Ive been going to Niseko for last 7 years and have booked Furano for Feb 12 - 26 trying to mix it up a little with some different runs. Appears that Furano does not get the same sort of weather systems as Niseko and when Niseko gets a dump this is not the same for Furano. Any one been to Furano and can confirm why this is the case ? assume distance ? Just hoping the area still gets significant regular dumps - top ups in line with Niseko snow as last few days trend shows Furano does not get the same weather.

Furano apparently gets an average of 9m each winter. Niseko apparently gets an average of 14m. The extra distance of Furano from the coast is probably the reason. You are likely to get great skiing at Furano in February. 9m is still an awful lot of snow. On my somewhat limited trips to Furano my impression has been that its a bit less crowded than Niseko and that you get a bit more sun. Great food in the old township too.

Furano is more inland Hokkaido. It relies on different weather systems to deliver its 'dump' of snow - i.e less of the lake effect. It is generally lighter and drier than the more coastal counterpart of Niseko. Oh, and colder so the snow generally stays in good condition.

    This looks ok

Unfortunately its going to be wet along the whole home island later this week. Into Hokkaido as well -Niseko may see rain...But (Furano can do very well from these systems as the air will be colder, the low will will have an ideal trajectory for that part of Hokkaido)

Had the road outside Chalet Madarao cleared twice in under 24 hours. A good sign.

Also some tracks down the mountain today.

It's worth a download IMHO, if for no other reason than to get you excited for Japow. It's of someone skiing down some very fresh snow. Still a bit of grass poking through (admittedly, not much). I am currently very jealous of that skier.

It was very cold this morning here in Kanto region as well. Kanto region = where there are Tokyo and 6 other prefectures. The weather station at our farm in Ibaraki prefecture showed -1C this early morning and it was almost as cold as mid January. This local weather news say it might snow around Tokyo tomorrow night, where it doesn't usually snow in early December.

It was probably around -8 around Matsumoto last night. Went to Kagura yesterday. Morning was awesome, cold, knee deep powder in places. Snow was heavy but whatever. We thought there would be few people on monday morning, yeah right, it was packed.

Ah, you also live & work in Japan?. I mean, early December is not the time to fly to Japan for skiing. If you are here in Japan now, I assume you live in Japan, am I right:whistle:?. And yes, it's been cold since a few days ago and this morning as well!

Yeah we live near Matsumoto, I am a software/ml engineer working remotely for a company in Tokyo(but I travel there every month for a few days). Love the nature here. Running, climbing, hiking in summer, skiing in winter. Few people know but there a ton of Iceclimbing here too, but I am having problem finding partners to do it with. If this cold continues and still no snow I think I can climb ice at Yatsugatake before skiing at Hakuba :o

When we saw how many people were there already at the parking (we were there 20mins before lift open, after driving 3 hours) we just grabbed skis and ran to the gondola. Forgot the phone inside the car lol.

Definitely not the same as Niseko. Niseko snow is heavier
Furano has true "Blower" pow, it's even better inland at higher elevation at Asahidake etc
Its just further from the coast as others have said. Southwest does get more, but Central is just better IMO
If you are in Furano, a trip to Kamui Links will be well worth it, and Asahidake if you have a guide

(I've never plowed into a bank of fresh snow waist high and felt so little resistance as at Asahidake)

    In the short term.
Little lows like this in the sea of Japan can dump on places like Hakuba
    wound up westerly snow

This is why you never discount what can happen in Japan, even if there's nothing on the charts.

Currently raining in Yokohama, temperature has dropped one degree in the last hour to 5.4C to 5pm.

I reckon chances of snow tonight, about 50%

I was originally thinking of leaving my skis at home and just taking boots and hiring some powdery skis.

Am now thinking that my K2’s might be okay to take if there isn’t metres of snow on the ground in Hakuba first 2 weeks of January.

    Is that wrong?

3.8 degrees and raining in Yokohama and 3.4 degrees in Tokyo. Another 1 to 1.5 degrees lower and it would/could be snowing.

I went with a local who knows the area so I can't help on commercial guides sorry. Kamui also has BC which I recommend a guide but also plenty of inbounds to ski/ride. PM me for more info, this is about the weather :)

Not quite cold enough to snow around Tokyo, but it looks like it's snowed without settling in the outer reaches of the Kanto plain.Typical pre/early season pattern.

Not too much warm air from the south was pulled in, and Hokkaido largely unaffected.
Central Japan + degrees at base elevation (~500-700m), but not too bad.
