Just need to be flexible enough to avoid the rain days (and do something else), but there's plenty of powder days in the mix.

I'm just liking the development if the siberian high belt, along with a decent dip in 300hpa winds.

Snowed all day in Iwate. Powder was a bit heavy confining riders to the steepest runs.

Been stressing about my late Feb early March trip for ages, but charts at the moment look pretty good.

Forecast for the few day prior to arrival at Noz look promising... 50cm around the 27th according to snow-forecast. Still a long way out but fingers crossed

All lifts are open and grooming is top notch, which is what you would expect for that time of year , so what's to stress about ?

Rained in Niseko Hirafu this afternoon. Snowing from about halfway up the hill (dumping at times) but still pretty warm.

    Windy, top lifts were shut.

Guys in the lodge were bummed but I had a great day. Skinned out the cat track from Hanazono out to the east ridge, and didn't see anyone, with the peak shut there were no sidecountry riders. Fresh crud mmmm.

Question is how hard it freezes underneath tonight. Might be dust on crust tomorrow?

    Sunday morning is the day.

Had a great morning! Sunny windless and good for hiking near Niseko. 20cm of heavy fresh skied fine.

Weather starting to come in. Glad I hit the onsen early. An epic or two up on Yotei this arvo possibly.

Went to Tokamachi snow festival today.
It's pretty sad when they have to use snow that looks like this to build things

Thing is, people think just cause we get XXcm of pow that it fixes stuff up.
That last rain event decimated so much consolidated snowpack and then we got however much blower pow which did nothing to restore it at all. On top of that it wasnt even good riding as you were just riding on the ice crust trying not to hit all the hidden nasties.
With the amount of rain we are getting right now I see another backwards step coming right up.

Do we now have to say "The worst season in Japan is better than the best season in Australia*

*(except for Nozawa onsen and much of Honshu in 2016)"

Nothing so far in Niseko. Cool morning but warm afternoon. Many roads are clear to black asphalt.

Was hopeful at Appi at 8 pm last night when it was still slushy snow in the village, but turned soon after to hard rain. This morning it's trying to snow but it's close to drizzle. Lets hope it's snowing mid mountain.

It is still true, I don't recall riding 80cm of blower pow down steep groomed runs in AU.
On piste has actually been pretty sweet this season, off piste lasted about 2 weeks.
1.5m snowpack does not cover the sasa.

A bad season in Japan is still better than a good one in Australia, if you dont care about scratching up your base that is

And blue skies again in niseko. Refuses to "set in". Few cm so far maybe
