I'm seeing some 46C temps forecast for Wednesday for places like Shep, Echuca, and then up into the Mallee.
Potential for some records to fall? Those are verging on Black Saturday temps...it's been ten years, although by the looks of things without those horrendous northerlies.

Yeah, it's actually embarrassing. A couple of 35C days in the middle of Jan is no heatwave!
Meanwhile, Birdsville average high for Jan is 44C and Marble Bar average is 45.3C.

Melbourne and surrounding outer subs fall under "Low-Intensity Heatwave".

I would suggest Melbourne and the coastal-inland fringe benefits from some coastal reprieve day-to-day...
'Extreme Heatwaves' by BoM standards is where you see temps near in the historical records ballpark.
You're also talking about temps that are +10C anoms. Anoms make 'heatwaves' heatwaves as it's perceivably HOT by 'normal' standards:

Quite a wide range of temperatures in Melbourne suburbs, indicating that the moderating southerly is very weak.
Melbourne top so far has been 29.3 and bay-side that appears to be the maximum.
But NE suburbs are up around 39, perhaps just coming off their maximums.

Just short of 40C out at Coldstream, 38.5C at the airport. Avalon only 27.5 now that the breeze turned southerly after hitting 34.5C.
Oly Park though just cracked 30C there CC? Although no doubt it's 45C out on Centre Court!

    Holy heatwave Batman.
Our forecast in the upper Blue Mtns for Tuesday - Friday is
    35, 35, 36, 38!!!!
It's NEVER been forecast 38 here!
I've been here for 33 years and never thought we'd ever need aircon..... got it this year!
I used to have a rule that if it ever got to 30 I'd wear shorts to work.
    Unbelievable!

Well it was glorious down in Apollo Bay and up in the Otways. We didn't get above about 25c and where we were staying on a high perch over looking Apollo Bay seemed to stay around the 21/22 mark, dropping to low teens in the evening. Was glorious and it was so nice to see a lot of green and plentiful vegitation up in the hills. Disappointing drive once over the hills... Back to hot and a-typical Aussie country.

We had some friends with us as we left this morning:

I spy with my little eye a winter-esque system peaking over SW WA on GFS, circa 200 hours. How long will it last?
    EC 'aint looking impressed yet.

Looks to induce some Tropical Depressions in it's wake through the GoC & The NW Shelf, but I think it's wishful thinking yet.

Note the MJO is entering our region over the next week or so but it's really backed off it's intensity over the last week. Trending for a low-key pass this time perhaps.

That's interesting you mention Blocking as the patterns seems more devoid of tropical, Rossby and SOI influence, than blocking.
I mean we have inland Tropical WA weather (heat) impacting SE Aus. To me it seems the ridging we're seeing is dominant but fluid. i.e. It seems to lack any sort of reset and just recycles through NW Aus influences. I can't remember the last time we had a high exceeding 1030hPa over our region, proper.

Geez. Perisher has never hit 30C from memory. I think Thredbo was only in the 27s in the 2009 heatwave too.

Condobolin has four days in a row of 45C+. Surely that has to be unprecedented if it happens. 45, 46, 47, 46 from tomorrow though to Friday. It was also 43C today and yesterday.

Cooma might be an outside chance of 40C as well at some stage over the next four days.

IMO this next MJO round will be wet and tropical like last. I had thought a 4-6 weeks away. But latest MJO maps show a rapid progression and could easily be back over Oz at full strength by late Jan early Feb.

This is a great set of pages buried in BOM - check out the various tab options. solid data

Canberra, when I was growing up here in the 80s/early 90s, it didn't make sense to have a pool like most of the rest of Australia. Summers these days the idea of not having access to a pool is revolting. (luckily the parents can oblige) These 3 days in a row of more than 40 are just the worst. Air conditioning is mandatory here now as well to be able to sleep when it doesn't get below 21 at night. Also mandatory are January trips to cold places like Hokkaido.....

47.2C in Hay and a few other 47s nearby.

SA however is the real hotspot. 48.9C at Port Augusta, 49.0C at Tarcoola and a bunch of other 47+s
