The KNP website now says that day parking only at The Cascades car park is allowed. NO overnight parking there during the ski season is allowed.

I have skied up, but walked back. Even in August. You cannot pick a date, and expect anything. When it snows, go. IMO our snowpack is somewhere above 1600 now, such as we have one. Very good above 1800 generally. But if you are there on the day, happy times!

Did n't the hut at Happy Jack's burn down?. Predicting snow falls and snow coverage anywhere at any time is not easy ..I am itching to ski !!. I do like to visit the KNP when I can but it is a long way from Melbourne. I still have my KNP annual pass :) .
Here is another question which you can all wind me up over: What is the Barry Way like to drive on in August ? .

I don’t know about Happy’s Hut. My tent will be cosy though.

....and the HJ’s plain is predictable. I’ve calculated a .03426% chance of snow on any trip I do.

Rode the back way from Marysville up to Lake Mountain yesterday. Stopped first to buy some ex-rental XC gear (from @teckel ) for kids for this year’s likely grim en piste season.
Lady Talbot Drive still closed from just after Marysville. Side sorties to Phantom, Taggerty and Keppel Falls, plus what’s left of the Beeches. Up to Boundary track, then Keppel track. The snow line was around 1200m, and I was aiming for the highest point of the Yarra Ranges which is an unnamed 1500m hill north of LM, but the track up to it from Keppel Hut was impossibly overgrown. Next time would do Upper Taggerty and then down the Cascades Trail, a very nice loop.
Anyway, very pretty patches of rainforest, lots of lyrebirds, and a symphony of birds in general.

The Team leader and I have cleared the foot track from Keppel's hut up to The Boundary Hut ruins track which is near where you describe. We have used chainsaws and circular metal blade 2 stroke brush cutters.
Are you talking about the same track or are you using a pre 2009 bushfires era map?
@beefa skiing used that track and skied on it earlier in June this year. It is not overgrown. @beefa skiing helped slash back a fair bit of that track too.

The Team leader has cleared the Upper Taggerty Track from start to finish. @beefa skiing and I skied on it in May :). Work is still under way on the locked Boundary track (1200 M.ASL average elevation) which will provide in the right conditions, XC BC skis on access from Mt. Margaret gap to Keppel's hut and LM's XC ski trails.
    :)

I'm in the market for a new sleeping bag + mat. Would love to take advantage of the EOFY sales. Needs to handle overnight BC trips and fit a 189cm tall dude inside.

Any of the BC gear junkies notice anything good and discounted at the moment ?

Ambled out of Guthega on Thursday across the Illawong suspension bridge and up to 1700 metres below Mt Anton. Rock hopping and gardening till the bridge and very soft snow till about 1650 metres.

While the credit card is still out of the wallet, anyone notice any decent lightweight tents on special at the moment ? Needs to be able to be tied to the front of the MTB and carried in the backpack.

You will need to shop test, biggest issue will be you fitting inside the tent, not the cost fitting inside your budget.

I also have a pair. I reckon weight savings over my CAMP aly pons is minimal, but space savings more significant when squeezing crap into a daypack. Agree with ecowain, would love to see them in aly.

Packing them in a space efficient manner without the points stabbing your shite was the biggest issue i found. Would love too see them come with some sort of moulded case

Found this photo of them nicely wedged inside some ski crampons. This person was clearly expecting some "Aussie" june conditions that day!

I can't see the point in making them in aluminium. They only weigh 250gr (allegedly), so any weight saving would be minimal and you'd obviously lose strength.

I would love a pair, but being currently somewhat underemployed , can't justify them at this price.
