It's a long way out, but looks like the first really big cold outbreak for around 8-11th December, might be on the cards!!!!

Still looking good for "epic" snow around these dates IMO.
(called on the 27th November)

Still looking like "epic" around these dates......

And also quite early to call, but possibly something "Biblical" around the 17-20th December!!!!!

In the mean time, looks like some devilish warm weather and rain below 2500m across central Japan and Hokkaido on Friday 3rd.

Freeze level and snow dropping to around 800m I'd say, by midnight in central Japan & Hokkaido.

weird.....or the models haven't got their head around the forecast
ACCESS looks diff again...yet it looked like that 24 hours ago.

If that came off Japan would have epic snow around Honshu...yet Hokkaido would get some rain. At first.

Just like a Typhoon here in Yokohama this morning..... warm, windy and heavy rain. 18 degrees at 7am, and 55mm of rain in the last six hours(28mm in the last two). And it looks like we will cop and absolute bucketing in the next hour!!!

Not far from Fuji in Gotemba, they've had 28mm in the last hour. And at Amagisan on the Izu peninsula, they've had 143mm, including 51mm in the last two hours.

Not much different up here, heavy rain has started falling with gales and temps already up to 12 degrees! Is it really December?!!

Raining at Hakuba and 7-8 degrees.

Almost 13 degrees at Nozawa Onsen overnight, and just under 10 degrees now!!!!

Just like a Typhoon, as I mentioned before!!!!!!

8 degrees and rain when I went to bed last night, past midnight. Warm in Hakuba (the weather stations must be wrong!)

Is this what you would call a Fohn Effect somewhere else - it sounds like a typical Sth Island New Zealand pattern, warm Nor West, Heavy Rain then followed by the freezing cold southerly. But in Japan it would be a freezing cold Northerly?

What do you think?

No, in this case it's not. A Fohn wind is the effect of warming on the downslope of a mountain range, once cold moist air has dropped it's moisture on the windward side.

In this case, it's a vigorous low pressure system(which rotate anti-clockwise in the NH, unlike the clockwise rotation in the SH) dragging warm air from the south, on the eastern side of the low. any Fohn effect would appear AFTER a colder moist northerly.

No, the weather currently encountered is called a "typical-NSW-Alpine-region-event, but-don't-you-buggers-worry-because-at-least-you-get-mega-dumps-and-serious-prolonged-cold-weather" situation

Can't wait to see the cams in a week though!

9pm in Hakuba, coming down at about 2cm per hour. +1C at my house, +2 or so down at the train station (at the last recording, 8pm)

Will this thread soon be replaced by a current season weather thread? That would be semantically amusing.

I ended up getting the iMac Pro 13 inch. I tried installing Parallels and Windows 7, but I have the japanese version of each and I think that is causing some complications with my English iMac. Plus I can't read any of the install instructions nor setup process.
