I know this may be a little un related but what have property prices done in Sun Peaks over the past couple of years, at this stage looking more at hotel / apartment/ condo style.

Any views or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Property prices have gone up maybe 60-80% over the last 2-3 years.

Rentals have definitely gone up but dont have any data here

I rented the same place in ‘13 versus ‘18/19 so I will dig back and see how the nightly rate compares

Yep it is, we stayed there last season and are booked in there again late Dec for about 9 nights. The new chair makes access a whole lot better for that side of the hill.

generally they all come with M+S, you can request winter and even if you pay extra it's hit and miss. M+S are pretty good

Ok so we are at the very early stages of planning another Canadian adventure. Unfortunately work dictates that my travel times are close to Xmas so we are thinking 27th dec to 17th of Jan flying into Vancouver and hiring a car.

We are looking at at week at Silver star, a week at sun peaks and 5 days at whistler. Starting at Silver star then slowly moving to the bigger resorts.

What are people’s thoughts on accommodation, anything recommended, any locations to look out for? We want something with 3 beds no sofa’s closing to the village centre say 5minute walk.

All rental cars are required to be fitted with Alk Season/ Mud and Snow tyres.

They arent full winter tyres but will be more than sufficient for your needs.

Ive had these 5 times and Im still alive. Ive driven over the Coq and Rogers Pass in snow conditions

You can ask for winter tyres but there is no guarantee you will get them and if you do it will be another $30 a day

    Depends on your Budget.

In order of cheapest cost/luxury at SP. all in the village ski in/ out

    Cahilty Lodge
    Hearthstone Lodge
    Firestone Lodge
    Kookaburra Lodge
    Sun Peaks Grand

If you want a private hottub you will need a condo a little further out, but some still less than 10 minute walk and mostly ski in/ out

    Look at http://www.topofthemountain.ca/properties2.taf

Shows a map of the various locations pricing etc

Cage and Deb are very helpful

Contact me directly if you want any specifics

Thanks guys for your advice, it is much appreciated.
In brief, we looked at Sun Peaks for a week or so , but my wife suggested if we are going so far well we may as well make the most of it. So its 6 weeks now
Sun Peaks, Silverstar , Big White and the 10 day Whistler effort and of course Hawaii..

    Any suggestions appreciated.
We are there and back on frequents for around $3k for the 5 of us. The above unit is ours for a week. Chrissy in Silverstar.. still working the rest through..

Sue Thorley is excellent to talk to wrt Big White accomodation. She runs "ski holidays" and is excellent at flights and especially big white accomodation- she seems to know everyone on the hill.
I think she posts here on @Ski Holidays Sue or something similar. Certainly worth dropping her a line.

As good as the service at Top of the Mountain that @gareth_oau posted is, they are quite pricey IMO. Check out Allura Direct and Owners Direct for similar/same properties.
Also check out last years Sun Peaks thread as many service and Accom providers were listed on the Opening Post.

If you are a repeat visitor or staying for a long stay Cage at TOTM has in the past given a very different price to the one calculated on their website. Demand at SP hasn't helped the prices stay low :(

Bullshit. SP to Whistler was about CAD155. It did need a minimum of 4 pax to run, but that usually isn't a problem.

This one is really nic - Nik and I stayed there on our second trip

2 bedroom, 4 beds, 3 bath, private hot tub, and good quality furnishings.

About an 8 minute walk to the village, and ski inskiout via pathways to the new Orient chair

Just checked the cams for sun peaks.

7.30am. 5c in the village. -3 top of the mountain. Looks like a dusting up higher.

Been a cool summer so far in sun peaks.

Does that mean anything for the coming season? Not that I’m checking the long range forecasts 6 months before we get back to Canada again or anything ..

Just 11c at 4.00pm just 2c at Top of The world.

    Does it mean anything?

If it stays cool to cold all season? Yes.

Why? it means the ground will freeze earlier allowing snow base accumulation to start earlier.

See how warm it gets from now till the equinox.

    Interesting.

I will say last February was very cold. Then mid March it suddenly warmed up.

Last couple of years, but last year in particular, January February there were few times when the temps got above 0.

You can always spot that by the icicles on the buildings.

More icicles more freeze thaw conditions. Very few icicles last year.

Just cold for most of winter. [Nothing like Australian Alps cold. Many mornings in Feb, below -20

So the summer activity of paddleboarding on the lake might require a wetsuit and some mittens

for those who know more than me... if you had 2 families (4A & 5C all up), would you choose a townhouse 3bed with 10-15min walk to village (for eg: Crystals, Trails Edge, Trappers) and good ski-in/out and OR a 4 bed chalet with individual beds for everyone heaps more room but 20min walk to village (eg: Lookout Ridge)... if prices were basically the same for 10 nights ?
If you were to choose the chalet/house option... would you pick Lookout Ridge (East Village), Sundance Estates or Sunburst Estates ? Thanks in advance.

Id go for Crystals, Trails Edge, Trappers.

    Reasons. Ski-in, ski-out. Nothing better.
Ive stayed in Stones Throw - it was nice.
New Orient lift outside, meaning an easy return to home even for lunch.
Morrisey lift on the other side of the road.
Level walk to the village. Easy to go out to the pub or dinner.
Close to shuttle if you want to use that.
Reasonable distance for getting milk, bread etc from bluebird market.

Sundance Drive is good. Proximity to everything in the village is good.

Short walk to restaurants and pub. It is uphill of course for the return journey after a night out. [Magic Carpet runs till 7.00pm - if you go to dinner early - you can stand on that and it will take you half way home]

Great location and due to that reason you will pay for it. Ive stayed in 4124 about 8 years ago. That was nice.

If you look at Sundance Drive area, let me know what number and ill know the house and the plus and minuses.

I wouldn't go to lookout ridge or Sunburst estates due to distance. They are further away and unless you have a car, it can be difficult getting backwards and forwards at night. If your happy to just hunker down and not go out much its an option.

For Canadians with cars it is a much easier option for them to stay in those areas, especially as they are used to driving in real winter conditions.

Lookout ridge offers some nice large, classy places but its a long way out without a car and may be subject to a lot more snowmobile noise

A bit closer in the same area is Bridgegate if you want something large and classy

depending on your budget, have a think sbout this one. Ski in/out and 1 minute walk to Orient chair, 10 minutes to the village

Well, I’ve bitten the bullet and booked a few weeks in Canada for January 2019. Sometimes when life throws curve balls at you, you just need to hurl a few back! Staying at Silver Star (Silver Creek Lodge) from 12/1 - 16/1 then driving to Sun Peaks where the boys and I have to split our accomodation between Coast Sundance and Hearthstone Lodge. There until 31 Jan. We fly into and out of Kelowna this time. Transfers were eye-wateringly expensive, so I’ve hired a car through airportrentals.com (only a little more costly). Looking forward to catching up with those of you I know (sunglasses at the ready for @Astro66 :)) and those I am yet to meet.

Edit: oops! Obviously losing my memory to boot; just realised I’d already posted trip plans in this thread. I’m just too exited!

Yes, but you were sorting out transfers. Glad to hear you have backed yourself and are hiring a car.

Besides, I'm looking forward to seeing your ice driving prowess, as you chauffeur me to pick up groceries. Please set Climate control to 22.75 degs please. :D

Hang on ... do you think I’m Parker? :p I’m looking forward to driving a more ‘normal’ sized car the time (a Ford Escape, downsizing slightly from the Ford Expedition Platinum nightmare I drive last time).

By the way, does anyone know if the price for a car booked through airportrentals.com includes GST and other taxes? The price quoted is in Canadian dollars, to be paid to the company (Avis) directly, but neither Avis or Airportrentals.com can give me a straight answer on the tax situation .... @gareth_oau ?

All of the options you have listed are doable and nice, it just comes down to where you want to be located. Prioritise your needs. Do you prefer a quick walk to the village the most important, or room to move, or ski in/out??
Many places in Sun Peaks claim both ski in AND ski out, Trappers, Crystal Forest and Trails edge are ski in only, not out, (although a couple of Condos maybe ski out as well) This may, or may not be important to you. Use Google street view to help with getting a feel for the place.
If going for a house, i would be inclined for Sunburst over Sundance, as feedback i've had indicates groups of 20 somethings can turn Sunburst into a bit of a party house zone. Although this may suit you.

I get a lot of rental vehicles for work. Usually these are booked through one of the majors, not a booking agent. With that said, my 3 x US and Canadian car hires i've had this year all had tax included in the quote/price.
Obviously when you get there they will try and upsize you, which you should avoid at all costs if possible.

Just 14c this afternoon in Sun Peaks.

Forecast that it is warming up next week. Last week of July.

For Canada, summer is half over.

This is what we booked last time and ended up with the dodge equivalent which was pretty good.

Cant answer that one. I think the advertised prices is all inclusive but not 100% sure.

    How many of you travelling?

We have driven a Ford Escape and its a nice "little" car, but found it snug for 2, but would be inadequte for more.

Suggest you look at a Jeep Grand Cherokee, or Toyota Highlander for the next size up, but not in Expedition/Durango/Suburban category.

If you decide to stick with the Escape, make sure its AWD, as they do oofer both AWD and FWD, and its not easy to confirm online which you have actually booked.

Also make sure that your price includes CDW or Coillision Damage Waiver, otherwise your insurance will cost you a whole lot more.
