My sister is tripping around on an Epic Pass and having a great time but was kind of blown away by the $US189 ($A260) day pass at Vail.

I wrote a bit about it:

    http://thesnowgauge.net/australia/would-you-pay-us189-for-a-days-lift-pass/

So the question is does the best value season pass justify the worst value day pass in your opinion?

PS: Her husband subsequently just told me they wanted $US249 for a half day kids group ski lesson. Wow! Is it becoming just like the airlines where your base product represents good value but you get stung every other step of the way?

Trying to get the locals to buy season passes and the travellers epic passes so they vist more of their resorts during their travels id guess.

Its pretty crazy though, kinda writes off Vail for a stop-over unless you have coin to burn

It's not crazy, it's just a business strategy. One that appears to be working very well.

"Crazy" from whose perspective? Vail's? I doubt it. The only thing crazy about it is if someone actually pays it.

Isn't that the point of Vail?

Seems to be working as a business model but does the average person just forgo just about everything else associated with the resort? A $A350 half day group lesson is hella expensive!

The point is to have the overwhelming majority of people who ski at Vail hold an Epic Pass. If someone rocks up and pays exorbitant day ticket prices, it's a bonus.

Vail don't do half day group lessons. A normal kid's full day group lesson is US$200 I think. Ski lessons in the major US resorts are very expensive.

BTW, day lift ticket prices at other Coloradan resorts that don't offer really cheap season passes like Aspen and Steamboat aren't that much better.

So they don't want daytrippers. They want people staying at accommodation.

Surely season pass holders are daytrippers in big numbers?

And they want the largest share of Front Rangers possible.

The whole point of the Epic Pass is to make season-long skiing very cheap so that it is hard to resist.

Copper has a pretty similar approach. Walk-up lift tickets are USD150, although closer to USD100 online. Cheap season pass though and plenty of options (such as the combined Winter Park/Copper pass that also includes 6 days at Steamboat, 3 at Crested Butte and even 7 days at Cardrona for about USD500). Competition is fierce!

    Still probably go there myself

Well they do have to cover the high instructors wages...oh....wait.....

(Actually I was very well paid by Vail in 98/99/2000 but things have apparently changed a lot)

The Heavenly-Northstar-Kirkwood combo was pretty good. Did it last season. Prices still not bad at Kirkwood in particular. Expedition Kirkwood did a three-hour lesson/mountain tour for two people and it was $180 in total from memory which I thought was good.

You'd want a lady to take you out for the day and snow blowey's on demand for that sort of coin.

Park City day ticket is only US$126.
Could be A$126 at Perisher this year?

Exorbitant day pass makes multi day passes look like good value, multi day skiers are around longer to spend more coin. As others have said, Vail seems to know what they are doing.

The serious skiers and boarders will get a Mountain Collective, the ones who think they're serious get an Epic pass, the misanthropes and romantic idealists go and ski the backcountry, and the wealthy families have the money to do whatever they really want when it comes down to it.

This leaves beginners of moderate means who want to try out skiing. They spend a $500 on lift lesson and rental for a single weekend in addition to exorbitant mountain town holiday costs, fall on their arse a lot, say "well that was ok but a bit of a ripoff, I'm going back to my Crossfit gym and ultimate frisbee league". And the ski industry and community continues to flatline.

    Exactly.

Don't want to pay, go to somewhere like Lovelands.

You've got choices in the US. Make one.
