On the century-scale blizzard that wasn't, for once GFS seems to have nailed it while ECMWF missed badly. Seems some Americans need to learn the art of model-watching: http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/how-meteorologists-botched-the-blizzard-of-2015/ (Must say I glanced at GFS yesterday and couldn't fathom what all the fuss was about.)

Also, GFS has just had another major upgrade: http://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/GFS/impl.php

Resolution has doubled to about 13 km, and the full-res run now extends out to 10 days (previously 8). And the SST field used seems vastly improved. We may need to watch it more closely this year.
