    From JMA weather station sites since midday, to 2pm): (to be updated)

    - Takada, 13m: 0cm snow (+0cm)
    - Yasuzuka, 126m: - degrees, 0cm snow (+0cm)
    - Tsunan, 452m: - degrees, 0cm snow (+0cm)
    - Shinano-machi, 685m: -degrees, 3cm snow(+3cm)

    Central Japan resort areas:
    - Yuzawa, 340m: - degrees, 0cm snow depth.(+0cm)
    - Sekiyama(near Myoko), 350m: - degrees, 0cm snow depth.(0cm)
    - Hakuba, 703cm: -degrees, 2cm snow depth. (+2cm)
    - Otari (near Cortina), 550m: - degrees, 1cm snow depth.(+1cm)
    - Nozawa Onsen, 576m: -degrees, 2 cm snow depth.(+2cm)

    Hokkaido:
    - Kutchan (near Niseko), 176m: -degrees, -cm snow depth. (+-cm)

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The places I get my cues from, for snowfall and freeze level are:
    - Takada. About 2km from the sea, elevation 13 metres. This usually has substantial amounts of snow through the season (often 2m+ base). This is a good indicator for: 1 How much precip there is close to the coast. 2. how cold it is at sea level.
    This is a good indicator for Myoko & Hakuba, and Nozawa Onsen to some extent.
    - Yasuzuka. It is the Niigata foothills, 15km from the sea, and 25km due north of Nozawa Onsen and 35km NW of Yuzawa. Elevation 126m. This is a great indicator for precip a little ways from the coast, with just enough elevation to get substantial snow. You can get a feel for temperature and snow for the eastern Nagano resorts and Niigata
    - Tsunan about 30km from the coast, in line with Yasuzuka. 20km on the road from Nozawa Onsen, & 10 km SE of Cupid Valley, 452m elevation. It cops huge amounts of snow.
    - Shinano-machi (just across the border in Nagano, about 10km south of Myoko, at 685m. A good indicator for inland penetration, and amount of snow hitting the south side of Myoko resorts (e.g. Suginohara)
    it’s cold and steady wet snow - should be up at base camp in 30/40 mins, expecting the bus to take longer than normal up to
    Snowing hard Otari way, now 23cm on the Tsugaike road cam, but not so much in Hakuba and yes, I know that's usually the case. I hope Happo has the guns running because I don't think Ullr's going to get the lower courses open on his own.
    Ok first day at madarao (only done one run)
    The good news - 60 cm of snow overnight
    Still lightly snowing
    2 lifts spinning one of which is the beginner chair
    Only open currently to mix station
    10 min queues
    took a hike and beautiful powder nice and deep
    Needs another metre to fill in trees
    Resort is surprisingly quiet I assume before the new year eve rush
    by madarao standards it’s bit disappointing hoping the snow next week opens up more terrain
    properly head to myoko or nozawa tomorrow unless some has any recommendations of secret pow
    Went to Myoko-Akakura and kanko today.
    Good choice as more terrain is open than madarao, and obs bigger resort . Prob a base of about 30 - 60cm. We are making the most of the conditions.
    snow Held up pretty well to Be honest, however it’s a sorry state the amount of snow On the mountains.
    They need snow and lots of It and soon. It’s too late for our trip now but hoping for Those coming soon that the switch is flicked in the Honshu area ASAP!
    As mentioned previously:
    From here:
    https://www.ski.com.au/xf/threads/japan-general-tips-for-when-and-where-to-go-for-snow.69888/
    Other points to consider:
    1. In central Japan early season(December), the snow line is higher as the coldest weather has not yet arrived. This often means that snow depth below 1000m is thin.... there is also more chance of rain below 1000m. It's best to go for the higher resorts, or go further north.
    2. The early season winds are often more westerly, so go for areas closer to the coast or with more westerly aspect, if in central Japan... this will favour northern Honshu, since there is more exposure to westerly winds.
    However, Moscow is 8000km from Vladivostok!!!
    Valdivostok is today higher than average, at +1C. But over the next week, the forecast is close to average
    Snowing in Hakuba - 800m. Moderate.
    Forecast for freeze level rising from 1500m to 2000m. Will see how long the white flakes stay around before becoming moist.
    Well I have Furano as an option B but I'm hopeful I don't have to change plans (I'm sure Furano is great but it's not what I planned.)
    I'm aware Hokkaido is behind with their snowfall as well.
    I'm heading to naeba next Monday for a few days with the family, and the forecasts (from tomorrow) are looking especially tasty.
    At the moment it's a wet dreary day in Osaka
    It's not much fun to ride in this sort of snow. Is usually foggy up high on these westerly systems.
    Coming down good in Hakuba, maybe 7-8cm so far. About zero C, but still floaty flakes, so no sign of a flip to rain. I expect it to keep up for a while.
    Hakuba Cortina closed again today, so that tells you where we are so far.
    Pretty much all of Madarao is now open and connecting to tangram. Tangram side is a bit patchy
    top two lifts are still not running yet maybe need
    Another 30cm or so to at least get groomers open at the top
    was raining earlier it much and not heavy but snow is like glue...but had fun playing regardless. Used the opportunity to practice landing jumps and little tricks,
    hoping we have a snowy end of the week...
