    Calling @Telemark Phat

You did your Alpine L3 this season? That means you must be at least half as good at Alpine as I would be, if I bothered to have a go at it.

So my question is, which do you now prefer, and why?

I am wondering if the reason I prefer tele, is because my teachings from Alpine are over 30 years old, and I have only done one day on them in the last 34 years. Would my mind be changed, if I actually learned how to do it properly?

My legs get cooked skiing with good Alpine skiers, and my only justification is that it feels better?

An update on the tele technique might help. But may not get you where you think you want to go chasing the lazy ones.

    Drugs or surgery?

I would do my L3, but I cant be assed, price+no desire to teach. I will certainly do some privates, but still absorbing stuff from the L2, and general thoughts atm. No probs with advanced Alpine skiers, and other tele, or even boarders, but I ski with pros sometimes, don't know if anything can really help with that, as I am not a pro. Its still fun, just wrecks me.

I believe @Telemark Phat has been developing some new technique ideas this season but only have a hint currently.

Funny how the oldest technique is still under development, yet very cool at the same time. I honestly think that any slider of any kind, that thinks they have mastered all there is to master, is a fool.

Has to be the only reason. Looks cooler plus bragging rights: "I tele." End of conversation. Especially the dudes who do those inside out knee thingy turns. Other than that you got nothin'.

Each season I get a bit deeper into the pit.

But I have found the pit changes direction regularly. This is a separate cartoon of beer and maybe a whiskey conversation.

This year’s improvements were seemly minor to others but now at the backside of the season & thinking of last season I appreciate the changes and expanded ability.

When I’m teleing well I don’t get tired & don’t want to stop. When I’m teleing like rubbish I’m stuffed after 10 turns.

Yep, I did the Alpine 3 this season. I still prefer Tele, then Nordic, then Alpine. But a big caviat, is that since I'm teaching skiing I don't get much time to ski for myself.

This season was so busy, I've only skied 6 hours purley for myself, where I wasn't teaching someone, training another instructor, or training myself. Each of those 6 hours were on Alpine gear because that was what I haired to be on. (I've also done a few days of XC and BC tele). This isn't a problem because I love teaching skiing and being a Nerdy Instructor, I enjoy working towards making my skiing meet some arbitrary benchmarks (I've spent way too much time on my snowplough wedeln).

If it weren't for teaching I wouldn't be Alpine skiing, I find it really limiting compared to Tele, and it's mastery (the process of) much less satisfying than in Tele. All you need to do to be a good Alpine skier is stand on the outside ski and point it where you want to go. There is much less going on.

Alpine is less physically demanding than Tele, that's unavoidable, how much more demanding Tele is is highly influenced by your skiing style though.

When I'm training with the Alpine Demo Team guys my legs will never last as long as theirs, but I reckon I'm having more fun.

This is what I was hoping for. I need some new gear next season, was almost thinking about increasing the quiver to include Alpine, as I found even with poor technique, my legs hardly noticed it at all. But I found it a bit dull. But thought that maybe if I skilled up at it, it could have the same sort of feeling. I know I can continue to improve my skills, but even a few years ago, I could not have hung with some of the people I do now, so pretty happy in that respect.

I keep trying to get them to try tele, like, you guys make that look so easy, maybe its time you challenged yourself? But they say why., its harder. But why ski in the first place?

I do believe its whatever floats your boat, or whatever you need to do to keep sliding, for instance some of the over 70's I know who snowboard, do so because of knee issues. I reckon if it came right down to it, I would sit ski before giving it away, ie I won't stop until Im dead.

    Yes, agree
I’ve been very happy with the Marker
    FT10 as the workhorse/sidecountry binding.
Less so with the Dynafit Speed Radicals because of the potential lack of toe initiated release and also because at heel DIN 5, I get some lateral heel movement and can literally twist out when stopped! Having said that, I never pre-released.
Tecton for the tourers next year.

When you reach exalted status on Alpine, you just stand on top of 'em, no work at all.

Whereas on tele, it's permanent genuflection, almost like penance. There's something in that.;)

    I'll bite.

Tele is dead. You've successfully passed through the "denial" and "anger" stages of grief, and have now reached "bargaining" where there are proposals like "If we make a HALF a tech binding, with just the toepiece, but still have telemark bits in the back, will you please not shut down any more telemark boot production?". But I always admire the passion of historical re-enactors, it's endearing.

Telemark is for people who try skiing and think "Damn, this is so easy and fun! If only there was a way to make it way more difficult, a lot more tiring, and also goofier"

I swapped over to the dark side because alpine had become boring.
Now look back on all those alpine years as a waste of time!
Tele is an exotic and beguiling dance, I can never get enough.
Equipment is evolving and exploding in variety and innovation every year. Light boots will be the next big deal, just have to wait a bit.

I have a few friends who have crossed back to Alpine, and rarely tele anymore. To be brutally honest, I would have to say that while they are strong skiers, (50+ here and more OS every year) they actually have quite poor technique, and attempts to refine, well its like they dont have the attention span or something, they have a bit of a go, but just go back to what they do. On the other hand some are still on tele, with no plans to swap. One guy I know is one of the sweetest practitioners I have seen, he used to swap a fair bit, but now only teles.

2 out of my 3 kids have swapped over too. They get that it’s more fun and feels sweeter.
Oh, and that if you don’t want to lay Tele turns then you just alpine without a fixed heal.
