I'm sure at least some of you are aware of the possibly tornadic HP supercell that hit the northern suburbs of Sydney on the 21th of january 1991.

THE DAY THE SKY TURNED GREEN:

I'm not sure about the conditions of the day but what i do know it that the storm happend after a southerly change and that there was strong south west wind shear. This storm dropped 7cm size hail and winds estimated at 200km/h+(possible tornado or downburst) and extremely heavy rain ( 38 mm of rain in 6 minutes and over 60mm in half an hour) this storm caused $670 million in damages.

Was playing street cricket. We planned to hit mates pool when the rain hit. Sky turned green and we watched shit get blown around, hail etc. No proper damage at my place so we got the body board out and did some skimboarding on the thin sheet of flowing water across the backyard. Wondered why mum and dad took so long to get home from work that night.

I was accountable for on the ground coordination (two weeks) of Fire and Rescue response up there. Never seen so many trees down. Also, I’ve never seen so many trees “opportunistically” cut down by property owners avoiding council scrutiny. Much firewood was sourced outside of the trench burn disposal.
