances I suspect it’ll be a home-based holiday this summer. Perhaps January 2021 for me with my children (minus miss teen).
I have wanted to post in this thread for a long time. So.... Izzy and crew (missus and 2 kids 9/7) - 8th December to 28th December. No accommodation booked as yet, but hoping to get some advice from you lot.
Because we will be there for 3 weeks, something more spacious than just a hotel room, with a bit of living space. Mid range priced - thinking around 6-7k for the 3 weeks including the expensive Xmas week. As a couple we stayed in Fireside in 2002, which was a great location, but within say a 10 minute walk to the village would be fine. Hearthstone family rooms seem to fit the criteria, except maybe the size. Can discounts be obtained by booking with owners direct for longer stays? Thanks in advance.
We stayed at Stones Throw 27Dec - 16 Jan season just passed. Highly recommend as ski in /out and plenty of room. Booked with Allura direct (website) and have done again for the upcoming ski season. Paid 6k for prime time, inc 2 bed hot tub, bbq, undercover parking, full laundry and kitchen If you want both ski in and out you must do your research, as some locations say they are both, but don’t mention the walk one way or another. It’s a great resort for families so you’ll be sure to have a good time Edit; plenty of space for a family of 4 or 5. I have a 16 and 14 year old both very tall and plenty of room for all. Edit; I notice you are going a bit early in the season. Just be careful you are not too early. The last season not all runs were open until the last week in Dec
I pleaded with the family for a January 2020 Summer Vacation that didn't require me to sell my soul to pay for. But they have beaten me into submission and demanded we return to Sun Peaks. What is it about this place ??? <shakes head> Airfares paid. Accommodation Locked In. Car Hire Locked In. Astro's all locked in. 16th Jan - 3rd Feb Staying at : Coast Sundance. 2 Adults 1 M17 Possible long weekend visit from The Newly Wed, Young Astro and Astrette.
Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I need to be back in oz by the 31st December, so an early season trip it is with fingers crossed. I see Gareth isn't going this season, so no doubt there will be a 2m base by season open...
Good to see early planning. Here's a Municipal Document that states the village's future intentions regarding lodging. https://sunpeaks.civicweb.net/document21248 The 2020-21 ski season may see an increase in the village core offerings. CC1 zoning may be strictly enforced. Thus, an owner would be required to throw their unit on the rental pile when not in residence. Not enforced presently. Was camping down in Washington State along the coast recently. Met an avid mountain biker from So California who told me that Whistler was the number one destination for mountain biking in N America. Then proceeded to tell me about the Kamloops area as an up and coming destination. Not being an off-roader I had no idea. The SPIN had a recent article about more bike trail development at Sun Peaks. I had no idea that people move to this area for the biking. Down in the valley, it's an 8 month a year sport as it's dry and warm and there are so many trails I never knew existed on forest lands. For those interested in what happens in the Spring/Summer here. I was on a 4 hour hiking club trek and took the first photo looking West towards Kamloops. You are looking at the junction of the TransCanade and Highway 97. Approx 2 hours later, as we were driving home, a fire had started. Different view of the same area but at a lower elevation. An early start to the fire season. Likely human involvement. No lightning strike on a beautiful day like yesterday.
Kamloops has had a thriving mountain bike scene for 25+ years. Some of Canada's top DH racers and freeriders have come from the Thompson region. In the Juniper neighbourhood there is the Kamloops Bike Ranch, a city-owned bike park with XC and gravity trails in profusion. It sits on a large section of the clay cliffs that are prevalent on both sides of the Thompson, the area is too steep to build on and the council wanted to do something about the unauthorised trails that were springing up all over the city. The Ranch is run by a non profit with funding from council and they have full time paid trail maintenance and building crews. There is also a large trail network at the Harper Mtn ski area as well as the extensive SP bike park. Added to the wealth of terrain and trails is the dry mild climate that allows for an 8 month riding season. No surprise Kamloops is a bike destination.
The more I look into the sport, the more I see how this area is ideal. Thanks for that info. Not about to embrace the sport myself at my age. It could seriously shorten my ability to ski. I'll stick to hiking the peaks and grasslands where the worst I can encounter is tripping over a rock.
Fireside Lodge booked 8/12 to 27/12. 2 adults + 2 kids 9 and 7. Thanks to all who provided advice. I hope I get a chance to ski with some of you fellow early season warriors. Izzy.
good stuff. Fireside is a little bit old, but still hanging in there, and a great ski-in/out location. There's a food outlet/bar on the ground floor called 5Forty who serve breakfas and food right through to midnight, and are also licenced. They do a great burger
New camera up for the golf course. [previously camera moved to the new orient lift and by the looks of it has now been replaced] https://www.sunpeaksresort.com/bike-hike/weather-webcams/webcams
Eventually tracked it down. https://sunpeaks.civicweb.net/filepro/documents/21245?preview=21248] "The 2020-21 ski season may see an increase in the village core offerings. CC1 zoning may be strictly enforced. Thus, an owner would be required to throw their unit on the rental pile when not in residence. Not enforced presently." Thanks for update on that. Wont get back this summer. Other issues require attention down under. Still a few little jobs will still get carried out around the house in my absence.
I'm not quite sure of the point of the golf course cam. It's great to watch at the start of winter so you can see the pond progressively freeze and the snow accumulate, but the rest of the year?
So just a heads up. There are some great airfares Sydney - Vancouver at the moment. Cathy Pacific is offering around AUD$1300 return via Hong Kong. Mid Jan to early Feb. Routes Car Rental out of YVR is offering a guaranteed SUV AWD for $690 for 19 days. Booked through Economy Car Rentals. And Coast Sundance is doing about $120 a night for 2 Adults - 2 Kids for 2 week stays in Jan. Includes kitchenette to eat in and save more money. This is absolute front row Ski-in Ski-out, right in the middle of town. Astro's (2A 1C) paying $9.5K, for Airfares, Accommodation, Car Hire, Season Passes with Lesson. For 18 days. This place really is the best value in Nth America.
Hey @Astro66, I think your maths are out. The extra flight to Kamloops and car hire etc. will add heaps to the overall cost of a holiday to S.P. Its a flat hill so plenty of others will want to visit elsewhere. Apart from being a nice town, I don't know why others would want to holiday there? I don't know why you keep going back there, Sun Peaks is below average.
Sun Peaks has a great golf course. Highest in BC. Summer has become an important season in Sun Peaks. On the right is the Par 5 10th, to the left is the short Par 3 17th. Back 9 is one of the prettiest i've seen anywhere. Im not in SP this summer (July/August) nor next year, but from 2021 i hope to spend about 2 months in summer each year from then on If your a golfer - 22 golf courses within 2 hours drive. And there are some really good ones. Then you have the visitors. (our back yard)
No but they do walk across the fairways and even greens. Heard a story of 4 players on the 9th, and a player was addressing his ball, a bear walked out of the bush behind him and proceeded to walk across the green beside the flag. Play was briefly delayed. I was on the 15th playing comp, a few years back, and had driven my ball to the right side of the fairway. My partner had hit his ball to the middle of the fairway about 10m short. He addressed his ball and as he did so, a bear walked out of the bush behind him walking straight across the fairway about 40m behind him. It paid 0 attention to us, so I allowed him to play his ball, which was a nice shot, just short of the green. I then told him to look behind. By this stage the bear was halfway across the fairway taking no notice of us. He was a bit surprised. You can play twighlight golf. You use balls that illuminate when you hit them. But the foxes love them. You’ll hit your ball down the fairway, and it will stop, but after a short while you ball starts moving and bounces across the fairway and off to the bush. Amusing
What are my chances of leaving my accommodation booking until December Keep in mind I'm looking at a fortnights stay in February....
