I arrive at Yokoteyama (Shiga Kogen on 23 December, I hedged my bets by making the first stop the highest hotel around at 2300 metres. The records show there is not actually a year where there was not snow up there then, looking out the cam at the hotel, looks white already.

ASB, apart from Hokkaido, have you skied any where else in Japan, other than Shiga Kogen?

Shiga is higher, which is good when the temperatures are warm, but the location in the mountains means it gets less snow than some other places.

I had a look at that last night, it's blocked at work though.
Can see the 9 panel gfs at work though.

Looking at that last night though, the 528 line gets pretty low over Honshu next week.

A very light fall of snow at Shiga and Myoko today, the snow guns are running well at Shiga with good cover on man made runs.

It's funny how the way you record things has a definite impact on statistics....

For example, IIRC the BOM records the overnight minimum temperature up to 9am, and the daytime max from after 9am.

In Tokyo the range has been 7.2 - 11.6 degrees, BUT these were recorded at:

    Min 7.2, 11:52am
Max 11.6, 12:03am (just after nidnight)

Had that been measured the way the BOM does, it would have shown more like:
    Min 7.5, 8:00am
    Max 7.6, 10:00am

So overall, the statistics will show a pretty average day for Dec 1st, but the reality is that it will end up being perhaps 8 degrees below average through the middle of the day.

4.2 degrees in Yokohama, and dropping a bit, with a bit of rain about. If it was mid January, it would be snowing today I reckon!!!

I know people are not so fond of the JMA long term forecasts but thought I would post it again to show how it has turned around in a week...
Dec 3-Jan 2 = Average for Honshu (not 60% chance of below ave) and above ave for western Hokkaido (not 40% chance of below).

IMO 10th through 13th looking good for Honshu, hopefully enough to see the opening of entire resorts.

Sandy didn't you pick the 13th about a week back as potentially packing the goods?
well, thar she blows. GFS agrees at the moment.

10-13th looking. Very nice. Next 5 days aren't looking as promising as they were a few days ago IMO (for central Japan)

It's been a bizarre day for weather in Yokohama today. Yesterday we had a low of 4.1 and a top of 7.1

Today, we had a low of 6.7, then it hit the seemingly high temperature of around 14.5 about 3pm, before dropping back to 13.4 at 5pm.

THEN, the wind strengthened out of the SW, and it jumped 5 degrees in an hour before topping out at 20 degrees at 8:15pm!!!! [IMG]

Similar spikes in temps here in Hakuba yesterday. It hit +9.6C at 10pm. Yesterday was windy and wet as well, with pretty steady rain all day to high altitude. Snow line has dropped again this morning, with new snow in the trees visible above about 1800m in the direction of Cortina.

    Crazy weather
Had a freaky fully buckled ride up from Kobe to Chitose yesterday.
Mild in Osaka..30cm of snow on the tarmac at Chitose with the pilot warning we might have to divert.
Drove through a blizzard to Niseko where it had been...wait for it.. raining all day.
The weather changed about half way down.
The curse of the White Whale strikes again
Turned to snow overnight with about 10cm fresh, but its now sleet/snow mix.
Not sure what to expect, but the onsen's nice and the place is deserted..just how I like it.
    Peace, me out.

thanks for that sandy! yes unfortunately rained all yesterday - snowed about 5cm at 6am and then rained all day again - was expecting the freezing level to drop some time mid afternoon but no love. imo i think the niseko snow robot may have had a long night in barunba last night so hopefully he wakes up soon!

Most of the precip seems to be passing just north of Habooba. http://www.jma.go.jp/en/radame/index.html?areaCode=208

Cloudy here with blustery wind. Cloud down to 900m at times, probably snowing lightly up there at times, though I suspect a lot of the cloud is low with filtered sun higher up.

was a great morning up top at hirafu (king hooded triple) - still sassa (sic) poking out but gradually disappearing. conditions down low also good albeit a tad sticky in places. for those interested you can ride top to bottom now although not all sections are open and the new gondola wasnt loaded up however should be more stuff opening up real soon IMO!
