And the ski resort today
Snow on Mt Fuji this morning. And two lenticular clouds over the top!!!
Already posted elsewhere, but will leave here too as this thread seems the more logical place for it.
First snow on Asama this morning. Early this year, and a good solid coating.
Taken with a fancy new camera
Most people on this forum are happy to see Autumn snow, but a lot of people who went to mountains for the beautiful Autumn color last weekend were disappointed. Mid October is mid Autumn, but it can snow on tall mountains such as Japanese alps. Many were climbing those mountains for this kind of Autumn color but what they saw was "white mountain"
The same place the day before yesterday (Saturday)
Looking like for the NH season:
A basinwide moderate (possibly strong) La Nina this winter.
A positive QBO
Atlantic SSTs favourable for a +NAO
North Pacific SSTs favourable for a Aleutian Ridge.
Average growth of Stratospheric Polar Vortex into winter, potential for SSWs later.
Phase 3-6 MJO centred tropical base state
Low sea ice in Barents-Kara Sea.
Average snow coverage in Siberia.
The outlook IMO is in general not looking so great for Japan, but I will need to finalise some observations on Siberia and the AO in November.
Thats nice of you, trying to make us all feel better about missing out..
It seems the weather station near our lodge in Fukushima at 824m asl was - 1.6 C this morning. The ski resort bases near the lodge / weather station are at 1000m asl, so precipitation could be snow even at the bottom of the ski resorts.
it shouldn't be long before the snowman appears on the JMA reports
Here in Yokohama, as of the 20th October, the temperature is already lower than average for the whole month, and there's still 11 days of the coldest part of October left.
Definitely feels like autumn has come on quickly this year. Overnight temps here suddenly switched from around +10C to hovering above freezing without much in-between. Looks like next week should bring a stretch of beautiful autumn days too.
Snow in them that hills this morning. Looking at Nishi Dake next to Furano Resort. A lot of moisture in this weather last night and today and around 6 degrees most of the day at around 200m ASL. So working on an adiabatic lapse rate of approximately 6 degrees (different rate for wet and dry air but just approximating) per thousands meters, I'd say Asahi Dake will have quite a good snow fall out of this. Around 1100m at the base of the gondola. Also looking like snow at town level in about 8-10 days from now, which is pretty normal for the beginning of November.
Looks like Hakuba got some nice snow up high. Always love seeing those pictures of snowy peaks and autumn leaves in the valley.
We had rain with chunks of ice in it yesterday - not sure if hail or some other phenomenon as it wasn't thundery... soggy graupel perhaps? Mountains were capped in snow again this morning.
Snow above the top of the gondola station at Happo today:
Zao Onsen this morning (around the ropeway station)
And this is Fukushima Pref / Aizu region(roughly 1500m asl or higher is covered with snow). The first snowcap of this year is 17 days earlier than last year ( = the worst season in 50 years or longer) and 2 days later than average year (local media are reporting so)
