Coming down steadily in the upper Wadano (Sakka) area of Hakuba (~800m?). Occasionally getting heavier with a few big fat flakes then easing up a bit

About to kit up and see how the back holds up. Cams higher up show ok viz so hopefully that remains for the pm. D56B3C14-2451-440F-A56C-AB917E913B07.jpeg F3C87F54-A826-404F-9849-ADF01428981A.jpeg D56B3C14-2451-440F-A56C-AB917E913B07.jpeg F3C87F54-A826-404F-9849-ADF01428981A.jpeg

Looks like the wettest day next week is likely to be Saturday.
However, the GFS looks strange for 06z Sat Feb 08, for 00z and 18z Wed 12th.
The high to the west is totally unbelievable IMO...... 1050hPa and TIGHT isobars? I don't think I've ever seen a high like that!!!

That calls into question the whole model for those few days

For those less educated, could you explain the consequence of high that's coming from China?

Etanbetsu, a weather station that JMA has in Hokkaido only at 140m asl was -36 degree C this morning and it was the coldest record of JMA's weather stations since 2001:eek:

Madarao today was thigh deep in places. Not exactly light powder but who cares my first real deep day this season(My skinny Bent Chetlers felt inadequate in the morning) It kept snowing and probably added another 10-15cm during day. It was pretty busy though and road conditions going in were not for faint of heart

The final long range snow blog from me this season (I know, it’s not done yet, but it’s getting there).

A glimmer of hope for the 3rd (and maybe 4th) weeks of February, before a decline in March.

For those who remember my seasonal outlook for a good winter, it obviously didn’t go so well. The weak Siberian High and the persistent +AO, as well as the early atmospheric +IOD state were largely to blame IMO. Lessons to be learnt there.

More unpacking the details of the season in terms of the climate and the next month’s outlook in the link above.

I appreciate everyone who has read the blogs this season. Even in a season as poor as this one, the discussion and the observations, and particularly the trip reports here have been high quality. Hopefully there’s a little more snowfall left in the season :)

Check out the surface temp anomaly that was over Siberia in January. +7 to +10 over a huge area.

Hakuba Cortina was closed yesterday and has 50-60cm sitting there after a day of subzero and a night at about minus 15C. It'll be crowded as hell, but the snow will be champagne blower.

Looks like a repeat again tonight, maybe 40 in Otari, 20 if we're lucky in Hakuba. Its going to get nasty later in the week, so get out there all guns blazing if you can.

~150cm in Tenji the over the last 4 days, looking a treat, but at the same time very much needed, esp.with what's progged mid next week, could be 50mm+ of rain.

Tried to not look, but I couldn't resist. I was in Hakuba from the 26th of Jan, to the 5th of Feb this year, having had only one decent snow storm (looking like November most of the time - green). The day we left it obviously switched into some sort of snow armageddon. I went last year in Feb but to no new snow. Thinking it would be different we went a few weeks earlier this year. I'm at a loss! But so glad this year has turned around, after seeing such a massive impact to the economy (even took part in a climate change ride at Iwatake), I'm pleased to see it looking back to normal.

I hear ya buddy. Was in Myoko and Madarao at the same time - one great day aside it was essentially like spring skiing in Australia but without the base! Absolutely killing me watching this unfold since we left. Happy for those lucky enough to be there now though.

Folks in Hakuba are a tad worried.

Those in the know think up high like top Happo things wont be so bad. Lower runs are more of a worry.

Cant do anything but cope or choose another activity until it improves. Which it should by Sunday. Yay

I don't know if this can be of any help. However, i went to Madarao/Myoko in January 2018 roughly in the same period; the guy who picked us at the airport told us that we might have had problems reaching our destination, as it was snowing like it never did before, and he was right. The day the after the arrival it was still fantastic with more snow falling but.... the second day the temperature went up to 12 degrees and the third day it rained!. I still could go out on the fourth day but i let you imagine that what was left, was slushy-type snow.
What i mean is stuff can happen, unfortunately.

Meanwhile, living in present, shiga kogen is looking bloody marvellous. I’m guessing 30cm overnight and it is still snowing. I’m sure the other Nagano areas will be similar.

The problem is the large stationary high pressure a few thousand km to the SE of Japan. It won't move away until after Sunday. It's directing southerlies into southern Japan. And another positioning itself from Sat 22nd.
i.e. Had those highs not been so strong, some of these troughs could be producing good snow above 1000m.

Shiga Kogen snow held up pretty well today. Lovely touring day. 48kms skied. It wasn’t like yesterday. Not by a long shot. But still nice. Tomorrow looks a bit dicey. 7 degrees.

BTW, those low pressure troughs are dynamic!
A slight difference in location and timing could make all the difference between clear skies and rain.
So the next few days' forecasts are very important!!!
I was just looking at the radar, and it is showing the cloud clearing about 9am.

    ...... Stay tuned

Depends where in Aomori they're talking about. (Aomori city?)
That could be close for Aomori City, except there should be more snow than that, and not from Sunday afternoon.

Freeze levels after the rain started:
    - Hakuba. Rain started at 11pm, 1.5 degrees at 7am, but going up. 18mm rain so far at the weather station near the station. (would most probably be snowing 200m up the slopes right now)
    - Nozawa. Rain started at 5am, 2.0 degrees at 7am, but going up. 1mm rain so far.
    - Yuzawa. Rain started at 5am, 4.3 degrees max at 7am, but going up. 0.5mm rain so far.
    - Sekiyama. Rain started at 3am, 9.9 degrees max at 6am, but going up. 1.5mm rain so far. Snow depth decreased from around 73cm to 40cm this morning.
