Looks to be snowing on the Niseko King Mountain Watch cam. Definitely some accumulation top of the hill. I wonder if it will continue and cover all of the ground?

I need one more sunny day and then it can puke and hopefully do so for a month. Thursday looks like it is my sunny one and then maybe something on it's way after the weekend.

Nice and cold in Yokohama this morning, first time below 10 degrees since about April.
9.4 degrees min, clear skies and a fresh northerly breeze....

If it was 6 degrees colder, it would be a classic winter "lake effect" snow scenario.

Notice how the "lake effect" has pushed in to the north of central Japan, and even off northern Japan into the Pacific....

At the moment, the temperatures are too high, and the pick up of moisture from the Sea of Japan is only happening about 200-300km off Niigata Prefecture, so not so much moisture is picked up, and not penetrating inland either.

Contrast this with the winter time push:

You can also see why central Japan gets more snow from these cold winds than Hokkaido.... there is around twice as much distance to pick up moisture, than there is in Hokkaido. This also explains the HUGE snowfall that can happen in central Japan in a very short time.

Another clear day in Yokohama. Fuji visible two days in a row, which indicates that the summer water vapour haze and humidity is dropping right off....

Still only about the top 600-700m has snow on it though.

Just to be clear they are not my photos unfortunately. The photos are by a local photographer mate of mine. Only wish I was there!

Pity about the rain forecast this weekend but as Donza points out plenty more snow forecast next week.

Kinda odd weather in Tokyo/Yokohama today. It's been raining pretty much all day....

But I was in Nerima (suburb of Tokyo) where it's been no higher than 12.5 degrees today (10.2 overnight)

However, in Tokyo, it's gone from an min of 12.1, got to 18.5 degrees at 9am, down to 13.0 degrees at midday, and at 3pm, it was back out to 19.6!!!!! WTF???

In Yokohama, it's been steady between 18 - 20 degrees ALL DAY, and about 40mm rain!!!!

    It's certainly not winter yet!!!!

10 degrees in Hakuba but is about to come into a winter pattern. We should see some low falls from tomorrow evening. You will hear me hoot from here when it starts falling in the valley.

None of the JMA forecasts show anything, but IMO, it will be cold enough for snow to low levels briefly tomorrow in central Japan, and perhaps a fraction longer on Thursday. The Thursday colder air is associated with a low pressure trough moving through the Sea of Japan on Wednesday, which should give Hokkaido reasonable snow on Thursday.

No sign of the classic winter pattern yet.

Absolutely crystal clear in Yokohama this morning.... probably haven't seen the air this clear since maybe last February. The consistent clear winter air is probably only a few weeks away now....

Here's the satellite for this morning:

There's nice cold air heading off the Asian mainland. It must be reasonably cold, because it's picking up moisture from the Sea Of Japan, inside 200km of the asian coast.

However, for central Japan, the direction is all wrong. It's coming too far from the west so any so the penetration around Nagano & Niigata Prefectures will not be far enough inland to produce much snow. Hopefully, this will change later, when it swings more to the north, but IMO, there won't be much snow in this, in central Japan.

Looking on the early morning webcams, looks like Hirafu has done pretty well out of this. The bottom is looking very white.
As Sandy said, wrong direction for significant action on Honshu. Too much westerly.

Cut & Paste from the local daily report "However there has been a marked change in the weather recently with a very strong Siberian system over Niseko now and almost continuous snow forecast right through until November 26th".

Doesn't look like Happo got more than maybe 10cm at that elevation though....

Here what it looks like from the valley:

Looks like a tiny bit has settled on roofs, not much on the ground, and a snowline around the 900-950m mark. Probably about what you coudl expect from yesterday's westerly.

Thursday looks a bit more promising IMO.

Temps are starting to drop here now. Got to a balmy 12 down to around 9 now and starting to spit. 20 - 30cm up high for me on this one.with just a little again in the valley. Hope I'm wrong of course and it pukes. I want to ride.

Mt Fuji was visible again from Yokohama this morning. Looks like a bit of snow fell up there last night. It now has around the top 1500mm covered in snow (last time I saw it a few days back, it was around the top 700-800m)
So I guess that puts the snow line at around 2200-2300m at Mt Fuji.
