That's part of why we all love skiing right? Chasing the elusive powder conditions. If it was powder all the time it would be so special!

This is the reason why most people's impressions for a whole season is not accurate, unless you're in Japan for the whole season!!! ;)
... In that case, there's a dependence time and location. Once I did my usual trip to Hakuba, and went for a pre-planned trip to Shiga Kogen, I did an extra 7 days at Shiga Kogen in 3 trips to eliminate most rainy days that were hitting lower resorts every 4-5 days.

That reminds me of Skiing in NSW out of Sydney (back in the day when day passes where cheaper). We used to ski Perisher when freeze levels where 1600m+ and when the levels dropped we headed straight to Thredbo. Wait a minute, that's putting Australian conditions and Japan's into context!! Now that's lowering the bar. LOL

It's so true, a "bad" season doesn't mean you have a bad ski trip.
Had some awesome weeks during bad seasons. Had some bad weeks during awesome seasons.
It depends how critical a good base is on the area you are skiing
In NZ most often the problem is sharks, so it's good to have a rock hopper if you need it
In Japan I've faced a bit of bamboo/sassa but at least this is pretty forgiving on your gear

Yes the ‘sharks’ at Remarks are pretty lethal - a ski tech in Qtn told me they can readily spot a Remarks’ repair over a Coronet or Cardi job.

Good old Buffalo was known for installing a new ‘grip’ pattern in one’s skis. Especially if a fresh dump covered the Cresta rocks. (;-)

Just trying to look at weather maps to figure out what is bringing this current snow. Very strange. Can anyone explain?

That low to the east of Japan. Probably why the snow is heavy.

Raining at a Appi yesterday morning but turned to snow later in the day. Sunny today; lots of untracked snow although heavy and wet. Some more lovin’ coming on Tuesday/Wednesday but I will have hung the planks up for the northern winter.

After snowing lightly all day at Shiga Kogen (probably 10-12cm), there were stars and clear last night, but nice to see more flakes this morning!!
However, I'm still expecting the cloud to burn off and clear. More good snow heading in early evening, with another low pressure trough in the Sea of Japan.
There's actually lake effect cloud pushing across southern Japan:

    Snowing here at Shiga Kogen.

    Looks good:

Low is in a goo location, with sea/Lake effect behind it:

Western Japan on the Sea of Japan side is getting cold.

Was reasonably busy on the weekend but will be quiet now. As usual, very little competition for the good stuff.

    Sounds good BH (lack crowds).

I understand Iwate is northern Honshu - do you have anything online to share roughly where your resort is please?

I guess theres no harm researching for a future trip?

Btw; Is it somewhere one could stop off (say from a Shink?) on the way to Hokkaido? Or too much bus/taxi required?

Or better with a car say like Hakuba? Cheers.

Others will be more knowledgeable than me but Appi Kogen is fairly easy to get to. From Narita, Skyline to Ueno, shink to Morioka, trainnto Appi Kogen where there is a courtesy bus to Appi or in our case a pickup by our pension host. There is a cheap shuttle bus to Shimakora/Panorama from Appi as well for a day trip.
With a car you could base yourself somewhere like Morioka. Check powder hounds for Iwate/Tohoku hills.
On this trip we went to Zao Onsen in Yamagata first and then Appi Kogen. Crispy’s Tohoku trip report/adventure would be worth having a look at.

Cams show people on chairlifts. Has Japan not closed ski resorts? (Glimpse of hope for Australian ski season perhaps????)

All resorts that can open(enough snow) are open. I was at Shiga earlier in the week during previous dump and everything was running, amazing day at Kumanoyu too light dry powder and few people.

Snowing in Matsumoto, coming down hard and good accumulation on the ground.

It happens about once every 4-5 years, snow with cherry blossoms.

Woke up to a couple of cm this morning (approx 1100m, Kitakanto), not that it's much use to anyone at this point.
Still snowing but I expect it will turn to rain. I guess this will be the last accumulation of the season. I hope so actually, as I don't really want my garden getting squashed flat.

30cm snowfall in a day in some places in Tohoku too and it's cold this morning. By the way at 1100m asl in Kitakanto?. Then, it's Nasu, Nikko, or Katashina village?.

Edit: Asama comes from Mt.Asama?. But, it's not in Kitakanto.

Hakkoda wasn't an exception: two unusually very warm days to start with and then rain on the third and snow on the fourth. as someone has observed the gondola was closed during the snowfall as well and as a consequence we could ride only 3 days out of 5. it doesn't matter i'll be back again :snowboarder:

Where is Japanese Super Hot and Humid Summer 2020 thread:whistle:?. It's been super hot June this year, but finally, rainy season has officially come in Tokyo region:cool:(I like Japan's rainy season if compared to the very hot & humid mid summer coming after the rainy season:p)
