Time to start the thread. All systems are go [IMG] [IMG]

I get a bit nervous when a season starts with snow but it's done now. Looks like a bit more to come Fri/Sat but a bit warmer Monday before cooling down for another top up in the North.

It's still very early for consistent snow, so the colder weather has been a bonus.

No need to get nervous about the Japanese season in November though!!!!!

It's still mid autumn around Tokyo, with the Japanese Maples still not turning red yet. Probably still a couple of weeks away.

A forecast of only 10 degrees for Tokyo today, but it's still no where near typical winter pattern weather, as it's raining.

No that's the "Coming", the season has started which is why it's called what it is.

Looks like the warm temps around Hokkaido and probably why some of the Niseko cams looked wet this morning. With the NW moving in it should be a good dump. [IMG]

Snow is forecast by JMA on Saturday(Dec 1st) for Niigata city, Nagano City & Kanazawa. This is quite early.

And Tokyo forecast for Sunday 2nd is low 3, max 9.

Wednesday at 730am ....Rod White SkiJapan Snow Reporter

Super Intense blizzarding snowfall yesterday in Niseko around 30--40cm at base lifts.

The high winds have thankfully abated and should allow lifts to operate today which fell victim to the circumstances of yesterday. Needless to say, there awaits some epic deep powder out there craving for individual signatures.

The first week of our season is certainly surprising even local folk here and its still November... The mind boggles...

Snow-Forecast has nearly 30cms for top Nozawa on Saturday, that can easily turn to 80 going by their history . I am cutting Tokyo short and heading up Friday am [IMG]

Winter definitely seems to have come early to central Japan......

Winter like temperatures in Tokyo tomorrow (min 4, max 8), and JMA are forecasting snow for Nagano for tue, wed, thu, fri, sat, next week (although it remains to be seen if that holds...... )

OMG I am in trouble if it snows that much. I don't have any skis yet! The car even after being out today is already half buried.

Drove to Joetsu today. It was snowing most of the way on the way down and all the way, 3 hours later, on the way back. Saw a few bingles and vehicles off the side of the road.

The snow ploughs have already been down our street, twice!

Would be at least 30cm of snow everywhere though it was much deeper in my car space and my footpath, of course!

Looks to me like some serious snow heading in from around 6-10th Dec for central Japan, and Some serious base building in Hokkaido from 4-12th.

Then a warmer spell from 13-16th IMO.

Oh, and I know cold air is coming, because I've been in South Korea the last 3 days, and while thu/fri were lows of -2, highs of +4/5, today the low was -6, high of zero.

The Japanese maples are JUST starting to turn red in Tokyo.
This is a week or two earlier than usual.

The average maximum temperature in Tokyo was 16.3 in November.
This the second lowest in the last 20 years.

In western Niigata Prefecture in Takada (north of Myoko) just near the coast, they've had about 5cm.......

Not a lot, but Takada has an elevation of only 13m !!!!!!!!

In Otari (northern Nagano) , not far from Cortina, they had 50cm in 9 hours yesterday........ Not bad for Dec 1st!!!!!

My brother had snow in Otawara over the weekend, he says it's unusual for him to have snow this time of year.

Sandy - Does the JMA issue seasonal forecasts like the BOM here do? What have they predicted for Japan this winter?

    Ahhhh...... yes they do......

If you checked the seasonal outlook they posted in September/October they said this:

    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .

    .
    .
    .
    .
    .

Now they say this as of early December

I've never liked these charts. For the central Japan snow resort areas, the first one forecast only 2 months back it says 20% chance of below average temperatures, 40% chance of above. Now they say EXACTLY the opposite. But the the worst thing about these charts is they way they have it....

The current chart shows 80% chance of average or below average..... or is that 60% chance of average or above average??

And here is the snow forecast.
    Forecast in September:

    Current forecast:

Which isnt really news to anyone who follows the weather in that part of the world. I would have thought they would have been more accurate and less-prone to flip-flopping the way they do.

For Nozawa and Hakuba , the snowfall depends very much on wind direction

The forecasts for the next week or so on the JMA site a looking more like January than early December!!!!

Hokkaido, Akita & Aomori snow every day in the 7 day forecast period, Dec 6-12

Niigata & Kanazawa, snow Dec 7-12

    Nagano snow 8-11

And snow right down south in Fukuoka (Kyushu)!!!!!

IMO, the best wind for Myoko is a due north. NNW is also ok, but a direct NW wind places the Myoko resorts behind Mt Myoko & Mt Hiuchi.

Nozawa can cop good snow anywhere from NW to due N.

Cortina's best direction is due north.

I was talking to my mate in the village yesterday and he tells me that the weather people have now predicted a severe winter , but initially it was supposed to me mild. Hope they are right .

November in Tokyo was the second coldest in the last 20 years.(about 1 degree below average at 16.3)

The average for Tokyo in December is a bit under 12.5 degrees, but so far it's been 11.1 degrees. At this early of December, the average should be around 14 degrees!!!

Today was a balmy 16.6 degrees, but I'd say that will be the warmest day until the end of March!!! [IMG]
(Well, maybe after the warm spell next week [IMG] )

Niseko will do better in the 2nd half of this system.
