Yeah I will just hope for the best. Safest bet would be Mt Norikura, highest resort around here. Today afternoon would be awesome if I was not sick as a dog atm

I meant in Matsumoto Area. Going to Shiga Kogen this weekend, so hoping snow keeps going.

Stil dumping in Matsumoto right now

    Hirafu weather today.

    Yotei-san in all her glory.

On piste is in great condition.
Good quality dry snow up top.
Spring corn halfway down the main lifts (Gondie/Ace), and only heavy slush for the last little bit. That will change this week as it’s very warm and the line of quality will go up higher and higher.

Just hope Naeba has some decent quality cover from Wed to Sat. Not after pow, just some nice groomers for the little ones. Would Kagura be worth a day trip (dragondola will be shut).

    I’d say so!

Forecast top of 3 degrees in Hirafu today but it felt warmer. Skiing in a hoodie for the first time this season. Heavy slush on the bottom third of the mountain. Great quality spring corn in the mid third. Hard pack dry snow up top.

At 17 degrees I’d be doing the first hour or two and then calling it unless you like swimming...

Arrived in hakuba at lunch and surprised at how much the snow has melted around the mountain.

Not complaining as plenty of snow to do our thing. It was a good day, classic spring snow.

I have never been at this time of year, this is just a bonus 3 days after our main trip at Christmas/new year so knew what to expect.

But The snow on the lower half has been smashed. Actually surprised.

I am no expert on japan and records but seems to be an extremely quick melt

Sandy wondered if you could shed some light on it? ....is this unusual or are records kept?

Once it starts to warm up it goes quickly. Considering how much snow there is it is a bit of a shock that it all goes in most places and there is nothing left in the middle of summer

There really are 2 seasons - white and green.

Not surprising, given the rain we've had. We got low pressure troughs coming through at 4-5 day intervals from late February, bringing rain, and it's continued. It's really rain that's the killer.
March temperatures are also well above average. And likely to get smashed Wed/Thu next week, with mid 20s temperatures in Tokyo.

There's sometimes some powder in April, but not looking like it this year.

Spring time temps across Honshu this whole week, quiet warm.
Potential snow system developing from the 5th of April, but who knows these days haha

Spring time temperatures for the most part hit about 3 weeks ago.
I feel like I've been cheated of good snow for all of March!!! And yes, April 6-7th looks good on the long range. I'm thinking about heading to Okutadami Maruyama at that time if it looks good. It's famous for its closure early January, and opening after the 3rd week in March, due to excessive snow. The March opening usually starts at >500cm, so the end of Feb probably tops out >6m.

If I go, I will do a report.

    Me too!!!

And it’s usually great in Niseko in March. Deadset switch flick on the 1st of March. I won’t be around to gamble on April. Heading out this morning for what is likely to be my last slide of the 17/18 season. A forecast 12 degrees!

Here's a Google Translate (!) version of the Japanese Met Agency's records for Hakuba. They go back forty years. Wait four days and it looks certain that 2018 will pop up in the tenth row as highest average monthly temp for March. The current record holder for warm, 2016, was also the driest. There was tons of rain in the first week of March this time, so the melt will be faster.

By pressing the 1, 2, 3, 4, .... numbers above the table, you can see data for other months.

    https://translate.google.com/transl...o=48&block_no=0396&year=&month=3&day=&view=h0

Just flicking through the weather statistics and this March seems to have been the lowest snowfall for the last 6 seasons, across Honshu and Hokkaido.

It looks like this March will be the warmest daytime av max temperature on record, for Tokyo.

    18.8 degrees in Hakuba today.
    17 in Nozowa
    19.2 in Sekiyama (Near Myoko)
    9 in Kutchan
    12.3 in Sapporo
24.2 in Tokyo. Even if it's only 16 degrees the next two days in Tokyo, it will be the warmest March on record.

It's all about changing your aim. March was mostly warm and sunny, interspersed with significant rain events, where there was snow forecast after, it never arrived or snowed a few cm at most. Instead of hunting for pow, hunt for big mountains and corn/slush riding. Skied Fuji, Hotaka and all (most) of the big mountains around hakuba in the last month and had a swell time doing it. March was ace.

However, March is not normally like it was this year. It's not normally this warm and sunny, plus there was a lot more rain than usual.
    e.g.Tokyo
Mean max temperature for March was the highest on record (16.9 degrees, 0.4 degrees higher than the next highest). It was 3-4 degrees above average.
Rainfall in Tokyo was the 2nd highest on record 220mm, and only 1.2mm from beating the all time record.

It’s been a lot warmer than average year since late Feb. For example, average daily mean temperature of March of the city where we have a farm is 7.0 degrees, but March 2018's average daily mean temperature was 9.8 degrees. Nearly 3 degrees higher. This April is even warmer. For example, yesterday's daily high was 21.5 degrees and it is 20.5 degrees now as of 10am today. Average daily high on April 4th is 14.0 degrees here.

It's quite strange since last November. November to mid January was a lot colder than average. Our city was the coldest in the last 40 years and it killed some of our young citrus trees. But since late Feb, it's been the warmest late Feb - early April.

Noticed it got over 25 degrees in Joetsu yesterday. About the same temp as Sydney.

Once the winter northerlies disappear, the temperatures can be the same both sides of the mountains, on the coast.

That sums up in one post why SJ reporting (and most snow reports in Japan) are so effing hopeless.

    Well I’m out.
On my way to the airport.
Tokyo decided to get my body prepared for life back in Oz and hit us with 26 degrees and humid for our last day.
Not quite sure how I’m going to survive the heat. Below zero is so much nicer!

I think this has been discussed before, the observable snow points are different from each individual reporter for SJ and because the locations of the snow reporting varies.
Would be confusing for the average punter that's for sure

I still use SJ every season, even though I know their reporting isn't the greatest, as I don't know of another better or even comparable alternative?

Oddly i haven't looked much at SJ in 4 to 6 years now.
I just use the JMA weather stations and for hakuba - Damiens site.

The bases in resort have held up much better than that in Hirafu, so fresh snow will mean fabulous in-resort skiing.

But the damage off piste in the form of glide cracks and full depth wet avalanches popping off here and there thanks to a month long warm spell means itll be a joy pretty much restricted to inbounds. Anyone stepping out up North really needs to have their wits about them!!

Rain beforehand won't do it any favours either. Kagura and Shiga will probably be okay.

Freeze level looks to be about 700m at Niseko, rain Sat morning and later Sunday. Perhaps a few cm of snow between. So not great.

Many of the link resorts at Shiga Kogen are closed now(e.g. Yakebitai), so it's not worth it. I was there two week ago, and dirt was already poking through.

Kagura looks ok, but there will be a bus involved....

    LOL Awesome spring....

Mid March the locals had already called it ‘over’. I’m glad that spring break was good for all the families that came in. They all seemed very happy with the freeze thaw spring conditions and bluebird (almost tee shirt) days. The big winter base carried us through without any brown patches appearing on piste. Even at the bottom.

To be honest if it was still pumping out a powder day or two a week like normal I would’ve found it hard to go home. But the big warm had me ready to go.

Yeah it snowed at Madarao and I assume Mt Myoko. Person I was communicating with was at Madarao and after this season best not to assume stuff about where it has and has not snowed
