Yeah, I'd say between one and three a month.

If the centre of the low is further north it can be ok. If it's near Korea or further south, it's usually very bad.

Still a long way out, but in IMO the period around that time is still looking very good.

    23-25th looking v good.
Possible follow up falls on 27th-28th.

In my view, epic snow is headed for central Japan (and Hokkaido), starting on 22nd December, peaking on 23rd-24th, tapering off on the 25th. Another burst may be likely around the 28th-29th.

Also much the same as last year, I don't think they had much snow until the 20th December. And then it didn't seem to stop until Feb 11. We were there from the 14th Jan, but were quite worried in late December and then wondered what all the worry was about!!

This year I'm not worrried at all - we fly out on the 13th!!

The big snows last year started on the 17th December. Cortina Kokusai went from zero base at the bottom to 208cm base by the 22nd December.

I am hoping it is snow - the car park in the foreground is nice and white and the roofs of the cars are a bit harder to see than the bottoms...

Rod White's SkiJapan.com Niseko Report (Mon 12th Dec)

"This morning is looking superb on the mountain after quite an intense 36hrs of snowfall here in NIseko where 30-40cm in the village and 40-50cm of new on the mountain.
"Plenty of deep dry powder up there again today. Early Hounds will be be relishing !

"Snow clearer's are buzzing the village streets keeping them clear for further snow that is forecast today.

"Temps this morning are hovering around minus 5C at village level and minus 10C mid to upper mountain so layers are advised as the breeze is running at 20 -30 k's up there so expect chill factors of 20 or so below.
"15-17 lifts with both Gondolas are due to run today and it shouldn't be long before full access to Annupuri and Higashiyama ( Niseko Village ) is linked from the top courses."

    4 Pm Wrap
"Mind blowing conditions here in Niseko .....The morning program once again held knee to thigh deep dry dust from the top lift access with groomer guys laying down the the perfect corduroy during the wee hours which Ullr then kindly topped with a sporting few inches of silk ....amazing !"

^ That reads more like promo material than a Wx report. Just saying.

Did you get that drizzle yesterday and rain yesterday evening?

I was at 1300m today, for 40cm of very wet mank, and measured -4C, so your are doing well over there at -8 (was that accurate?).

IMO, looking better all the time.
Epic snow now looks like coming in on the 23rd, peaking 24,25,26th, tapering off on the 27th, more snow on the 28,29, 30th.

Sorry wrong chart, was looking at Saturday. Westerly swirling over sea of Japan on Saturday a bit unless it's a rogue model arrow. Looks pretty cold
Models have come into line a lot more today.

Sounds perfect Sandy for the first four days up Yokoteyama then a short respite on the 27 when we travel over to Myoko. Excellent planning

MP - What region of Japan? Generally in Nagano, yes, and they can be undesirably mild with strong solar impact on sunny slopes. In Hokkaido and far north Honshu (Hakkoda), not so much.

Last year in Hakuba was very good - a constant run of Hokkaido-like weather. Early Jan is you best bet for that.
