So have been taking advantage of the tax free offers around the traps here and my passport is getting thick with receipts. I often don’t bother in other countries to claim tax refunds at the airport because the lines tend to be long and the refund too small but the system in Japan where the tax is deducted at purchase is great. Question is what happens when you go through passport control, do they need to sight the products?

When we went through Nagoya airport just recently there was a bucket to throw the receipts into. No claim back as I’m guessing the tax was already deducted when we purchased our goods. I could be wrong though.

Edit: sorry, just re-read what your actual Q was...duh. Yep, can’t say there was much fuss or checking going on. You should be fine.

My D16 bought a camera lens in Tokyo 2018 [thanks Sandy ] and Nike runners  they didn't blink an eye coming through, but could depend on how much you spend or the person at customs

Good to hear. The last shop I bought stuff tax free gave me an flyer which says you need to be able to produce your tax free goods on request by a customs official when leaving the country. I was trying to work out how I was going to produce the grocery items I bought at a supermarket in Tokyo a week ago.

That paperwork in the shops on the TF purchases is super tedious, particularly when you're running a bit short on time getting to your domestic flight. I was almost tempted to just throw cash at them and forget about it on my second purchase today.

What I find bizarre, you're leaving, passed immigration, and want a snack (e.g. Chocolate bar) next to your departure gate, and they package and seal the damn thing, telling you not to open until you leave Japan!!

So those tax free groceries I bought and consumed in Ueno will see me do time in the slammer?

We’ve purchased a few bigger ticket items this trip and have paid full whack including tax. Have receipts but didn’t show passports or get special tickets stuck into passports at time of purchase as I wasn’t aware of this. My question - is there anyway to claim the tax back to Narita Airport (probably a couple of hundred $$) without these?

No that I'm aware of. Need to do it at an official Tax Free Japan shop.

Exactly, not all shops are tax free. Its quite involved to get your shop set up for it.

Last year my passport was so thick it became impossible to close. I started taking some receipts out and held onto them upon arrival at customs. They didn't even bat an eye and told me to throw all the receipts in a bin allocated for the receipts.

    BTW, it's 10% now, instead of 8%.

    Hi,
Based in South Korea, just bought a new board tax-free in Tokyo and got the multitude of paperwork stapled to the passport.
My original plan, which now I realise might be semi-illegal was to use the board this weekend, then send it to Hokkaido with Black Cat to use in 2-3 weeks (I have a friend there that can pick it up) and fly back to Korea i.e. exit the country and then fly Seoul - Sapporo in few weeks.
Do you think I should do it or I better not risk it and take the board with me out of the country and back in after?

    Thanks!

I bought something tax free for my wife in Tokyo a few days ago. They stuck the tax free ticket thing in my passport. I asked what I had to do once I got to the airport. Their response was to do nothing. Hmmm. So I tore out the tax free ticket thing. Thet are using smart gates at emigration at Narita (T1) now. There was really no one there that seemed to care much.
As an aside, I paid full price for the item then was told to go upstairs to get my tax-free refund. A bit like how they do it in Germany. I got the tax-free amount paid in cash.

Hah. The desk you're supposed to take them to in T1 is against the back wall, just before you go through the passport check. It does just seem ceremonial though, there's probably a shredder under the desk.

Yep I left through Haneda, there was a guy at the tax counter with a basket who just asked me to pull out the receipts and put them in the basket, didn’t even look at the passport or receipts.
