Seems to snowing nicely at Kutchan at the moment. North West wind, minus 6 and 5 cm accumulation in the last hour according to JMA. Hopefully the goodness will spread further south soon.

I am guessing some of the higher resorts on Honshu could do OK this weekend

Signs of that lake effect streaming off the mainland of Korea/China. Still messy over the major central Honshu resorts. Hokkaido looks minty.

The Razormetre is up and running for the season. I'm a fan of snow forecast.com. Not for the actual projected amounts but just for a general idea within the broad categories (Light, Mod, Heavy), then I look out the window. Also big thanks as ever to the weather gurus who post here for in depth detail. Quick update. We lost about 30 cm during Tuesday's heat and rain (11 degrees in Furano on Tuesday!), but we are back on big time with accumulation at our place at 200M ASL just outside Furano over the last 36 hours and lots lots more predicted for the next week. Furano Zone top to bottom with the very top now open. Reporting 96 cm depth at the top. Went from about that to the 50's after Tuesday's event but back to the mid 90's as of this morning and still snowing heavily. .

That's why I like it. It's good for helping decide which direction you're heading in for the day.

Sukayu's snowdepth has grown by 50cm in the last 48 hours and the current snowdepth is 70cm. Sukayu's average snowdepth on December 8th is 68cm, so it's almost average now. Sukayu's average snowdepth on December 31st is 161cm, and it grows up to 355cm on March 10th. It's just average, and Sukayu had 570cm snowdepth several years ago.

Kamui was supposed to be open today but apparently there is insufficient snow....they must be getting some now

According to JMA, the snowdepth of Hijiori, Yamagata Prefecture was 0cm last night, but it's 48cm now. So nearly 50cm within a half day!. JMA's weather station in Hijiori is only at 330m above sea level. The border of Akita Pref and Yamagata Pref is the snowiest region of Japan, but all roads to mountains nearby are closed during winter due to too much snow, so the mountains are not accessible during winter.

Snow-forecast is way better for Hokkaido for snow (light/moderate/heavy), but totally useless for central Honshu IMO.

Winds are still pretty westerly and raking the coastline of central Honshu. Hakuba might cop some blow-over if anything penetrates inland enough.

It was finally feeling a little like early winter in Yokohama & Tokyo today. The late autumn switch has been flicked, and the early winter switch is maybe a couple of weeks away.

    97cm at 8pm. +30cm in the last 12 hours.

The snowdepth in Hijiori is 65cm at 8pm today. It was 0cm at 8pm yesterday. So + 65cm in the last 24 hours.

And now + 100cm as of 6am. 36 hours ago, the snowdepth of Hijiori was 0cm, now 100cm. The snowdepth of Sukayu was 20cm, and 107cm now, so + 87cm in 36 hours. It's been quite snowy in northern Tohoku since Friday night and it's likely to keep snowing today too.

They are in Tohoku area. Tohoku consists of 6 prefectures. Tohoku is somewhere between Nagano Prefecture = Hakuba, Nozawa Onsen, etc and Hokkaido Prefecture = Niseko, Furano, etc. Hijiori, the village that has had 100cm snow in the last 36 hours is in the border of Yamagata Prefecture and Akita Prefecture. Sukayu, which has had 87cm snowfall in the last 36 hours is in Aomori Prefecture.

This picture was taken in front of Hijiori Post Office about an hour ago. As I wrote above, there wasn't snow there at all = the snowdepth in Hijiori was 0cm at Friday night and it has this amount of snow = more than 100cm within 36 hoursLOL

But the big dumping early winter switch flick is still not here.... but it's nice that the final autumn period is here, because, while Tohoku and Hokkaido are pumping, central Japan is not there yet.
For example, JMA are forecasting lows in Tokyo of 4-6 degrees for the next week, and highs of 10-15.
Early winter is closer to lows of 2-5 and highs of 8-12. (Mid winter lows of 0-3, highs of 4-10)

Hokkaido has been doing well since Friday. The snow-forecast.com computer actually predicted the amounts fairly well. On Friday morning it was predicting that Niseko at 256m would receive 19cm on Friday, 14cm on Saturday and 17 cm on Sunday. The actual snowfalls (according to the 360 Degrees site just down the road a bit at Higashiyama at 200m) were 16cm on Friday, 22cm on Saturday and 21cm on Sunday.

Maybe someone bought it some new processor boards for Christmas.

JMA has a weather station in Kutchan = Niseko region at 170m above sea level. The average snowdepth at the weather station on December 10th is 39cm. The snowdepth there is 75cm this morning, so now it's better than average year. It's the snowdepth at the weather station and the weather station is in the downtown, and of course the snowdepth is a lot bigger on ski slopes.

This not the best indication of a better than average year. What falls as 75cm of powder today, may be 35cm of packed snow tomorrow if the sun comes out.

I can't see an imminent obvious starting mega-dump for Honshu in the outlook
