Great vids, thanks for posting Boodwah and Mr T. BC skiing in Greece looks astonishing, while the damage on Stirling, what can you say? If anyone has any idea who was responsible for that, please speak up.
About time some more Aus 2019 photos went in here. Ramshead Range today. Filling in nicely. Wind blown was filling in the tracks before you take the photo! And my new Black Crows with Marker Kingpins. So light, a breeze skinning back to the resort. Pushed them pretty hard in bounds too, didn't come out once
From Australian Backcountry FB, unable to copy the link but this tent with a sleeping bag was blown away at Seamans Hut last night. The owner is asking people to keep an eye out for it!
What a bummer. Must be the season for it - for the first time ever a ski got away from me this morning. It slid maybe 200 m and speared a snow drift. Phew.
The missing tent: It certainly isn't the first to do this. I was leading my club on a queens birthday w/e in the '80s when a dome tent was rolling across below Lake Cootapatamba. It was a strange sight seeing what appeared to be a large moving rock appear in the blizz. We all grabbed it and repegged it back at their campsite - we laughed at the the thought of the door being in a different spot to where the entrance was originally. Btw - the mess inside would have taken a bit to sort out. The next time was on another Queens Birthady w/e blizzard. One of my visitors was pitching their Olympus when next I knew a dark grey shape was blowing away above me. Thankfully we found it next day about 500m away. Goodluck at finding the tent, if it was the dome as pictured, then it won't collapse in a hurry and it could be kms away as it will keep tumbling until the poles pop out or it becomes wrapped around a tree.
The army SAS had a brand new VE24 blown away at Blue Lake in the 80’s when they pitched it with no pegs then went for an arvo play. They were a tad embarrassed asking if anyone had seen it.
Very fortunate overall - could go a km or more in some high areas Not a bad reason to have bright top sheets!
I released from some 7tms no brakes maybe 5 years ago about 300m above the heavenly load on snake gully. As i faffed around with the leash i lost the ski and it headed straight for the lift line at warp speed. It somehow missed about 20 people and slammed into the patrollers hut. Muchos embarrassment!
Yes. Happily both the ski loss and the face plant that preceded it occurred outside the Falls Ck ropes. And I was getting some sweet turns in. Pride goeth ... etc.
Been on the lookout for a new transceiver for a while. Lack of range and prices in NZ are a bit frustrating. Anyway, just got a "new old stock" ortovox s1 for <300 NZD. Pretty happy with that.
Had a great session on the kites today at falls in mint conditions, ended up being four of us enjoying it. Cheers lads
I’ve got worse, try putting inserts in to suit Meidjo & ATKs. It’s done & makes swiss cheese look solid.
If you look real careful like you’ll spot the tidy cornice brow collapse on the far Gills Knobs cornice. Happened this am as a result of the snow loading over night. Not a biggy but a reminder to keep your eyes open.
So this happened to my 22Designs ski leashes whilst skiing on Saturday. Lost the spring clip off the buckle. Bloke at the shop had never seen it before. Anyway am going to try G3 leashes between my Garmont tele boots and 22D Vice bindings instead, as both myself and kid 2 have had multiple instances of these clips coming undone at seemingly random times.
It wasn't through a store as such, via TradeMe here in NZ. Arrived today, good distraction. Solid unit. I like the interface.
Got out to Mt McKay. Good snow conditions but then the cloud socked in. Jaitmathang somewhere in there Falls Ck Summit to the right of the middle
Did you get out on Wednesday? Despite the warm temps, Tuesday nights snow skied really nicely on the BHPs. Out towards Holland's knob.
Did near side-country on Wed. A run off the BHP road on the first slope below the road out of Windy, then some runs on the Tanks spur from the resort and in the old Panorama bowl. Sensational.
I just bought my winters supply of saucison. Theyre good, around $15/each, ship locally from Brisbane. Will keep unrefrigerated until December.
Ship/arrive the next day. There's bigger ones for $18 https://franceathome.com.au/shop/saucisson-200-300g/

Wish i could like the saucisson post more than once. Another solid bc smallgood I can't recommend highly enough (I usually pack for snacking on day trips in bounds) is proper, legitimate kabanos (not that bastardised abomination most people know as cabanossi). Kabanos are thin, medium dry long sausages, quite thin, heavily spiced with pepper and smoked til brown and wrinkly. The trick is to dry them out by leaving them uncovered in the fridge for a few days, then they'll keep for weeks unrefrigerated. They're light as so pack well. Any Polish butcher will have them. Lawson brothers in Sydney or at the Polish Club in Ashfield on a saturday (or if in CBR, the Polo in O'Connor or Polish church in Narrabundah on Saturday mornings). Having said that those proper saucisson would take some beating...
And do we need the nitrates and nitrites? https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/mar/01/bacon-cancer-processed-meats-nitrates-nitrites-sausages
I have managed to score some cheap Salomon S/Lab Shift bindings, best place to get them mounted in Jindbyne?
I did a bit of raid of the shelves at Wilderness Sports today. So we have the weight of a first production Lynx here ex screws and a Meidjo 2.1 again ex screws. 10 grams between them which is pretty close to the accuracy of the scales. So my repeated assertion they weigh essentially the same is confirmed. These are both the small size. The large will be a little heavier in each instance. There were 2 x Large and x Small Meidjo new in the boxes and a box of spares which I checked and they are useful spares, also a couple of brakes and some red line (stiffer springs than in the box) as extras. There were at least 2 pairs of skis with Meidjos as demos. Looked V nice. I did not check the sizes but I'll hope they had a small and a large on offer. Hassle me if you want more on this. I did not check what Lynx were on demo, silly of me, I'll do this next time I drop by. And there were boxes of Lynx on the shelf, not quite 6 so there must be a demo somewhere. Again hassle me if you want more on this.
Headed out this morning about 10am. Skinned up the ridge to the Trig. Frozen as all f..k, decided not worth dropping a west facing run before skinning straight up Tate cause too Frozen as well. Skated around the bowl as high as possible and then skinned up a NE facing drainage line to the summit. This is where I located some goodness! Dropped this line and then cut to an east facing drop to the bottom. Even east facing barely softened today. Skinned back up west facing and then skied back down the Trig ridge which was still as Frozen as all f..k and so too the valley below. Was still a great day and only saw the split boarders on the summit who dropped the only other line on Tate which has some NE face. Also saw one other skier who just happened to be on the same skis!
Yep, snow was as hard as all @#$% today. Stayed inbounds at Charlotte on my race skis..... only thing with grip.
