Yeah we have. We booked a package!
Then you will just have to stay glued to the forums and keep updated on the snow conditions, like the rest of us do :). Makes the work day go a bit quicker.
There will be snow, don't worry about that. How much... Only time will tell

For my daughters sake also I'm hoping the streets of Happo and Hakuba are chokers with snow from the 23/1 on

If you are heading to Minakami, then rather than Hakuba, you can easily get to Yuzawa that night, and do a couple of days at Naeba/Kagura.
yeah have done out that way before which is fun and easy accessible but will be working at tenjin so best get straight there as it turns out. Was getting to keep in the good books by crossing paths with the missus whilst in Japan, but she'll have a month or two to forgive me. I've not been to hakuba so wasn't sure of logistics. thanks as ever for the feedback crew!

That was a friends pic.
@smackies was there.

Its very unusual to have no snow at that time...however it does happen.
There is a perception, sold by travel companies that Japan is Milk and Honey every year. However it relies on weather...and weather is never a constant.

It never ceases to amaze me when people have a genuine feeling of grievance when snow conditions are below average.

It happens people.

Below average is nothing to be that disappointed about in Japan. I've skied in below average seasons and there's still plenty of places to go and get high quality fresh snow on a regular basis. Just because it's not served up to you on a platter in Hakuba on a daily basis doesnt mean it's terrible everywhere in Japan.

I just enjoy skiing. Full stop. Sure, I’d prefer it be thigh deep powder everyday and juts me lapping the lift, but I’ll enjoy hard packed or slush nearly as much.

The thing that irritates me most is excessive crowds, and that’s never been a problem for me in Japan

Happo lifts will start spinning Nov 25 if there is sufficient snow. We have already had snow on resort although its retreated a bit as the last few days have been warmer. There are some good plans for Iwatake`s future and my bet is we will be riding at Goyru around the 20th November this year. Should be a great year! If you can cook and want to do a season let me know :) Happy to try and answer anyone`s questions as I am sure other Hakuba based members are.

Looking for some clarification on the Hakuba lift passes. I've read that is is better to just get your lift pass on the day at whatever resort you visit, as there is no financial discount in buying the "Hakuba Valley" lift pass. And you have to line up to get a day pass even if you have already bought the Valley pass.

But on the Hakuba Valley website it says you have to show your pre-purchased pass to have access to the shuttle bus? Does this mean unless you have already bought the Valley pass you cant use the bus?

Also I read that the Hakuba Valley Pass now uses IC chips, does this mean no lining up if you have already bought the pass?

Huge advantage this year is being able to purchase up to 9 day ticket HV ticket at any resort (longer from agents) and never needing to go near a ticket office again except at Kashi which doesnt have the new gates. You will need the pass to use the HV bus for free or 500Yen if you dont have the pass - resort buses are still free as I understand it. Yep no lining up at the ticket office with a HV pass, just go straight to your favorite lift and off you go. Some great improvements this year.

Thanks Pete, great info! Do you have any links prices of the new HV pass? Just trying to see if it's cost effective to buy in advance

No worries - no financial advantage buying prior as no discounts for that although check with your agents as they may be able to do something. Will see if its Ok to post the info I have that was part of a presentation to the Hakuba International Business Association on Tuesday night.

I was there Christmas Day 2015,
Don’t let the “below average” talk fool you, I had 1 day with 75cm of the best snow ever up Tsugaike and a few epic days at Cortina which is where I was staying.
Sure it wasn’t what I wanted but we had a ball.

As for crowded NYE? You obviously have never skied mount buller or whistler, I never waited for lifts more than 5 min except at Happo one.
The last trip I just skied the northern resorts as the crowds are less.

Love it!! Thats what i thought- i had friends there around 28th December and they had a blast, and the Hakuba Facebook page posted some epic snow shots from the 25th December and it looked so great. We are from AUS so i think we will be blown away by anything really as long as there is some snow to be boarded. We don't get much here.

It's expectations vs reality and whether you're a glass half full or half empty person.
2 different people in the same place at the same time and one will be devastated at the appalling conditions and the other shouting hallelujah.
Factually conditions can be poor, but your attitude makes a big difference in how you relate to those conditions.

It's reality.
I'm not glass half empty.
However sometimes I see the Shit posts on the Hakuba FB page and gag. People perceive it as the unbiased official page... Whereas it's pretty much just marketing.

To be fair, my earlier shot was right down the bottom of Happo after some pretty warm weather if I recall. The top half was still skiable, just not what we all hope for in Japan. Iwatake looking pretty sad in the background.

I've heard that you gag quite a bit.
Let me know which post is bs. I put photos of snow because that is what people want to slide on. Want photo's of dirt then go to a dirt page.

Let's be frank. Dec 2015 was shit in Nagano/Niigata and that whole season was very below average. Also last December sucked too, thankfully the season kicked off from around the second week of jan and didn't stop snowing.

Lol.
You post on a facebook page named "hakuba" yet the page is a marketing arm of your business. It's hardly pragmatic.. Not accurate. It's basically spam. Unfortunately punters actually think it's representative of the hakuba valley as a whole. It's pretty deceitful IMO. Much like the Nozawa page.

Silly response.

People want clarity, facts, if it is dirt say so, easy, fast and beneficial to post knee deep, yes ?

People cant be fooled with the instant technology these days, not like the old days, marketing departments are redundant now, in times gone past we never believed them, now we can make them look silly in an instant.

I didn't say you were. Some people can be though.

For you it would be more like expectations and desires being higher than the reality that was delivered.
A curse for those of us that have had to (figuratively) 'whip out a snorkel' to deal with what was delivered in the past. And also for those that arrive in a low tide week and have heard the tales of unending deep champagne powder where all the tracks are gone by the time you're back at the top.

Snow experience is weather dependent, therefore variable. Disappointment when the expectations are so high and reality so low is only natural.

And for those that are there and having fun in lean times highlighting the best bits is also the most natural thing to happen. I don't think it's a fabrication, just a reflection of the individuals experience - which is positive. In the same way a disappointed ski tourist would be snapping pics of muddy pistes to post lamentations on FB. Their experience is not positive and the photos reflect that.

I'm pretty sure I subscribe to a Hakuba FB page (and a Niseko one too, and Thredbo, Frogs Snowatch, Steve Lee and some soft porn (kidding on the latter unless Mancuso counts as soft porn)...maybe even ski.com.au but I haven't noticed any comment from the latter in ages. Aaaaannnnyyywaaaayyy, I haven't seen anything untoward on the Hakuba page. Keep it rolling

The page is for people that are in Hakuba and I tell them where IMHO is the best place in the valley to slide each morning. I get it right 95% of the time as far as I'm concerned. If I didn't then I would cop a blasting everyday from the people who go to where I recommended. Locals are telling me they use my advice which is a pretty good assurance that I am doing it right. I do like being on the mountain in pretty much any condition (not rain) so what I say generally would reflect a positive attitude. The worst day on the mountain is still better than a day in the office :)

Nothing worse than being in USA or Canada is europe during a shit season and you think... I really should have just gone back to Japan.

At least when it’s shit in Japan you think, well, it’s been good to me in the past and you give it a pass year.

Tbh even in 2015 we hit it on the right days and had some decent fresh to play in
