Central Japan looking nice from Friday IMO. Hokkaido off to a good start!
Yeh not super epic IMO, but certainly looking better.
Yeah still too much light blue temps wise and mixing westerly winds for my liking but if it builds a base then fine for this time of year
yeh it just doesnt have enough fetch/optimum direction for my liking. needs more suck from deep in Siberia...however should still drop some good base builder.
Yes. At this stage blower on grass isn't useful unless there is over a meter of it so I'll settle for the heavier variety at this time of year
Freezing level down to sea level on friday night around kagura/Naeba.
Yeh but I don't see huge amounts of snow at this stage...but maps are certainly starting to look better. Wouldnt take much to change it to epic
Is moisture or temp the issue you are seeing at the moment? I'm presuming the placement of pressure isn't sufficient for a long fetch of dry air pulling over the SOJ to get a classic lake effect setup?
Yeh AT THIS STAGE I just dont see a strong enough, sustained fetch for an epic dump. However things are looking better so it wont take much for things to change IMO.
Sandy, thoughts? Been watching these charts for weeks and like Smitty wondering when it will give. So much pontential ALMOST falling into place...
Hmmmm..does that mean I have small writing?
Thar she blows
Deserted fields of 50cm fresh snow today
A blizzardy whiteout at Annupuri, no Gondola at Niseko Village but they were running a few lifts in Hirafu
Just light drifts now..not much for the rest of the week by the looks of things
Winter Wonderland and all that
Peace, me out.
I'm wondering if the whale research facility is all go?
white elephant it is.
for niseko... I will put my neck out and say 150cm to 200cm of snow by this time next week.
1.5-2m of NEW snow in the next 7 days?
Will Ross Taylor score a ton too?
It looks pretty tidy for the ole niseko...
today will be slower....
Honshu should have their turn 8th december onwards
OK i'll make it easier, will NZ score a ton?
Niseko getting 150-200 runs is way more realistic
You still wouldnt ski there.
in a heartbeat I would
am envious of whalerider who is getting 50cent pow right now
stay on topic
Shiga Kogen looks very nice today, not sure what they got but clearly more than forcast, Myoko was strugling to get snow early yesterday but it does look like they got some later in the day. Starting to look like ski resorts.
niseko looks very nice
A few mm of snow settled overnight at 800m in Hakuba. Plenty of natural snow above 1900m, thinning below that.
IMO latest gfs run is a downgrade for central Japan. Model has flipped quite a bit since last night
Youtei looking pretty nice as well.
A very purty pic that!
This evening Niseko Village
Very good whale rider....looks set in for days...tell the kids to buy a snorkel
today was super fun times and smiles for all of those lucky enough to be here already - after holding out and not ducking the ropes above the gs course under ace quad it was open slather for all today - sweet turns under the gondola aswell until it tracked out around lunch time (which still isnt running - opening party on the 10th) - snow was also a bit drier than yesterday. snowing very lightly at the moment we will see what the morning brings
Nice whalerider, wish i was there.
IMO there is something showing on the models for late next week in Central Japan. Very cold, norwesterly flow.
Oh and happy birthday Donza, enjoy ye scotch!
Can't get better than this for early December
06 December 2011 3pm
Awesome conditions up there again this morning with sub temps, knee deep powder from top to bottom, light winds and some sunny blue patches to top the wish list and put huge wide smiles on all our lucky early season guests faces.
The snow eased its intensity later last night and thankfully so did the winds. The blizzard of recent days has certainly worked its magic up there with serious drifting filling up all sorts of holes and gullies. Upper mountain now has around 170cm in base and topped with knee deep silky dust !
In the village we have around 70cm of base and nice cold temps now to keep it there.
10 lifts open around the resort today with the choice paddocks of virgin powder or perfect corduroy to choose from. Now there's a tuff decision !
The cloud cover has moved back in this afternoon and light flurries are starting. Light consistent snow is forecast for most of this week accompanied with very chilly Siberian West North West air. This is the classic Niseko recipe folks so get up there, rip into some silky quick dust and enjoy it.
Caution is still advised when adventuring off the groomed as early season conditions apply.
Enjoy your turns and as always .....
Please Ride Wisely !
Looks to be snow central for Niseko for the foreseeable future....Honshu, not just yet....but it's coming.
I like from Wednesday next week IMO. Should get some rats and mice in between here and then though.
Kutchan has gone up 20cm in snowdepth so far today!
Pffft... And I had non believers
Was always a safe bet with those westerlies
who was non believing?
Bah! Looking at the chart that high just doesn't seem to want to move south enough yet to kick off a Honshu lake effect dump sustained over a few days - yet
I love seeing those various tones of purple and red placed over Russia
It's equally as fascinating watching the relatively stratospheric growth in Hokkaido snow base - what simply amazing weather (Ps/ the northern hemisphere is more than welcome in taking some of the cool and damp from E Aus at the moment...)
BTW, Happy Birthday Donza
Yeah very tidy start this year. Beats last years December in Hokkaido
Hokkiado is looking like the 09 mega that just kept rolling on and on............
I was asking a question, not doubting your prediction.
Too much birthday pizza?
It looks like its getting a tad cool up in Hokkaido, with some places starting to register double negatives.
neg 19 this weekend coming for Niseko
wonder if whale man brought his blubber
What's your opinion on next week's charts for Honshu Donza?
Models are a bit on/off in these parts still. It's looked good a few times and just hasn't hit the sweet spot yet.
overnight in hirafu
I think it lookes really good - for Sandys period...
