The first cold temperatures of the season have hit.
Even in Yokohama, it's dropped below 8 degrees. The change came through yesterday afternoon, and dropped 5 degrees in 45 min.

Sitting below zero in Sapporo, and below -3 at Kutchan (near Niseko)

Below zero in Hakuba & Nozawa.

Lots of snow at Myoko as well. Started yesterday afternoon. Listened to snow sliding of the roof all night. And this morning I need the gum boots and to dig my car out.

The conditions in Yokohama (& Tokyo) this morning are cold, clear and sunny, fresh northerly breeze, crystal clear views of Mt Fuji from just near my place...... in short, very similar to mid winter conditions where we get northerlies dumping lots of snow on the Japan Alps.
The main difference is the temperature: about 6-7 degrees rather than 0-1 overnight, and 12-13 degrees rather than 4-7 degrees max during the day.

In fact, this weather is closer to the conditions we ofteny get on 13th December, rather than 13th November....... the period just before the quantum temperature drop we get to start winter.

    i.e.
This time in November, we usually get highs of 15-17 and lows of 10-12 (which will happen again early next week). The first half of December, we usually expect highs of 12-14, minimums of 7-10 degrees, just like it is now, which I call late Autumn (it's when the Japanese maples turn red in Tokyo).

However, some time just after mid December, we get a quantum drop, so it's more like highs of 10-12, lows of 3-6. This is the period I call early winter.
The period I call mid winter, extends from around early January until the first week or so in Feb, when we get generally highs of 4-11, lows of 0-3

I think....looking at the charts for next monday , some falls of two feet ish will be experienced along the Gifu..Niigata..Nagano region.
Winds look very west at times, but damn the moisture progs are tasty.

Looks like there's been up to a metre of snow in some resorts around Japan. Maybe not so unusual for Hokkaido, but a definite bonus for central Japan.
Builds a base up high, even though the bottom will likely melt quickly.

There's a site that shows the radar in the Tokyo & Yokohama area:
    http://tokyo-ame.jwa.or.jp/en/

However, the funniest part of this site is the description categories of rainfall:

I particularly like "Slightly strong", "Rather fierce", and "Bitter fierce" ROFL

However, I still think that "Bitter fierce" should be stronger than "Severe"

    Outlook IMO:
    - Rain on Weds 20th, snow after that in Hokkaido. Not cold enough in central Japan.
    - Cold coming in on 27th, very cold on 28th, snow.
    - Possibly cold coming in on the 3rd December

Been snowing all day here in the valley. Interesting spinning cycle that passed us a couple of days ago. It went up to Russia, got some cold air, picked up more moisture from the J sea and now lobbing onto the alps. 40+cm up high.

At this stage, this period still looking good IMO.

If it was a month later, I'd call "snow of biblical proportions" on 29-30th Nov.

Still looking good for that period, IMO.

Also on the my radar, possibly an even better period around the 8th-9th December.

This looks very good for Honshu IMO
Those little sea of Japan lows camped off the coast of Northern Niigata with a ( Norwerster) from Siberia ripping into them are prime for dumpage.
It wouldn't surprise me to see some 100cm plus falls..
    edit looked again
    2x that maybe even more..

yeah mountainwatch is hopeless with forecasting amounts for Japan. I would take those figures with a grain of salt. In fact, I would completely ignore them all together.

Very warm and windy in Tokyo tonight.... warmest it's been for weeks(about 19.3 degrees at 7pm). Air is being pulled in from the south on the eastern edge of the anticlockwise rotating low pressure trough in the Sea of Japan. Even in Niseko, it's around 11-12 degrees.

This is why low pressure troughs are not really welcome in winter..... they provide colder air and snow AFTER the trough, but warmer air before.
Give me zero low pressure troughs, and just a stead northerly wind all winter!!!!!!:D

What I do like is the thickness over the home island
sub 5400 to Kyushu for a fair % of the next 10 days forecast.
    cold air pushing down.

crispy those 850 charts can be deceiving for Japan IMO .
also the wind looks a bit west for Hokkaido on a couple of progs. But yeah its chilly...
You can see how the finger of -12 to -14 850's extends right down the sea of japan to the Korean peninsula (and beyond)
But because of the positioning of the low the wind is a bit west at times.
Westerlies can be a very hit of miss at times
However the sea level winds are forecast at Norwest.
There definitely is some embedded troughy upper lever stuff off the coast of Niigata at this time.
hence IMO why the moisture progs are so high for the coast.

Still warm in Tokyo..... 19 degrees.

And still warm around Niigata, with 12 degrees on the coast, and about 11 degrees at Myoko.

Nagano similar with 8 degrees at Hakuba & Nozawa.

Meanwhile, in Hokkaido, Kutchan comes in around 3-4 degrees, Sapporo 7 degrees.

Hokkaido not getting pumped yet.... I think there will be rain in the mix, the next day or so.

Still too warm. I'll stick with my original estimate of 28th -30th for good snow in central Japan.

    Colder air has moved in
    http://www.jma.go.jp/en/amedas_h/map33.html

-1.2 at Hakuba... (was above freezing at midnight)
noz is below zero..( was 3)
Nagano is just on zero...was 3.2
so basically a three to 4 degree drop
alas the moisture is streaming up from the SW at moment

A fresh breeze still out of the SW in Yokohama. Not all that cold, but not warm either.

And still warm in Nagano & Niigata Prefectures, with that SW wind. (6-8 degrees at the resorts)

Still looks like the colder air will push in tomorrow.
