Great effort this season @Taipan. Certainly wouldn’t panic on the way home, fit and strong.

    Enjoy a safe trip home......

    Thanks Joe.

I realise how very lucky i have been to be able to ski the season.

Had some great runs and fun times with family friends and new acquientances.

    Looking forward to next year.

Might have to treat myself to an amber fluid in the hot tub this evening

To all the Sun Peaks experts.
Sounds like a great resort and worth visiting but I cant seem to get it to make sense financially compared to say Whistler with an Epic pass. Accommodation seems slightly cheaper than Whistler but when cost of lift tickets are taken into account ends up costing a lot more. Am I missing something here or is it worth the extra cost.

It's a different experience from Whistler. Far fewer people and much less glitzy, fewer options for dining and shopping, but less cost and drama too. Off mountain costs in Whistler such as parking, restaurants and other entertainment all cost well more than at SP. And SP has a lot more choice for ski in/out housing than Whistler does. Unless you have deep pockets, at Whistler you'll be walking, driving or bussing to the lifts. Take a look at overall costs not just the basic lift passes and accoms.

The mountains themselves are very different as well. SP lacks the huge dumpage and crazy big hairy terrain of WB, but it gets dry snow and very rare for it to r@in during ski season. WB truly has something for everyone, and lots of it. SP squarely aimed at intermediates, everyone else gets something, but not huge swathes of it like at WB. You can let your kids do their own thing at SP, you would think very hard about that at WB.

SP accommodation has increased over the last few years but I’d be surprised if it was even close to whistler. That also assume you a comparing like for like.

jump in early and buy an earlybird season pass at SP for around $700ish(?)

Isn't Sun Peaks closing as well? I saw on the facebook page that the staff accomodations need to be vacated within a week?

If you ski Perisher and use mates or 6 day ticket, its not that much more expensive to pay for Sun Peaks.

Walk up day tickets are not cheap. Early bird season passes are the best if you ski over 10 days. Also some of the loyalty card deals work out not badly priced.

Thats the reality of it, should the vaccine be implemented by Aug/Sep I can't see any reason why the season couldn't go ahead.

I think Aug/Sept is unlikely for a vaccine, unfortunately. 12-18 months is the norm, so hopefully by early next year ...

I must admit to having a long final tour and look of trepidation in the 3 days before I departed, wondering when I would be back to one of my favourite places. Very strange feeling.

I had similar feelings when we left Melaque a week ago. Those lovely happy people are going to take a pounding in the next 12 months. Even if the virus does prove to be less vicious in tropical climates, their medical system is not exactly robust and social distancing is a concept completely foreign to Mexicans. And the loss of tourism revenue is immediate and severe. Over a million Canadians returned home from abroad in just one week, a third of them from Mexico. Probably 8-10 times more Americans there, same outcome. And there is another 6 weeks of tourist season left, but almost all of those holidays are canceled, airlines aren't even flying. Semana Santa (Easter week) is pretty much the biggest local/regional tourism week of the year and the government has told everyone to stay home The money tap just got turned off, and hard. We're already booked for next year, but I fear for the locals we've come to know, and their families and friends too of course. They will suffer badly in the shrunken economy.

Im not sure norm applies here. There are a few megabrains around the world going around the clock on this at present; UNi Qld is a world trial centre that is working with five other world centres of excellence in close coordination. The normal scientific secrecy about getting work done on the sly and publishing as a ground breaking paper has gone out the window through necessity.
SARS is also a Coronavirus and there is vaccine that has now completed stage 3 trials. They will likely piggyback any new vaccine from that..

Property prices and rental rates have pushed up a lot in the last few years. Perhaps this ileads to a correction that may not be a bad thing (except for those who paid those high property prices).

COVID 19 is apparently significantly varied from SARS COVID 2-i.e. no similar characteristics. So as Lady Penelope states-12-18 months is the norm.

I have to concur on this account G_O - property has become so expensive in Australia that the young and for many - not so young - are forever screwed until a major correction occurs.

I wouldn't wish this awful virus in anyone. But it may well cause the big drop in real estate our society has to have for future prosperity?

I'm just wondering if I might one day be able to afford one in SP soon LOL

But we had a big reset in the GFC, but it didnt take long for property prices to recover and boom again - so I think the reset you are hoping for might be temporary at best

I am not really worried about a Vaccine, we just need a straight cure, medicines that stop that symptom of death! People in Seattle are already begun given drugs, human trials are underway. Fold in Brisbane are close as well. Another month I hope.
I think its time to buy a unit at Sun Peaks and live there for 8 months... Fly the family over for Christmas

Not sure about Sun Peaks with Joe and Taipan , maybe they are OK in person.
I heard good things about it from someone who went this year which was exceptional ?
I like the small resorts in Canada , Japan not flashy.

Unfortunately SP real estate pricing is still significantly higher than 2-3 years ago - I need a major correction or a lotto win before I can afford to snap up my plaything

What goes on the board stays on the board.
You will have a good time, families love it.
I wouldn't describe SP as a small resort, when compared to Japanese resorts that is.

Skied? Sun Peaks with my +1 February 2019 for 9 days staying @ Hearthstone Lodge. It was wonderful, good choice of terrain for any level and minimal crowd situations i.e. skiing, lift queues, restaurants or ski shops. Bumped into a few infamous characters, which enlightened the trip.
We then road tripped to Whistler (amazing drive through the end of the Okanagan Valley and across both ranges) to catch up with our son who has lived there for some years and our Sun Peaks experience from a skiing perspective was probably the highlight.
Do not understand the negative Sun Peaks rhetoric that regularly pops up, generally from spooks who haven't been there.

All season long there are seriously disabled skiers, blind and visually impaired skiers, people with terrible mental disabilities, people with terminal diseases getting their last few runs in, people skiing in their 90’s, all trying to just enjoy the wonderful sport of skiing.

And if i can make it to my 90’s and all i have left is runs like gentle giant, 5 mile, Styx ill still be grateful for that experience.

For the love of snow and the mountains
