Ok snow where we were. But that risk of wind slab on steeps. I’m not the expert but its sitting on ice and nowhere near bonded yet.
Its an interesting snowpack at the moment. I dug a small snow cave with my daughter today. Ice, then sago, then a poorly bonded layer then the wind crust. The sago layer is the most concerning. Some cornice kicking or cuts on test slopes would have been instructive, but I was at the wrong place with the wrong gear (track skis). Staying below 35 degrees is the easy control until the weather warms up again.

Sounds like what I found too.

A fantastic afternoon out. The heart of the GDR. A real alpine experience. Cryotherapy; I feel invigorated

Avi risks were really high today, all sorts of snow layering happening. But if you were careful and are confident in your experience (and a few test skier cuts), deliciousness was to be had

Wow some of these look like classic convex slope avis. Can be a real trap as not an intuitive place for a slide and also can look like the safest, and most fun, route down.

Route down? I've definitely skinned up that valley en route to twin humps...

So many classic convexities into terrain trap gully systems are cracking off right now. Seems like 2 out of 3 of the observed avvy's right now are of that ilk.

@Untele-whippet when are you going to splurge on some lovely lightweight Dynafiddle gear for the lovely Untele-whippette?

Burnt Downs, Blue Mtns, 1100M.
Normal stride verses frankenstride. Weight verses unweight. A small inconvenience for much upside.
Naxo’s, double hinged at the toe so no Frankenstriding but I hear what you’re saying.
At least she’s got AT boots now as she used to tour in Strolz, until they were incinerated.
Voile Vector BCs.

Excellent skis. +0.95 (Mk III) has those but with Dynafit Rotation 10.

Avi of Twin Humps.
Massive sastrugi of Ramshead into LBC.

Ooof, so much for my instincts. You don't ignore hints like that.

That slide could be just as much wind loading or cornice collapse as convexity. We might need a few warm days to stabilise all that grapnel.

5 of these slides that I know of since Monday. And I haven’t left the resort.

I’m afraid I didn’t go bc, but just looked at it from the boundary.

Off piste was very very firm where ever I poked my nose.
Good shots - very snow out there. Even Davies Plain, The Pilot & The Cobberas have good coatings. (;-)

Great pics, looks great fun in the sun.

Out of curiosity, did you get any pics of Bogong and Pinnibar - both would be looking pretty white ATM.
It might be a good year to return to Pinnibar for a cheeky ski?

Stepping in to pins with a proper touring sole makes a big difference - my DIN soled cochises are a right pain getting in to pin bindings as the sole is thin and you need to push down too far for the pins to engage nicely in the sockets. Whereas my Zero Gs snap in beautifully.

You might want to be quick. If you think of Mt. Wills as a similar height then you will be skiing on reasonable cover above 1600m and patchy around 1400m but doable. Bogong has plenty of cover. Pinnibar might lose its goodness if there is no top up soon.

Snow on Tuesday was painfully slow on BHP then Wednesday morning same again but by lunch it was great. Today it was probably at its best. Very cold night. No need for skins with pattern bases. A little bit of an icy crust in places. Northern aspects did better higher up but at 1400 on the northern faces it was getting a bit bare.

I’m seeing a few commercial tour operators advertising trips in Jagungal. In the 2006 KNP plan of management it clearly states that commercial operations aren’t allowed to happen within wilderness areas. See pic.

Does anyone have any insight on how this allowed to happen?

Management plans are fairly flexible compared to legislation and regulations, so I suspect that detail has been simply been removed from later updates to the plan. They usually update plans atleast every couple of years.

Perhaps check the legislation in relation to declared wilderness areas to see if it addresses this issue.
