Here's a few views and some Orange lifts staff from 1980.

Thanks benzer. That windcheater is very cool, look after it as one day it may qualify as an historic artefact. [IMG]

I'm just old enough to remember the two lift companies. I always wanted to ski Blue, but as a child, Orange tickets were bought for me. [IMG]

One of my best days at the snow was when some kindly adult gave me 3 or 4 Blue lift strip tickets, it was like a (brief) visit to a whole new resort! [IMG]
I got to experience the runs served by the Bull Run T-bar, Chamois Poma, etc. Sadly I never got to ride Village or ski the runs served by it. [IMG]

It looks like Blue didn't have a logo, but I may play around with the image on the windcheater and use that.

Those anecdotes about George the Cook and lift staff hiding from Hans are great, so are the pics, especially that one of the floating bull wheel. They give a great impression of your experience at Buller 30 years ago.

I actually got used to them by the end of the season.
It was due to Georges cooking and shoveling snow I went from a skinny to muscles poking out my ears by the time the year end.

So you imagine Georges reaction when I moved from Blue to Orange.
And you could probably guess what he named me.

I remember the guy behind him too.

The first two look like Bourke st. I'm pretty sure the peeps queuing in the background of the first photo were at the bottom of the nutcracker. Not sure about the location of the last photo. Does anyone recognise the weatherboard building in the background?

    I reckon.
That was on the other side (Orange lifts side), 1960 would have been the T bar.
The side the pic is taken from (Blue lifts side) looking uphill with the tree line on the far side looks like out front of old Abom.
There isn't a queue and no lift was there in 1960, that mess on the ground is from the tree right there (you can just see a branch of it) and the Bk St chair would be going overhead a few years later in 64

As Ive discussed before about Buller photos is that in ye olden days taking a camera out in the snow to take shots with film you have to get processed back in town meant people simply didnt take a camera out to shoot pics unless there was really something worth taking pics of.
Shots in poor conditions are limited portait shots of people but shots of landscapes simply too much cost and bother to take shots of poor snow conditions and bad weather.

Digital cameras they take pics of everything from snow to meals they eat in the cafes.
So we have been getting the good the bad and the ugly over the last 20 years in images.
And keepers are few but they get shown anyway.

I used to have worse than that. A strip of snow from BB2 across baldy to koflers running down the t-bar to the base of the summit quad and a nice nice strip of snow coming down the summit. That strip eventually grew down to the mid-load on LBS too.

2006 was a fairly decent season in NZ and my dad sent me a news paper article with a sat image of most of the south island covered with snow. just to rub it in.

All images have some worth. Depends what you are looking for. Superficially, you value snow cover. It is much more than that. Stories behind the images, for one.

Well if its a story you want VSG then a story you shall get!

Turns out that lovely snow gauge on family run is dedicated to my cousin, Ben Fleming. Sadly as we lived in different countries i only ever got to meet him a few times and only one of those was at buller but ive got nothing but good memories of him, mostly from family birthdays as a kid.. Was lovely to visit the place he loved more than anywhere else. Id love to be able to ride/ski as well as he could one day.

It looks like the back of the original Firn lodge on the Avenue just below Bourke Street. The line of the building and the location of the two windows match my childhood recollections of the lodge from the late sixties and early seventies.

Great story mate. I grew up on the hill with Ben and even though we were both skiers we enjoyed discovering snowboarding together during its early years at Buller around '91.

That is awesome man! His reputation is crazy up there, from what ive heard everyone said he was a natural on both skis and a board, having said that his brother blew me away the first time i went out for a slide with him! I still remember all the photos my grandma had of him up in the house, busting gates!

    Are you sure ?
    I know Pete..
He was on the 81 Blue crew, mates with Chris HW (not Orange crew)
Caught up some years later doing some car repairs for him.
Saw Pete in 2009 and did a few runs on Cow Camp and had a chat on the Tee about the old days and was telling me about a place he was building down the hill.

Sorting through some stuff on an old PC and found a lot of snow cams images from Buller as well as other Vic resorts...I must have been bored in 2006 because I made some gifs out of them. If anyone is interested in the cams images (seasons ranging from 2004-2007) I can upload them
