Looks to me like the bulk of the cloud will not hit the central Japan resorts until this evening, so those people on the slopes may get some relief!!!!

There's a huge high east of Japan directing a deep southerly right across Japan.
    Expect rain in Hokkaido tonight.

After sitting on 8-9 degrees most of Sunday, Yokohama suddenly jumped up to around 13 degrees about 10pm, hit 15.8 degrees around 6am this morning before plummeting 7.5 degrees in just one hour!!!!
Similar story for Tokyo, but two degrees cooler all up.

Meanwhile, Hakuba, Nozawa after + a couple of degrees all night, are now heading up in temperature..... while Sekiyama & Yuzawa had bigger + degrees, but are now heading down!!!!! At least it appears to have stopped raining, and the heavy cloud has cleared....

The models still don't quite converge yet, but both seem to be saying this now:

    1.
Thu Feb 26th: Clear at first (Freeze level 300m), with rain developing late afternoon or evening below 1700m

    2.
Thu Feb 26th: Snow showers clearing (Freeze level 300m)

But one model shows big snow in Friday, while the other show just a little.

Unusually warm and rainy season to date. Even January in Hokkaido was marginal. Anyone remember any others with this 'profile'?

would it be fair to say that the last "good" year snow wise (for what is expected in Japan) was 2011?

    Disagree.
It depends where you are talking about. Central Japan has been well above average for snow, and cold through Dec/Jan. In fact, look at places like Hakuba, and the locals have not seen valley snow depths/banks like it for at least the last 8-9 years.

No 2012 had the most snow for 30 years at Myoko. 4 metres in 3 days. Not sure about everywhere else though.

Happy to observe that totals and depths are consistent with historical precedents, but what I'm curious about is whether these snow falls/events are being punctuated by more frequent and more intense rain/warmth events. That's my casual observation from afar. And I did spend a fortnight in Niseko (my third visit in 4 years) in Jan and all the locals were saying how it was an 'unusual' January, which I think was more about vibe than anything statistical.

    * Please note, my interest in this topic has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with a political argument about climate change so if you're tempted please don't start one .

Any thoughts on Hokkaido. Snow forecast still showing good snow later in the week at Kiroro, but what was forecast for the same time in Niseko seems to have evaporated. Any longer term thoughts? It's warm here in Niseko today, and I see top lifts shut.

Not that warm here today - yesterday was warmer. But there is low cloud. Waiting to here if the top of Sugi was above it.

We've come into a period here where there is cloud pushing off southern China about every 3-5 days, and winding up into a low pressure system over central Japan.

The first came in last Sun/Mon, the next this Thu/Fri, another on Sun/Mon, and probably another on Wed/Thu next week. With each system there should be some rain in central Japan, IMO.

I will do the next prediction soon.

Snowing lightly but continuously in Niseko for nearly 24 hours now. About 10 -15 cms accumulated up top this morning, but it is quite mild down the hill, very sticky snow from mid morning.

I was thinking the same thing in regards to the rain events.
While Central Hokkaido has had a LOT of snow this year it seems to also have had a lot of rain as well.

When we were up in Hokkaido i was surprised to see grass poking through on certain aspects at Sahoro, and only a small amount on the ground around the base area. Everywhere we drove around that area the tall roadside markers were everywhere and there was only about 20cm around the bottom of them.

Yeah, definitely less snow in Cent Hokkaido, but at one stage as we passed through i remember looking at the bottom of Sahoro and thinking it reminded me of Smiggins.

Anyway we still had a ball, ill do a trip report when i get a chance.

A week or so back a guide was saying that this was the best Hakuba season in 20-odd years, certainly at valley level anyway.

Here's how it's looking IMO, in central Japan:

    Central Japan:

Thu Feb 26th: Clear at first (Freeze level 1000m), with rain developing in the afternoon below 2000m, decreasing to 1500m at night
Fri Feb 27th: Snow down to 700m at first, decreasing to 0m by midday, moderate snow overnight.
Sat Feb 28th: Heavy snow down to 0m at first clearing in the afternoon. Freeze level 1000m by midnight
Sun Mar 1st: Clear at first, freeze level 1200m, increasing to 1700m with rain developing by mid afternoon. Heavy rain at night below 1600m
Mon Mar 2nd: Rain below 1300m, getting colder with snow showers developing around midday down to 400m and continuing during the day.
Tue Mar 3rd: Clear with freeze level 400m, increasing to 1000m
Wed Mar 4th: Rain developing below 1800m, becoming heavy by midday. Freeze level 2200m.

    Outlook:
Thu Mar 5th: Rain below 1200m easing, and becoming colder and turning to snow in the afternoon. Freeze level 300m.
Fri Mar 6th: Heavy snow down to 0m
Sat Mar 7th: Heavy snow down to 300m
    Sun Mar 8th: Snow clearing
Mon Mar 9th: Clear. Freeze level 1000m
Tue Mar 10th: Clear. Freeze level 1200m
Wed Mar 11th: Clear. Freeze level 1800m

Hakuba dodging a bullet so far this morning. While other places are above freezing, Hakuba is below (-1.4), but getting warmer.

    Nozawa: +1.5
    Yuzawa: + 6.0
    Sekiyama: +4.9

Strangely Tokamachi (30km NW of Nozawa), at 170m, is -2.5!!

The trough pushing in from the west still looks like pushing the freeze level above 1500m+

We had a light dusting at Myoko overnight that settled on the trees. As I look out my window atm flurries this morning are becoming heavier and beginning to settle on rooves and the roads. Should be heavier up the mountain than where I am.

-3C and windy up at Inawarshiro. Looks like a little overnight but not that much. Snow on the road for quite a while coming from Tochigi.

Luckily, most of the main cloud passed further south. Not a bad result. Should be a bit of snow today before it clears.

Snow has got heavier here. There is now a couple of inches on the car and all the rooves are white.
