A quick question - are there any convienence stores in Madarao? A couple of days here and I've seen some gift shops, but they don't seem to have the takeaway meals or toiletries that you get in convenience shops.

There were 2 up until last season. The man who owned the businesses they were associated with died last season. It probably was not unexpected as he was okld and had been unwell for a while. No-one has taken on keeping the convenience stores open. If stuck you can catch the bus down to Iiyama and back at night.

Down the hill a couple of hundred metres from the Madarao Kogen Hotel towards Iiyama on the left?

I have not been in there myself but from what I have been told this only has a limited range rather than the full range one expects in a combini. Pretty sure I cannot pay my bills here either.

Yeah, found that one, but it's a souvenir shop not a convenience store, and has a really limited range.

Skichanger's explanation explains why there is still a Yamazaki shown on google maps & streetview, but isn't there now.

I'll live, I might just end up a little more smelly, and drink a few less strong zero's, than I might have otherwise.

Yep, there are only a couple of racks of noodles, snacks, and a few fridges with drinks etc on the right side when you enter.
The old couple that run it do provide hot water for the noodles if anyone is on a tight budget and needs a cheap feed.

At Madarao today is the first time I've experienced slush on the groomers in Japan. Was very warm, and skiing off piste was a bit like Aus a couple of days after snow.

    Yes.
I've been at Shiga Kogen numerous times, where it's been raining below 1100-1200m at most central Japan resorts, but snowing at the lowest point of Shiga Kogen

Experienced it last season............was raining in Madarao/Myoko and snowing in Shiga.
Have to suss out the wind. We experienced some higher elevations at Shiga exposed to the wind were scoured (at the peak of the storm...very windy) but beautiful a little lower. Once the wind settled down it didn't matter.

Cuppla real fun laps skinning up the top of the hill at Myoko Kanko this arvo.
Knee deep plus freshness , sweet pitch and tree spacing delivered the goodies.

I can now vouch for the wearing if helmets. .Had a hard fall on Sunday smashing the back of my head onto the rather hard packed snow. All i remember is making my way through some slower skiiers, so may have clipped someone, not really sure. Was quite dazed, actually saw stars... Tried skiing sugi yesterday, didnt really do it justice, still a bit shaken i think. Having rest today and making use of my last day tomorrow. Keep wearing helmets..

The first day I ever wore a helmet (after 30 years of not wearing one) I did exactly the same thing. Caught an edge and then did a big flip onto hard piste with the back of my head. Paid for itself there and then!

It was stupid deep today in Niigata
Reckon it was possibly the deepest I've skied too.
Measured ~130cm fresh this morning, then had another 30-40cm during the day.

I assume you're talking about "near the coast"? ;)
Because further inland Niigata didn't have so much.

I've never been in snow that deep. Waist deep at most. In all honesty I would be a bit freaked out due to safety as I'm just a punter.
Can you describe in more detail what skiing in head deep pow is like (I've been trying to get my head around it - or should I say above it)? :p

You're not wrong. It's dangerous. I've riden it like that at Nozawa, Rusutsu and Appi. I was scared and made sure that I maintained my line and momentum and got to the bottom.

I hit a hidden object at one stage and got flipped onto my back.
First breath was a chokeing lungfull .
Few anxious moments clearing the pow from my face and surrounds , on lookers where having a laugh then realised my situation.
An Avalung may have been helpfull but it all happens so quick ....
