Guess I'm going to have to have to repeat this a gazillion times.....

The road past Perisher to CP is under CPV control between QB & October LWEs. Road will not be cleared until after October LWE and most likely mid October when the plough operators get back from their season end couple of weeks off. There are some 2 metre deep icy drifts across the road that will take a bit of work to clear (i.e. the grader will not do the job).

Why dont they move their break two weeks? Clear the road, then have a break?

they are either for us, or aginst us!

Two weeks or so for those with a eBike to put it to good use.

Because the snow clearing crew have been on call since QB LWE, so post October LWE is the first opportunity to have time off..... and yes it pisses off the CP lodge managers as they cannot get up to CP to clear out for the season until mid October.

So funny this thread has started. This morning walking the dogs I was thinking that I need to add 'dad club lake day' to the family calendar for the weekend of 12-13 October :)

    October 13 2018.

I think snow levels were similar, LWE a week earlier. They cleared it remarkably quickly. So I’ll go for Oct 18 this year. Though the Jindy club have their annual ride planned for 13/10, they may have some inside info.

Tradition, we have this thread every year.

I've just preempted people who care or might be stressed out by this question and NEED and answer.

I hear CP is actually open and with oversnow available all through the long weekend? That's actually pretty cool. A drink and maybe meal at the Chalet after a day out...a possibility?

I still think (sigh) they should plough the road throughout winter. I'm not saying they should salt it down to blacktop - leave it white. I'm not saying they should open it to the public. Just push the snow out of the way and run a regular 4WD vehicle for transport. Yeah yeah everyone wants the magical journey, you could still run a cool old UniMog or big yellow school bus or something. Just not the expensive furphy of a tracked vehicle.

Sounds extremely sensible and cost effective. Probably won't happen? Did the oversnow thing this year and it's a bit ridiculous. Feels like a military operation taking you out to the front lines, when it should probably just be a bus ride.

It is a condition of the new lease that the resort is open from QB to October LWE.

Poor bastards must be rooted from all that sleeping at Wilsons whilst on call for the season, in between those 3 or 4 events that they actually worked.

I can't quite recall how the runs off Guthries and the access road intersect, but at the back of my mind I have a feeling that it might be an issue. It is certainly a problem if you clear the road to the turning circle.

Anyone with a brain would have the road open and cleared at least for authorized vehicles year round.
    Prolly a National Parks thing.
The oversnow is a PITA and very expensive to purchase, currently $105 return and probably expensive to operate.

CP village access road runs behind the Guthries poma. The road to the turning circle is currently being skied on and runs across the poma line. As the resort is required (under lease terms) to be open to the October LWE and as CPV has control of the road past Perisher between QB and October LWEs (under the lease terms), there is no way the road will be cleared early.

See above. All to do with the lease between NPWS and CPV.

I started this thread last year  and possibly the year before that too  ,I think. I have been robbed o_O of the chance to start it this year ;) but I am planning to XC ski up there and out over the Main Range once I can get the car up to the turning circle at C.P. .

Just because they need to have snow on the runs at CP, doesn't mean they can't clear the road from Perisher up to where the road heads down into the village.

Well you were just too slow. Maybe because you are doing such an awesome job of getting out and about that I can't keep up with your reports. Which is all a good thing.

Don't worry about the drive and car park, just use the over-snow Perisher >< Charlotte Pass instead until the long weekend.

I rang the resort at C.P. today. They said it is costing 60 clams, return. Only on Thursdays is this lower price available , but the over snow service costs the said price as quoted by the O.P. every other day .On Tuesdays in spring the Resort at C.P. is trying to entice visitors who don't want to ski up from Perisher with a pay for one adult and bring another person free kind of offer.

I don't think I can afford the Over snow service this year. There is still a lot snow to ski on in the K.N.P. so as of Sat. week I will find a few ways to fill in 3 -4 days of Nordic skiing in the K.N.P.. . The cost of petrol is considerable esp. if one is driving up to 1000 KMs a week to ski , all season ,wherever the fresh XC snow can be found.

There is so much snow. I have never seen such a complete cover in the KNP BC at this time of year. But I'm also a beginner at the game in comparison to others.

This they will do, regular scenario is clear to Spencers Creek prior to long weekend if cover is thin. Road stays closed except for CP vehicles. CP do a change vehicle stop at Spencers Creek.

After long weekend (Tuesday) road is open to Spencers.

The road to the CP car park is open a couple of weeks later.

The cover on the road from Spencers as at 10/9/19 when I was last on the CP shuttle was not too deep varying from a metre at Spencers to zero about Guthrie Creek.

So I’d be hopeful of the scenario noted above playing out or doing so a week later than noted now Perisher are extending. There seems to be a plan to avoid having folks drive to Eyre except in the exceptional year when that was the only way to get there prior to long weekend closing. Which means even tho the road might be clear to Spencers it is unlikely to open for all until Perisher closes.

I had a chat to a guy in the perisher carpark this morning. He wasn’t waiting for them to clear the road before riding his bike up. He had a fatbike with rack and panniers, and a backpack. Taking his skis and kite gear up the road past charlotte’s:) He said it was hard work;)

I didn’t know that. I see people riding up a fair bit, as well as walkers, snow shoes etc. Also obviously lots of skiiers as well.

I knew bikes were banned from cross country trails. Also not allowed beyond rawsons pass in summer

Start early and just XC ski up. I will be up that way in a week. I just might try to do that because I cannot afford the over snow service. It should snow a bit before 22/9/19 so there should be enough snow to do this.
