Zeroz, that's like betting on red at roulette because it's been black the last 6 rounds. It's still the same chances each time around, the weather Gods don't go "well I've given them crap seasons for 6 years, I think I better give them a good one this year. As I said before, it's not worth speculating about the long term winter forecast for Australia, it just never turns out to be correct, our weather is just too complex and unpredictable for even computer models to come anywhere close.

The effect of climate change however is having an impact IMO, our temps are so marginal that even a small temp difference of about 0.5 degrees makes a difference. I remember all the rainy days we had in August that could have been at least wet snow if it was about 0.5- 1 degree cooler

I know I've spoken out against speculating but a declining La Nina seems to have a good effect. CC, we have been in La Nina for a long while now do you think there is a good chance it will begin to decline around winter and thus increase our chance of a good snow season?

    hopefully the chickens are malting.

I was told by the lady at Berridale Pub that if the Chickens are malting in February its going to be a good season.

my prediction: 10cm fall around mid-april, early may (give or take 10cm)- BUMPER SEASON forecast. Disappointing season with around two 40cm DUMPS (give or take 40cm)

You have been going on about 2012 being a good season for so long now. You'd look a bit like a rusty [auto-flamin-censor] if it was crap this year [IMG]

I remember, would you believe, 2000 was a very long season, first season snow boarding, epic. Though of all the years in Australia, one monday in 2014 either July or August, was some of the deepest driest powder I have ever ridden at Thredders. All weekend, the window galed at around 90 - 100 klm, Thredbo was closed, and half of Australia on 6 tbars at Perisher; the wait about 25 minutes for a 5 minute run. Everyone had had enough and took off back for the working week. Well would you believe it, Thredbo opened Monday morning and the entire mountain close to 1 meter deep of dry powder. At one point I had to crawl out of the Golf Course across to Funnel Web it was so deep. And riding the deep powder near vertical walls of Funnel Web was bullshit!. And I have made several trips to Japan to know what good powder is....

I recall a break in the weather was forecast in July so everyone planned a sicky .... Thredbo workers went to Perisher and Perisher workers went to Thredbo. :D

On that day I recall traversing across the Olympic face on my own, with a lot of cloud swirling about and I stopped to gather my bearings and movement and ..... the clouds parted as a lent against the steep snow face and I looked up to a rather large cornice looming over head .... and thinking .... I might just get the hell out of here !!!

Was epic, all winter and the funny thing is as it was my first winter I didn't really give a lot of thought to it being a "big winter". Everyone just kept wishing that the sun would come out.

Caravan was fairly buried at Friday Flat, made quite a bit of coin shoveling snow for lodges, just me and a mate random door knocking with a shovel.

I skied the Eyre t-bar in the third weekend of October. In some places the t-bar ran in a trench that was over head high. In late December Thredbo could have been open with skiing down to Kareela station on the old Crackenback chair.

Liechardt T Bar was in a very steep trench as well that when people fell off they took out the next few lots of people into a screaming heap. We would jump\ski over the face sliders to avoid getting caught up in the carnage.

I am old enough to tell you from first hand experience , the great swell of '74 is no myth nor is the season of '81. I was too young to surf in those great swells of '74 but I do remember them well, like watching waves break over the old North Narra surf club eventually ripping it apart. I wasnt too young to be on ski in '81 though and remember thinking that this is as good as it gets in Aussie. The descriptions of it by previous posters are accurate but hardly does it justice. Freaking Awesome is what it was.

It was tongue in cheek .... I was born in 1960 and lived them both. Watching the German Bank break from Dee Why to out past Long Reef, actually throw out and break. You could feel it shake the ground.

I nearly drowned in the '74 swell, out the back of Cronulla rock pools, in the rip coming off the point.
Then went for my first ever ski trip in '81 and thought " Well, they call it the Snowy Mountians. what' s all the fuss about?"
    I realised the following year.

    The topic is:
The Perfect Australian Weather System (For Snow)

    It's NOT:
"I nearly drowned in the '74 swell, out the back of Cronulla rock pools, in the rip coming off the point."
"Liechardt T Bar was in a very steep trench as well that when people fell off they took out the next few lots of people into a screaming heap."
"Thredbo opened Monday morning and the entire mountain close to 1 meter deep of dry powder. At one point I had to crawl out of the Golf Course across to Funnel Web it was so deep. And riding the deep powder near vertical walls of Funnel Web was bullshit!."

None of these mention details a weather system that produces snow....
