So we ended up just heading out from Orroral and walking to Cotter Flat and back - only had 6hrs and did it comfortably in 5.5hrs. Good recce run for a big day trip later in the year I think.

Awesome! It’s a beautiful walk that one. Really gives you a sense of how rugged that part of the alps is. We are lucky having it so close to home, assuming you are from Canberra as well.

Hi. With this big snow fall coming you will be able to snow camp at the Old Bon Accord Hut ruins site having hiked up from Harrietville on the Bon Accord Spur. There is no water on that route once you cross Washington Creek
    BUT
with 1 metre of snow predicted to fall you will be able to melt snow to allow for cooking and drinking water at the BA hut ruins site . So a possible itinerary , weather permitting could be to drive up in the dark and camp at the very trail head of the BA spur. The next day start early and slog it up the BA spur track . It is bleeding hard and long. There is a log you must balance on in order to cross the creek and start the slog up the actual spur.
The point where you leave the hut ruins site and climb up to the Razorback is fricking steep and relentless .
    The Horror , The horror....
The good news is that there is a pole line to the top esp. as you leave the treeline .
From there if the weather is looking safe then you can cross the Razorback to Fed. hut. If the weather has crapped itself or you run out of daylight as we did on day one ,then you could snow camp next to the manky Diamantina hut , only 2 kms away from the top of the BA spur route. This is what my friend and I ended up doing at the end of Day one. Then on day two rather than crossing the Razorback on day two in sketchy conditions we went straight back down the way we came!.
So That was the best BA/ Razor Back/ Fed. Hut /Bungalow spur descent route I have never completed in white season ;-P.

Anyone had issues stepping into Tectons with the pins only partially engaging and the lever not clicking up from step in to walk mode so you have to manually pull it up to ski mode?
No ice buildup in the toe piece either.
They skied really well though once in ski mode.

I find it’s 50/50, if I stomp into the heel hard enough I find the lever clicks into ski mode, otherwise I have to manually flick it up.
I thought that that was normal to manually engage like the radicals

For those planning alpine assaults this weekend, unless you’re parking at a blacktop trailhead (and NOT the great alpine road), you might be lucky to make the trail head. I parked in DP about 4pm then went to blizzard for a few, this is on the way home.

The horizontal arms, springs & pivot point are out of alignment.

I don’t know the fix but am really interested if you work out one that does not involve replacing the whole toe piece.

Hmmmm. They're brand new so hope not! They were fine at first but i briefly removed one, then it started mucking up when i screwed it back on. Next trip down I'll be family free so will have time to investigate.

Can the pics be bigger on instawhatever? Or are they only limited to matchbox size?

You know you can post/upload the original full size image here @SAsurfa

PS when was that pic taken?

More from the “dark and brooding” files, in particular the point where mr bluebird gets ass$*&@#% by an incoming low pressure system with cold air and lots of moisture.

What's the right response when a person that you don't know posts on social media a selfie with a smile and says that they are trapped in seamans hut at the moment, due to the bad weather? Tell them to play cards and eat their food?

Not possible to be trapped there, there is a road to CP and it's downhill with the wind on your rear quarter. What more do you want?

Or go the other way the Thredbo, probably more downwind across the swamp. Should take about 30 minutes.

Well that would not be good unless they are having a heart attack or have broken a leg.

This weather has been on the forecast for at least two weeks according to everyone I have sat on a chair or shared a T with over the last two weeks.

So what then are they doing at Seaman's given the forecast if they are not prepared to deal with it by sitting tight for the duration or being able to safely nav out?

If in doubt sit it out.

I saw that post. That bloke is up there playing Everest when he knew the weather was going to be shit. He is probably sitting in there using up the small amount of wood that is actually needed for people who come in cold, wet and in need of warmth. 100% he didn’t pack a tent and was always going to use Seamans as his free Airbnb at 2000m asl.

He could have made it back from the top of Kosciuszko to Thredbo the other day but he chose to go to Seamans. Selfish prick in my opinion...

Just looking at some photos posted in the obs thread taken around Adaminaby and Selwyn and thinking there will be enough snow for a K to K without hiking.......

Other than a lack of fitness and some equipment and time at the moment...... for the bucket list

Not sure if its reported elsewhere but the Alpine way is shut due to a big rock slide near the Khancoban end. Looks like it will take many days to clear.

Any folks been out touring from the kiandra end since the snow on the weekend? 3 mile dam still saying 0cm snow depth, but deep creek looks ok.

Wife wants to solo thredbo to kiandra next week (i.e. 18/8 onwards), and asking me to check up if snow in the northern end is filled in and likely good to ski for another week or more, or if it is still unconsolidated, or likely to fade pretty fast...

    Thanks.
