What have the groomies been like early on non rain days?
well poppy has had a blast on snowtubing groomed tracks
47 was better than Happo...colder snow and better groomers ..happo was like a iceblock melting in the sun
47 the other day was like a epic aussie day the day after a snowfall (on groomes)

i went out to the coast yesterday and it was 16 degrees and offshore...while hakuba was 8 degrees and onshore..

looking at the charts we might get a wee bit of snow tonight..the colder air seems to arrive sometime between 4 and 10pm

Holy crap, some serious snow loss from when I looked last.

Since snow depth peaked 10 days ago we have lost 70cm of snow. Of course that followed a 33cm storm, and storm snow settles rapidy. Not all of that 70cm lost was melt, for example, after the last proper storm prior to the warm spell we went from 201cm on the morning of the storm to 188cm in 24 hours with cold weather the whole time.

Might hit the foot onsen near Lawsons a bit later for a couple and see what happens from there. If my mate knocks off work we might try find some rails if the rain stops. Is your ozzy phone working for getting messages?
My Jap phone is roaming on vodafone...so it seems to be getting texts..
seems a wee bit colder outside now than it was at 9am..the rain has a more icey consistency

Maybe it just looks bad because the snow on the concrete in the foreground was so obvious and now it has gone.

From peak depth 10 days ago to now is a net loss of 70cm, so it is going to look bad. Just not all of that is melt. But trust me, it has been melting fast for the last few days. I threw a lot of wood stove ash out over my vegetable garden area and it has really accelerated the melt.

It is no different to last season.

19.2 degrees in Tokyo, 19.8 at Haneda Airport.

Hakuba & Nozawa trending up to 10am, now might be trending down:

Nozawa:
7am 2.8
8am 3.0
9am 4.3
10am 4.4
11am 2.8

Hakuba:
7am 1.8
8am 3.0
9am 4.2
10am 6.3
11am 5.7

The midday reading will give a better picture of the trend. (to see if it is really going down)

Well, so far, my wife and daughter have been up for 7 days:

January 3,4,5: Sunny, about -3 degrees at Naeba/Kagura
February 19,20,21,22: Sunny, about +7 degrees at Hakuba

The MOMENT they leave, I go to Tenjindaira on the 6th January, 40cm+ of powder overnight!!!! (then to Hakuba 7-9th),

Snowing in central Japan now....

NO SUCH WAITING HERE IN NORTHERN HALF OF HOKKAIDO.

AFTER SOME LIGHT RAIN OVERNIGHT, TURNED TO SNOW AT SEA LEVEL (SLEEPING 50M FROM OCEAN) 0630HRS & HASN`T REALLY STOPPED SINCE. CAME DOWN HARD, HAD 20CM BY 1000HRS & PAID 5000YEN TO HAVE OUR OWN SKI AREA FOR THE DAY! AT ONE STAGE THOUGHT I`D DROPPED MY CAMERA BAG OFF CHAIR BECAUSE WHEN I TURNED BACK FROM SHOOTING IT HAD DISSAPPEARED IN WHITE.

HEAVY SNOW ACROSS LOW RANGES, JUST ABOUT OVERWHELMING ROAD CLEARING TEAMS, EVEN THE NISSAN CUBE WAS GETTING IN ON THE POWDER TURNS. IN ASAHIKAWA CITY NOW, STILL COMING DOWN STEADILY EVEN THOUGH JMA OBS ARE NOT SHOWING IT, ROADS CARNAGE, HAD KNEE DEEP NIGHTA AT LOCAL HILL.

EPIC, WINTERS BACK, NINE DAY CHARTS LOOK NOTHING BUT GOLD, TOMORROW WILL BE BOMBING AGAIN. (SORRY FOR CAPITALS, JAPANESE KEYBOARD IS BAST#RD).

9cm here in Hakuba at 800m. Lots of wind so a lot of different snow depths at the same altitude. Probably a lot deeper nearer to 1800m since I'd say most of that rain yesterday morning fell as snow up there.

I don't think you have anything to worry about my friend. Your timing/luck is spot on.

It is +0.6C at 2456m in Hakuba. Almost the same as at valley bottom.

Liquid snow falling today and last night.

Yesterday was yet another example of calm weather up above Tsugaike to 2000m with good dry loose 'powder' skiing on shaded aspects. Plenty of people were getting some of it, and it looked nice! Whilst at the same time Happo was a ragging tornado.

I wonder how often that happens during a regular season at Happo (calm elsewhere, windstorm at Happo).....

fun few days in Noz with 16cm a couple of days ago. Next stop Hakuba! Anyone keen to have a stab at accumulation in the system coming in this week?

Sandy - hard to say. But from my experience, and I am talking the mountain country here, not just the resort area, Tsugaike offers better snow more often with much less wind than Happo when matching altitude for altitude.

Superior snow quality is easy as Tsugaike has a wide area with all sorts of zones to milk and terrain nuances to work, Happo less so. In resort, Tsugaike is a different thing - lame, one of the worst in the land unless ropes are regularly ducked. No more on that as it isn't Wx specific.

Donza - it appears that yourself and FT share a similar center of gravity which I suspect aided you in remaining firmly planted on the Happo ridge during the tornado.
wink.gif

Slim - you may be pleasantly surprised. Looks like the chance for a good snowfall without a follow-up of warm temps.

What do you call Donza and FT laying on their stomach in Happo?

A terrain park.

Patrol probably put a fluro orange fence around you both.

Stay on topic.
