We few taswegians don't seem to have our own thread so here is one. It will probably only be me posting but hopefully some others will chip in. Seven days of showers forecast for the NW coast and 6 days of snow showers on the Ben. I doubt there will be enough accumulation to get the tows running but its a start. Watching the snowcams with interest
Oops sorry could not work out how to put Observations at the start of the thread title did not come up as an option..... @Claude Cat can you help?
So much for the afore mentioned rain..... a very light shower over night but otherwise just damp and dewy. No action on the cams either, just low cloud at the Ben.
As small and remote (from NSW!) the Tassie fields are, I still want to have a look and ski. Any slide is a good slide Good luck with this thread, I'll be checking in!
It's been pretty bloody dry to be honest so not much action to report there. There is however something in the forecast for the back half of this week which will almost certainly provide some snow for Mt Field. It doesn't look much at this stage but we'll see. Last year in late July we had a lovely dump. Fingers are crossed.
Not as wet as forecast yet but its supposed to hit big time later today It looks like The Ben is getting some wintry mix but its a bit hard to tell.....
Oh what a wild and wooly night. Flights cancelled in and out of Devonport and I suspect the big red boat would have been a chunder bucket. Nice to see the Ben with some white action.....
I spy some flakeage on the Cradle Mountain cam, not settling yet but fingers crossed. I might be able to go and ski the Ronnie creek boardwalk again this weekend.
Occasional lurker around the weather forum here, former posting pest, currently living in Westbury. Nice to see some Tas content now that weatherzone is going. Has been wet through the north recently, most of the rivers are 'flooded' (up near minor flood levels). Some light snow on the Western Tiers this morning. Reports of upwards of 10cm around Miena. Some moderate to heavy snow forecast for the central highlands on Sunday, especially around Lake St Clair and the Walls of Jerusalem.
Poor old Deloraine does tend to cop a bit of a wetting. I wonder if the caravan park is going under this time.
Well its very white on the cradle and mawson cams and it was nice to see s bit of white on the top of mt Roland this morning. The view from my back door step.....
Quite a lot of snow over the highlands (75cm at Mount Mawson), but temps today (and last night) well above 0 above 1000m (Liawenee nearing 5), so snow melt will be pretty high until it cools again tomorrow. Quite a few bushwalkers etc have gone missing, most of whom have been found, choppers checking in on walkers in the Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair region (overland track). A friend reported more than 30cm on the eastern (drier) side of Great Lake yesterday morning.
It was a balmy 14 degrees driving to work this morning along the Bass Hwy according to my car. No wonder Mt Roland has lost its nice white blanket
Yes, very mild in Hobart as well. Last nights minimum was 10.9, and it has been above 0 on Mt Wellington since 1pm yeserday. I expect there is rapid snow melt going on at present across the state.
Obvious from the cams that Mt Mawson lost a bit in the past 24hrs or so, particularly after such a good dump
I'll be keeping an on this thread, snow or not. I have two Grandsons and family in Launceston. Will see if I can find some flood pics of The Gorge from a couple of years ago, was truly "awesome"
No, not enough for the caravan to go under. More light snow over the highlands last night, Western Tiers had another dusting to 800 or 900m. Bits 'n' pieces forecast over the next week, scattered showers/rain with the odd front pushing through, but nothing stands out as substancial at this stage. Even the frosts have been held in check of late (was a lot through June, at least a lot in land where I am).
Yes had some wicked frosts here too in June just 3 km from the coast. Steady rain here and it feels cold enough for another dusting on mt Roland, I'll see what the morning brings.
June 2016 flood, The Gorge and First Basin. Before and after. Those pics of the river at Deloraine got me going.
heavy snow for Benlomond yesterday and overnight has things looking great maybe 25-35cm+ in total . ski lifts opening from today , weekend should be great with more snow on the way on friday
Think I'll finish July with 112mm, been a relatively mild month, less frost than normal, but more wind and cloud. Rain a bit above average, but 40mm less than 2018. Looks like a week of frosty weather, but with the odd bit of cloud and wind at times (as cold fronts try and break through the ridge) which may stop any really hard frosts from occurring. The snow Ben Lomond scored last week was washed away last Friday, but there is still some patchy snow, Mount Mawson fairing a bit better. Not much else to write home about, a lot of the online stuff over hypes the potential for snow (like today was meant to snow to 700m, might have been cold enough, but very little moisture in it as far as I can tell)
That's really cool. Shows why the east coast is so dry with the rain shadow from the mountains in the west.
Quite impressive that one, specially as most of that high country is only in the 1,000 to 1,200 metre elevation range. Space satellite movies, just incredble really.
Gray, Tas has had 152mm of rain since 9am yesterday. It's wettest September day on record. Eclipsing the 1959 record of 143mm.
It did look like there was going to be a little more in the tanks this AM, but a solid drop nonetheless.
Was looking at the sat pic yesterday, heaps coming in from the NE. Hope there's not a repeat in a couple of weeks, am planning to fish the upper South Esk. Cool temps, OK. Saturation, not OK.
Check some of the plots on this page, https://dpipwe.tas.gov.au/water/water-data/river-flow-plots-(sites-m-z) Some serious spikes !
All quiet on the North Western front. A solid inch yesterday in Devonport and there is water sitting in many of the paddocks. Still patches of white visible on Black Bluff but no fresh to speak of. Must have been and East Coast event. Walking into Liffey falls up the Meander River tomorrow, should be a nice drop of water coming down the cascades.
Some fascinating rock strata down there just above the falls in the creek, looks tiles had been laid to make the creek bed.
Yes its called tessellated pavement and looks man made but its a natural phenomenon of the crystal structure of the rock as it cools. There are good examples at the Tasman Peninsular out east also. Its a walk I do a couple of times a year along with the Anniversary Bay circuit at Rocky Cape. Love a bit of geology as I exercise.
The lower Liffey Falls two days after an inch of rain..... The stuff that looks like snow is actually tiny water droplets floating in the air, absolutely magical. The same falls with me looking like a dork back in a dry January.
Huge crack of thunder last night shook the whole house. Just met up with a friend from Gunns Plains and he said exactly the same thing and that's about 40kms away... Now pouring, a real spring storm.
A couple of good pics there, ta. My "return to Liffey Falls" not far away now, we'll be on the Spirit next week and looking for some spring weather this trip. Have flogged my data allowance pretty hard lately with google earth, finding more places to see (and fish).
