We lost a local surf legend today, Col died at Sandon Point this morning around 7:15 am
Haven't been out to have a real good look at the open beaches.
Sounded solid o/night and head down in the Office today.
Spent the weekend 18m down under water 1km out to sea doing open water scuba course.
pretty cool whats actually going on down there when have time to chill and have a look around you not getting bounced and rag dolled along the bottom. !!!
He's got the South coast team uniform on there.
Trackies and a flanno shirt.
RIP, not good!!!
bugger, poor fella
Vooey would have been like an Aussie Jaws Left yesterday
Looks like a good Solander session went down yesterday morning too from the pics?
@SAsurfa The Box would have been good (CC Version) have you had an opportunity to surf it yet?
Might have been too big for Aussie Pipe, probably washing through on the big sets
What happened to that bloke Col at Sandon? Drowned? Heart attack?
@nfip or @W0nkey D0nkey
Going for an early in the morning and hoping for a bit of 2ft+ ENE fun
Reporting in around mid morning
@Ted Harper get out there and enjoy mate should be good fun
I _may_ have had a bonus surf at the Northen Beaches Mystery Location today around lunchtime, and if so I _may_ have scored 28 small but pretty fun waves in a bit over an hour
Drying my 1mm summer vest and neoprene boardies in front of the fireplace tonight so they aren't clammy and yuck for the early tomorrow morning. Water is still warm so no more rubber than that is required yet. Intending to get in the water about 6:45am and surf for an hour or so while my wife is doing the yoga class at Bend in the Road.
Surf check 7am on the CO-NN stretch revealed not much
However, NN was sucking it in and producing some very, very tasty little 2ft+ to almost inconsistent 3ft sets
The lineup as always is very competitive with some extremely talented surfers in the water but I still managed to get a couple of very fun ones
@Ted Harper I'd imagine the 'Joey would be sucking this lovely little swell in nicely? Any nice little 2ft+ wedging lefts up in the corner this morning?
Otherwise I reckon it would be good at The Wedge or Nth Av too
I only checked the Joey from the North Palm Beach car park. Looked to have some ok ones up there but a fair wait between them. I last surfed up there last Sunday (after moving up from North Palm Beach after 1/2 hour of getting smashed in sandy closeouts) and it was good then.
This morning I surfed off about the middle of North PB car park. Some nice walls and little hollow bits particularly near the start of my session but it was slow and inconsistent by the time we finished. I got 17 ok ones (with the first couple being the best of them) in about an hour. Everyone was able to spread out a bit and get plenty of waves.
A couple of guys who were checking it early drove off then came back and paddled out about when I was finishing up at 8am. I didn't get to chat but I can only guess Whale and Av weren't as good or too crowded in order for them to drive a lap and then come back.
Bonus yoga report from my wife: Grass was dewey and the offshore wind was a bit cold but a good class (8 there plus the teacher). No yoga next two weeks as the teacher will be away.
@SAsurfa must be too busy surfing as the SW 8am report was never posted
SW report from Manly this morning - photos look tasty:
This morning at "Ted's Northern Beaches Secret Spot" was like yesterday only not quite as good. Looked like this just before I paddled out (lighthouse hidden to protect the location )
I had half a session on the bank in the photo then it went a bit ordinary with the rising tide so three of us walked up to the second last bank (not the last one right hard up at the headland because it is shady there in winter and a bit cold with the offshore) for the other half of the session. Was all pretty good really, as I said for me not as good as yesterday morning but I still got a big haul of fun waves - plus penguins and dolphins to share the lineup with.
Probably worth a paddle any time today other than right around the high tide I reckon.
Saw a kneeboarder passed at Gunnamatta, not good!!
Yeah I was very disappointed with Sunday morning's session given that there was a forecasted 'pulse' that was meant to come through. Ah well, Saturday morning was nice and easily the best quality session I've had in quite some time.
Yeah read that too.
I'd be happy to check out that way.
I had a short session this morning (at the Northern Beaches Secret Spot of course). Was tiny but very nice conditions. Got 17 waves (all small, all short) in 45 minutes or so before it got too slow and full to continue. Saw some whales too - one the size of a small truck launched itself fully out of the water and generally a god session. One of the ladies at the shop (who is a really good surfer) said afterwards they caught a 16' shark just off the beach on Sunday - must have been after we finished because we didn't see any commotion like that - the penguins and dolphins were fishing though and there were lots of fishermen along the beach so there must have been something around to eat - none of us saw any fish during our session though.
Was wondering if there were any whales about. Haven't seen any this migration season and was wondering if they had decided to to stay south due to the warm conditions.....
Surf at Maroubra (from morning's bike ride)....waist high at best but glassy as.
Was super-glassy and super-clean water today at Palm Beach too, and maybe waist-high (-ish) but the rising tide was too much for it after the first 20 minutes or so I was in the water. Really warm and nice though, my 1mm summer vest and 1mm neoprene Big Boy Pants (smile) is still plenty of rubber; I reckon I am still at least a couple of weeks away from needing to move to the 3/2 steamer.
I hadn't seen any whales this season until today, even though they have apparently been on the move up the coast for the last couple of weeks. Was hoping to today: my dad who is in his 80's came down for a walk and to watch me surf and for lunch afterwards so it was super-cool he got to see one breaching and the others doing general whale stuff.
FYI there is a whale-spotting app (on iOS, but I assume on Android too) from the National Parks called "Wild about Whales" (but it shows up on your phone as Whales NSW). I had installed it last year and largely forgotten about it but the latest update makes it better - the one thing it doesn't have (that say the Dorsal shark app or the official government SharkSmart one does) is show the _time_ of day, rather than just the day an the location, of the sighting so you can work out when a previously spotted whale might be on its way past where you are. It's free anyway, so maybe grab it and try.
Shows lots of sightings but I haven't yet seen a whale when the notification has appeared (and vice versa - I didn't get a notification today when I saw those ones from North Palm Beach - AND before anyone asks my whale identification mojo isn't sufficient to add a sighting myself. I wouldn't know one species of whale from another when I see them from the water, nor really how many there are or even really how far offshore they are. Crowd-sourcing only works well when the crowd has some idea what they are doing and my almost total lack of whale-fu counts me out as anything other than a user of the app).
I was wondering that same thing the other day! June to August for humpys heading North apparently.
Saw some out very wide on Sunday morning.
Was at least two , breaching and having a great ol time heading up the coast.
Down in Wollongong, I'm in a 4/3 but thats only for pre sunrise paddle outs, other then that its a 3/2 or short arm.
In the Long leg / Short arm over the weekend just gone and wasn't cold at all.
The water in Sydney is still stupidly warm for this time of year but I'd expect it to start getting colder now
Just the wind got to me late Saturday morning when it came up NE.
Sunday was the opposite NE early swung Weso later .
We're getting Support (emergency call-out) crew wetties , heavily subssidised. think they going to cost us $50 but they are short arm steamers.
I guess mainly for Summer ops.
Watta you want for $50 true enough but still.
Will see how the rubber is when I get it.
Anyone surfed these ?????
