On the slim chance Gladys opens up the border by mid December, any word on canyon country. Would like to camp around Newnes but many of the tracks to canyons around there are closed. Heard of a death recently and I think it was in Pipeline which is technically closed also.

Most canyons and remote northern off track areas are open again. Only really the pipeline set of canyons and kanangra canyons remain closed. Firefly etc and freshwater complex are open, despite being torched.

We camped at newnes with the kids last week. Quite quiet mid week due to everything. The tops above old baldy etc are scorched earth territory.

Haven't sorry @climberman. This one was just sent within the Branch but the ranger that pulled it together also provided it to the Tumut and Jindy visitor centres so may be worth touching base with Blue Mountains VC to see if one exists for that patch.

Little River Gorge in Vic.... not full canyoning, but a great experience - harnesses required.

Little River gorge is nice but we were hoping to catch up with a NSW friend, the one @ecowain met in Glenbrook NP. More of a relaxed trip as she is just over her cancer treatment. Still have 6 or 7 weeks.

Forgot to say thanks to @ecowain. NPWS charging for Newnes yet? I know you have to book. Wondering how many anchor slings will need replacing after the fires. At least access is easier until the scrub grows back.

Carisbrook as a VIC option sounds fun, but more Torquay than Alps :)
No fees as yet, except the $6 booking fee. Main site limited to 180 campers, cricket pitch across the river limited to 60. Cricket pitch was us 4 plus two other vehicles when we were there.

Plenty of anchor slings getting replaced, mostly by folks who know what they are doing, but not all. Tales of second group thru canyons for the day, finding slings 3/4 melted through, and obviously used by the previous party does appear to be challenging darwinism.

I have not seen the report about the latest death but using damaged slings is just asking for trouble. Slings are cheap and many damaged ones are cut out so others don't use them. We normally camp at the last spot before the locked gate where the big boulder.

If it’s the accident I’ve heard of, the unfortunate person slipped and fell. No ropes involved :(

Media reports are always sketchy and I wait for the official one. Media made it sound like it was on rope but what would they know. Was it Pipeline? You guys are closer to the gos than me. Thinking about a plan B for that time and the border bubble still being in place. Looking to see how far we can get into Kosci. All procrastination at the moment anyway.

Working north from CP (below Crummer spur to Spencers). Illawong to Spencers completed by other crew, existing track not part of works program for us, her and parks don't go outside the brief ( suggested some strategically place rocks to sit and enjoy the views - parks boss pointed at a patch of grass). I agree the track isnt well connected/thru flowing for multi day trips.

With Tooma Road closed to who knows when ? What are peoples thoughts on access to Round Mountain, Mt J etc for March / April ? If Tooma is still closed, where is the closest place to park and walk in ?

Barring disaster, Tooma Road will be open well before March/April. Ideally it will be open before Christmas.

This was was basicaly the same route we ended up doing yesterday bar the final section from the creek. No sign of any faint footpad that may have previously existed. . My gal had done the walk previously ( pre fires) and had only scant recollections . Im a bit old fashioned and think that GPS is cheating a bit so as usual had a good look at the topo map before setting off and had a crack at it freestyle. Quite a rough rock strewn area that was easier underfoot pre fires ( vegetation/ leaf litter used to fill in the gaps) but the bush was thicker so roundabouts and swings . Still plenty of ducking and swerving and short burnt bushes with few flat foot placements. An ideal walk imo. The top is unburnt. Best views of Tidbinbilla Range

Couple of pics taken at the pass early today. Snow came in solid for a while after I took these but was back up hiking just at the top of Front Valley by then. I’d guess 10 cms above 2000 ASL based on what I saw at lower elevations and the BOM. Wasn’t going out to the Alpine in the weather. Perisher thread shows how it came in. Should be clearing now though.

Has anyone been on the Snowy Plains FT in the past couple of weeks?

I’m thinking of going down tomorrow. I assume I’ll be parking at Bulls Peaks Creek crossing rather than the park gates. I imagine all the rain has hammered the road. The Forester might not make it this time...

    Thanks in advance!

Todays pics of Mount Currockabilly. Did similar loop that John Evans did up the steep ridge - across the skyline and down a testy steep rocky ridge further North. Some wild terrain indeed. Found the old notes in the cairn- dried them out and sealed in a plastic bag for now.
