So the last time the Southern Lakes got good May snow like this was back in 2016...

The frequent intense cold fronts are great (and align with the seasonal guidance), but SST's are still up all around NZ.

It’s all part of the finely balanced conditions we need for snow in our maritime climate though isn’t it Red? It’s the current elevated SSTs in the Tasman that are piling moisture into the cold air that’s getting churned up from the Southern Ocean. It could just as easily been a few degrees warmer and solid rain at all elevations.

FWIW I’m a bit fed up with all the cold and wet now. Some sun would be great.

The fact you've had a stationary high with a train track to the polar belt has helped a bit.
Much like NZ all summer . A massive ridge plonked in a specific place...

I'm actually doing a bit of work on this at the moment. And yes, for snow falls, you are right. But for persistence of snow cover on the ground, warm temperatures are really not what we want all. i.e., it can snow plenty as the fronts come through, but if the temps are too high it's just not going to hang around. A quick look at 16 years of recent data suggests that may snow falls are not a great predictor of the eventual ski season duration.

If cold fronts were supposed to hit WA, the mountains would be over that side!

Lots of "sky is falling, sky is falling" in southern WA, but good to see a decent front again. Sub 992hPa at closest station!! Tomorrow will be blustery. Took a solid one to dislodge that stubborn bastard of a blocking high that has been plaguing the country.

Urgently required rain, 40mm since 1800 tonight already, good start. Yesterday fuel reduction burning in closed eucalypt forest on south aspect, 25 degrees, 35% RH, moderate northerly winds, beautiful clean burn but scarily dry, 300mm of ground level fuel load in some areas, crackling dry all the way through.

So many private burns escaping in last two weeks, local fire ban in force for today with the increasing winds. Parents in a local VBFB, have been on non stop nightly call outs to escaped burns.

Arrived in Myrtleford at the in-laws place. For the last time might I add... No more gazing out at Mt Buffalo from the kitchen window or wandering through the Alpine creeks as they've sold it.

Anyway. Very much feels like early autumn here, warm in the sun with lots of trees in full colour / shedding leaves .

Up the hill tomorrow to Falls .

Anyone care to predict any rainfall in the Mitta Catchment between this Sunday to Wednesday? I'm up there paddling for the week and it normally takes a good 8-10 hours for any stream rises to occur. Our students will no doubt have frozen wetsuits most mornings! Haha

Was the same in these parts. Below zero st home. A bit of frost on the ground and water troughs frozen over. But I note that PV had an inversion and much warmer than here this morn. It’s such a clear still morning as well.

Slightly overcast morning today at falls creek, not overly cold - looks like we had another inversion overnight. Today will be a hiking day if the weather plays ball.

We wandered on up to Mt Mackay, clouds have been rolling in as the day wares on. Breezy up at the summit and it probably was about 6 or 7c with a 0 windchill. Elevation 1,842 for those not in the know....

Another cracking day today up at falls creek. Cloudy morning and now clearing to a sunny arvo. Crisp air in the shade and wind but otherwise lovely. In all my years of coming up at the end of May / beginning of June this is definitely the mildest I can recall...

Oh and this was the last remaining snow we found in the village up by the aqueduct trail...

Antarctica has been a continent of two halves lately - Western half is very cold, Eastern half is warm. I think we'll have another 2 or 3 weeks of anti-cyclonic domination over SE Australia before it breaks down with powerful fronts ripping through.
