snow was great on the right aspects at the right time. Friday night was colder than sat (as far as I could tell) and the snow was better in more spots on sat. Up high we found lots of ice/wind affected so we spent a bit of time in the lower bowls around anderson/anton etc. I've lotsa pics (some nice ones too!) and gopro but no time to edit at the moment so I'll put them up later in the week.

for now though, this is pretty neat: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=fd29...8&p=0:0&t=False

Toured to The Twins Friday. It was icy up top and high on south side, but didn't ski down to find what it was like lower. North side nice mellow skiing. On resort Hotham Saturday - got out to Golden Point in the arvo and found some surprisingly nice fresh tracks still to be had out wide past Village Chair. I think it needed to be both south facing and treed or wind protected to be good.

good stuff graeme. How come you didn't ski the south side of the twins? Thought it would have been holding the goods.

We had a couple of nice moonrises on the MR also.

It was a time thing, SB. We we a bit late getting away. and one of the party was pretty much a newbie, on less than ideal gear. Had a few stops for blister protection etc. I wasn't sure how long he was going to take to ski down our up track - not steep but fairly narrow between trees. No problem in fact, but safety first. I think it would have been good lower down once amongst the trees - and that line stay open a fair way down. Icy up top though, the top few turns would have been hairy I think.

Hiked out and across Machinery Spur this morning . Despite the lack of vis the overnight 5cm+ made it worthwhile . Good consistent cover with occasional branches. Given forecast will take a run out from blowhard hut later in week and take photos if it's clear

Had a great time skiing around Feathertop on the weekend too. Unfortunately was sharing a hut site with a prominent bushwalking club...

Said club instructs to fill in holes left in snow from digging out tent vestibules.... but doesn't in practice. Plus more annoying things. Do i send an angry email? Or do I just can them in log books?

That's interesting Inigo. If you saw a kite in the vicinity of the Trig it wouldn't have been us, as we were up the other end although if you saw a kite from the trig it may have been Speirsy cranking around in the distance. We separated in the morning and I spent a couple of hours around Cocks Harbour and he took off for a world tour. The vis crapped out around lunchtime and we headed back to Thredbo.

Wonder who else may have been out?

    This be Spiersy...

Got out for some exercise on the BHP this morning. To Watchbed ck via the road from Windy Cnr and back via the pole line. Snow was damp and soft in places. Stiff cold wind but ambient was about 2*.

Acc to the widget, it was 8.5 km, 1 hr 50 mins moving, moving av. 4.7 kph.

Pic is of Rocky Valley Dam, iced and snowed over, and wall.

Been in the area. Getting soft in places but if you're just making the trip (A to B), the road has been groomed a number of times and should be fine. There's now the Boomerang link between the Sun Valley trails and the Pretty Valley rd if you want some variation.

Did the Heathy Spur loop yesterday.

Vis was mis and I was 2x mis cos there was fresh on a firm base.

Thank heavens for those orange conduit poles cos with the realignment of the trail old memories were worse than useless, they had me cacking myself.

Kept taking compass readings on each long pitch for an emergency exit. Otherwise it would have been backtracking by foot braille.

Note to self: do not leave GPSr at home. (Yes, it had a decent battery charge).

Demounted Rottfeflla Super Telemark bindings from a pair of very old Karhu XCD's today ( 60 mm at the tip).Planning to buy some Madsus Eons ( ie modern Karhu XCD GT..82 at the tip) to mount the bindings on.

The kids are growing and we are ready for Sterling/Baw Baw type day tours and occasional easy ( safe) overnight trips.

In fact going to Sterling on thursday for an overnight with the 11 year old....

    Reckon the SBs are great.

After the edge bevel fix, still think the Guides are poor for our av. conditions here in Mehiko.

To generalise: don't need the float, don't need the weight, esp. don't need the appalling pattern base drag.

    Just my 2 burritos worth.

    good on yer bluff!

i had my first man-to-man day ski trip with mr 7 the other day

after 5 hours on the lifts at baw baw, after we had skiied every run, he wanted to swap the downhills for the skinnys and we ended up having a fun game of cross country tiggy with some crew from the NPA......he slept well that night! Stirling will be the first overnighter, maybe next year up to bluff hut. Amazing what you can acheive with a pocketful of mars bars!

Great to get your sprogs involved. Well done.

Madshus Epochs are old Karhu 10th Mtn.

They climb well but glide like sh*t stuck to a blanket.

Fischer Boundless have been the choice of many in Vic conditions for good reason: balance of grip, glide and turn. Relying on memory as to specs, the new version would be the S-Bound 98.

    http://www.fischersports.com/en/Nordic/Products/Skis/S-Bound

If I could only have one ski for touring and turning, that would be it.

Correction: yep, Epochs and Eons are diff models. The prob is still that old pattern base design. A pox and unnecessary.

Are you saying the Madshus (aka Karhu) base grips to well?

I'm an old ski tourer ,in my day ( 80-90's) the Karhu's waxless base was its strength , the only base that could grip well in Oz conditions.

With apologies to local shops this price is hard to resist :

    http://www.nordicskiersports.com/xc/skis/madshus-eon-mgv-omni.html

    Around $250 delivered

Love the base on my Madshus, they climb really well. However the ski is very soft, wish they had a bit more camber.
