Glad to hear there was lots of snow at the north end too because thats where I'm heading tomorrow hopefully!

Todays conditions almost like a carbon copy of the conditions that killed the 41 year old Japanese skier the end of January.

warm wet snow followed by getting colder forming breakable crust with light snowfall on top and colder temps for a couple of days. This thin layer facets above the warm wet crust and gets buried quickly by lots and lots of snow at rapid accumulation rates.

Where is Skipress? Dying to hear a positive spin on the 11cm Niseko has had this month.... Having said that, my best mate gets there Monday. Timing!

I skied some of the smoothest easy skiing perfect velvet style boot deep powder today. After recent high winds, the follow though snow fell calmly, and then we had a clear cold night or two, particularly past night. Not wanting to get all AK on you, but the relatively heavy snow that fell has dried out and the resulting velvet was very very good. This applies between 1500m and 2200m, best at about 2000m. It may be better or worse at higher or lower elevations, but I can not comment.

Still a lingering avalanche problem with the increasingly faceted snow crystals over the rain crust that has already mentioned in this thread. So much good safe velvet though.

8cm at 800m in Hakuba last night. snow-forecast called for a small snow event. Giving credit: they have done very well this season. Very good timing, and accurate with temperatures and winds higher up (except on happo-hell, which has a wind mania of its own).

The forecast rain for this weekend has backed off a little, but still liquid to over 2000m.

And here is a weather photo for you, captured from a nice moment yesterday afternoon at 4.30pm at 2200m just as the sun disappeared, and as the clouds rolled in after a clear day. The temperature was around -10C and the wind was just starting to whip up a little ground-blizzard with flowing ice particles moving smoothly over the rippled powder, glowing amber at dusk. Really nice weather.

Forested tree line is at 1900m, where the big ones start to fade out, small ones above that, or isolated stands of trees, not forests to speak of.

The typical larger tree higher up is the dake kanba, a stunning golden coloured gnarly looking paper birch that usually does not grow below perhaps 1500m or so, most prolific above 1900m. What saddens me is that if you ski in resort in hakuba, you are almost guaranteed to have never seen the best snow-country tree in Japan. A shame, really.

You can see two stands of them in this picture at 2300m. You an also see a large avalanche that ran last night or this morning some time.

Tree line in Hakuba is often a function of how much snow there is. If you saw the above picture in summer, you would be surprised. It is typically green almost all the way to the top, just most of it gets covered up.

Been a great week this week. Had a couple of good bombing the trees in deep powder followed by a few great backcountry days.

Will be a shame to see it wiped out by mildness and rain but looks like it will be coming back again a few days later.

from the 24th-28th looks particularly good - The yearly end of March dump!

Not dissimilar to this week last year as well, when some local guides died.

Unfortunately a ski guide in Tanegawa died 2 days ago on this wide-spread weak layer.

As it so happens, I'm heading up to Tsugaike this weekend. Rain on early Sat could be worry unless it gets cold earlier.

Thats kinda funny. WTF did you go up there for? (Just teasing) Yesterday was windy enough, so the snow would have been... average where it was safe and windslab where it was better skiing. Today was forecast to blow a gale, so just crappy all round.

For future reference, a higher altitude forecast http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Shirouma-Dake/forecasts/2932

No no, nothing unusual today. It is raining. So pretty much par for the course in Nagano/Niigata the last 5 weeks.... [IMG]

[To be fair: there has been plenty of great snow, but it gets routinely wiped out once a week by rain to high altitude]

Yes. 22cm from yesterday afternoon until this morning at 800m at the snowy end of the valley. Another bunch during the day. Lots of fresh snow around, though a bit slow and grabby, but who cares.

Good timing for fast_limey who just arrived last night.

Yes, weekends have been cruel in middle Honshu. Rain coming once again. It will be the 6th time in 5 weeks that it has rained.

This week should continue to deliver though, particularly in the backcountry above the resorts after tomorrow.

I arrived at Tsugaike(Hakuba/Otari) to rain on friday night. Started snowing there probably around 6am on Saturday. It was wet snow at the bottom to begin with, but good quality up the top. It get much colder about 11am. From then on, it was nuking good powder all day Saturday and Sunday

Deep snow up the top, with about 60cm, (measuring the depth on my ski poles down to the frozen base underneath. )

Good on yer Sandy. This weekend was saved in the end. "Nuking good powder" all day Saturday? I think you get a bit too excited. It was snowing snow, that, by avalanche reporters data, had managed to accumulate 20cm by afternoon above 1600m in Tsugaike.

It had certainly piled up by Sunday, which was great.

So far next Friday's rain is forecast to stay pretty low, with heavy snow the whole time above 1700m or so. Which, again, is good.

Incidentally, in Hakuba at 800m we got back above 200cm on the ground this morning. It would only have taken another 30cm to match the season peak snow depth.

I've had 11 meters of snow fall at my house.

Nice one Donza - see how the Itoigawa direction camera shows less snow than the Omachi side of Hakuba... This is snow from the Philippines, not Siberia.

20cm at my house. It started out lower density, but the snow turned very wet about 10cm ago and all that is missing is some sausages and gravy.

This season has long since passed the last four seasons in terms of total snowfall in Hakuba. After this weekend's storm, I'll re-do the charts.

There is a 'marker tree' way up there that usually remains visible all season on a slope where all other trees are buried. That tree is almost gone. So much snow.
