Bring on the 16th onwards for snowfall Sorry to all of you there now... i have notoriously bad snow ju ju on international trips
First, I abandoned Hakuba the day to was going to rain at night (pre-planned), then going on a business trip (that takes out 2 weekends skiing), but avoids 2-3 potential warm periods.
Just wondering if anyone has any informed opinions on which resorts may do well in the Myoko / Nozawa area from the snow on Thursday/Friday this week? Our last day skiing on Friday, and probably the only day this week with cold fresh snow conditions, so want to make the most of it!
Groomers, side country or back country? Only ask cause it makes a big difference ie, Seki & Kanko are chalk and cheese depending on if you only ride groomers etc.
There’s an issue freeze level on Thursday, maybe 1500-1800m, so rain until later arvo. After that it gets colder on a light northerly. Thursday, go high (Shiga Kogen), Friday nearer the coast because lighter winds mean less inland penetration: Seki, Arai or maybe Madarao. Perhaps Nozawa.
Thanks. Re: Stiffler - looking for ungroomed areas and trees near the pistes (probably not proper sidecountry as I'll be alone) for a bit of powder before we leave. My girlfriend will probably stick to the groomers.
Arai could work, certainly has off piste options with a few groomers, and as Sandy said more chance of getting a decent amount of fresh on Thursday night. Only a suggestion of course.
If its not too much trouble can you PM me or advise how Asihadake is ? Im in Furano from Tuesday and we are going to drive to Asihadake and have a day too. More than likely with a guide as heard best you have one.. Enjoy
@Sandy, what changed last week in respect to the predicted “biblical” snow fall. I thought your prediction was excellent and accurate, just glad the amount of snow didn’t hit the “biblical” end of the scale. Mind you, skiing 30+ cm of powder on groomed runs at Shigakogen was pretty awesome...
That So was 14 days out, and that's always subject to change. Generally, I put 8 to 14 days under "outlook"
Hakuba special coming up this saturday night. (and Gifu, Fukui etc) Little tight core low develops near Hiroshima and sweeps up the coast. Interracts with a decaying low to the east of Tokyo (which may cause transit chaos)
I'd say this is a developing low from a weak upper level trough The wandering lows are born down near taiwan .. Not good Their hearts are warm
Snowing at Akakura 6.08.I predicted 6.00 pm but pretty close.Only light but will get heavier.Bets on tonight's total.
JMA ain't that confident.. Their high res forecast has the heaviest snow now until 9pm. Then just light falls *though you may get some localised heavier falls
I will be in Shiga Kogan all next week ,in terms for a for a layman , hows it looking ? Windy is showing snow each day up til Tuesday. Busing from Narita on Monday morning. Thanks
Cheers. We will be in Hakuba the following week, any thoughts on that week? Why lucky its Monday morning? Ta
looks wet for the week after the next on GFS. Lots of precipitation off East China/Taiwan developing into rainfall lows over Japan unfortunately. But the Teleconnections are against this idea in general, I'd need to look deeper though.
Do you feel this is the same for Furano area as well that week with rain or snow ? Has the forecast changed from your last few weeks of February prediction of looking good for snow ?
praying they stay at odds... last few international trips the bad January last year of Utah, Aspen and Tahoe, August 2015 NZ literally no fresh snow at all .. come on bad snow ju ju turn it on for once please !
Meanwhile, here in Stockholm, Sweden, there's been about 40cm of snow... the whole place is white, instead of the usual cold grey. -15 yesterday morning, -6 by evening, and a balmy +1 degree late this arvo!!
I don't think Hokkaido will be as impacted with this rainfall. With ridging to the East of Japan, the outlook on EPS also doesn't look too good. But I think we need to look at the deeper pattern here. There is a lot of -EAMT here, which isn't high in many people I know's radar, but would affect Japan negatively.
Childhood friend resides in that part of the world and seems they've had some fairly steady falls over recent weeks, they're over it! I'm back looking at an overcast Sydney, good luck to all for those with trips still to come
Very nice re-set for Myoko with a very decent snowfall in the last 18hrs, awaiting “official” figures but should easily be 30cm+ it hasn’t stopped snowing all morning and is still coming down very consistently at the moment. Some very nice knee deep in places, mainly lee aspects, the crust underneath is slowly dissapering.
25 cm at Nozawa as of midday today. I reckon it would be up to 35cm by now. Killer day. Conditions improved as the day wore on.
Thanks Stiffler and Sandy for the Arai suggestion. They reported 27cm fresh up top first thing this morning but I think it must have been somewhat more by the time we got up there at 9.45 ish. Felt more like 40cm - the underlying crud was only evident in some areas already tracked out. Snowed moderately to heavily all day, perhaps more intense in the afternoon. Car had a good level 25cm on it at 4pm (base level @ 320m) So I would estimate a good 50-60cm in total at the top as of 4pm today since yesterday evening. The snow was better quality in the upper half of the resort, since the wet base was quite noticeable in the lower areas. Skied quite heavy. Great day overall, such a change from the ice and crud of the last week!!
Was raining last night in Yuzawa when we went out for dinner. It swapped over to snow shortly after and settled in nicely all night. Guessing 10cm in town by morning and with the ice from previous days Kagura seemed the only place to go. They closed the Tashiro and top area due to winds and while initially I was peeved a couple of runs on the highest open romance double (#1) had me thankful I wasn't being blasted on the hoodless quad to the top. Easily 20cms at opening and it was chucking it down hard. Didn't stop all day, not even pause once. Maybe another 20cms during the day? My tracks in from the morning were gone by the afternoon and last runs I was finally getting enough float to lift me away from the previous days crust.
