With full length 3/2 steamers and a balmy 22C water temp.
Was talking to (not so) old mate in Surf Culture about surfing and swimming at Bondage and lamenting that wetties are now a cheap commodity and not a hindrance to paddling ..... means winter still crowded and when warmer, dudes and dudettes only get out of the water when exhausted rather than when suffering hypothermia.
Also picked up a replacement Billabong 2mm back zip spring suit for Solomons next week...... will spend more time scuba than surfing but also have a couple of days in Papatura, so may get a wave fix.
Anyone else old enough to remember when Ron Harding American Surfer wetsuits were the duck's nuts?
Funny thing is; a week ago I was down the gong and every single surfer (at least a doz) were in Boardies.
It's def a Bondi thing. So many noobs too, which no doubt would be a Surf Shop's key demo.
old mate was out in boardies out front of the job here this am.
air temp was 7 degs, water temp 20 ish…..
I'd have reached for the 3/2 tbh.
and yes my first wettie was an American
long sleeve smoothie vest .
front zip iirc
was the Noosa winter with boardies back in the day
I swear I can feel the temp change from 24C to 23C i.e. from warm to "I need my wettie".
Haven't surfed at all this week but now with the wind chill dropping I think my next session will be opting for the long arm / short leg rubber option.....
If you went out in the middle of the day I reckon you could still do boardies/wettie top at the moment, as long as it's not blowing a gale with a bitterly cold W/SW blowing
3-5' here in Bali
Offshore , warm water , warm breeze !
Still see the occasional hipster up here using the old beaver tail smoothie. Someone must be still making them?
@Zimbooo not even divers are using beaver tails......
Yeah, they used to be 2 piece didn't they. Sleeveless longjohn with a longsleeve vest with beaver tail over the top.
I just typed in "beaver tail wetsuits" and found the following............
Bloody Hipsters....... noseriders, beaver tails, surf'n the points like McTavish!!!!
FWIW for me in Sydney I’ve still been surfing at the NBSS with my 1.5mm long sleeve top (https://www.ripcurl.com.au/mens/wetsuits/jackets/aggrolite-15mm-lsl-jkt.html?colour=0854) which I use for dawn sessions most of summer, and a couple of sessions the last week or two with 1mm neoprene boardshorts (https://www.ripcurl.com.au/mens/wetsuits/jackets/dpatrol-1mm-neo-shorts.html) or still just normal boardies. Works better for me than a spring suit, and I generally stick with that combination until some time after June long weekend at least, then back to it again as soon as it is warm enough after the coldest water period for the year.
(Sidenote: So I don’t sound purely like some sort of RipCurl fanboy, or worse some sort of “micro-influencer”, my previous thin RipCurl neoprene top failed on me after only a couple of years - the neoprene particularly around the neck (1) lost its stretchiness, and (2) was leaving black sticky rubbery stains on my neck - which I don’t really think it should have done, especially as I always was my rubber gear out in fresh water after every session... other than admittedly I probably had 150-200 sessions with it).
Anyway, that gear I’m wearing currently is still plenty warm enough for me at dawn, even on a couple of recent early mornings when the carpark temperature has been <10C and also a fair sort of offshore wind blowing. I’m not super-tough or anything, just the water simply hasn’t been cold enough yet to need any sort of serious rubber.
I did put my steamer in the car yesterday morning, but only to show our beginner the (nice warm, and super-quick-drying) orange fur in a FlashBomb wetty and why (IMHO) it makes for a much better wetsuit than the construction of her current steamer.
Point Leo looks like the best it has been all of 2019 this Sunday and Monday. GAME ON !
Don't McTavish surfboards come with bolts preinstalled for roof-rack mounting?
(denies owning a McTavish Carver......)
Before I could afford my first decent steamer......... used to wear a long sleeve vest under longjohn wetsuit....... would get a bit waterlogged when duck diving (or more likely and eskimo roll back then).
fwiw reports filtered thru of 2 to 4 foot...…
tells me the swell magnet would have been solid 4 plus and cranking...
I am surfing in a full length chest zip 3/2 steamer with booties, and a hood and gloves on standby. Water temp. here in Vic. is 17 C. with cooler pre winter winds .I use Mrs. Palmer's cold water wax all year round.
Well I started out with a footy jumper hahahaha
secret spot down near Eden this morning.....
From the bench.......
Surfing tomorrow arvo Got absolutely skunked on the south that weekend following Anzac day. Looking forward to (hopefully) some chunky corners tomorrow arvo.
yeah another short sharp blast from the Tasman L.
Looks like another good weekend for GCR comin up
I'll head out for either a lunch or arvo check this arvo and try and grab a few pics of the local, gonna get nice and chilly today with this cold front coming through
we have new group of IRB crew starting training at Molly on Sunday morning !!!
if it's too sketchy we won't put them in the water.
We have got swells from the bass Strait events previously but more often than not it's flat due to the swell travel path so I was expecting the post Anzac outcome. This is a fast moving system but it's proximity and it's got a bit of a 'tail whip' that should mean we get some swell in the south - fingers crossed anyway.
(Cue “Four Yorkshiremen” sketch: )
When I was a lad...
The Northern Beaches Secret Spot wasn’t doing it this morning - small and right on low tide when our beginner and I checked it about 6:15. Texted a friend that she should go back to bed, then we decided that we would do a beach-check tour - in case of a rideable wave somewhere else - on the way down for an early coffee at Zubi at Bilgola.
Lucked into a wave at Avalon around the middle of the beach. Only a foot or so with occasional larger sets, but really nice. Very warm water, no wind, generally extremely comfortable conditions for surfing. We surfed for about 90 minutes. Photo between sets after we finished but indicative of the nice conditions:
I managed to pull into a couple of cute little cover-ups and between those good waves generally kept myself busy catching small fun short ones that mostly ended in closeouts, and our beginner practiced getting onto the waves earlier and standing up more quickly and positively - she’s doing well but a bit more size would give her a bit more time.
Hopeful of more/better waves tomorrow and Sunday.
3-4' here in Bali
Offshore , warm water , warm breeze !
About to go for an arvo check to see what it's like....sun is back out down here in the 'Gong
is phlat af
Like, as in funny. I'm taking Monday off so we can have the full mothers day, I'm hoping that will not be the case on Monday. Will try and get my fill on the sat late / early Sunday regardless.
Yep not a lot doing. The calm before the storm hitting tomorrow....
@W0nkey D0nkey is out there somewhere in the distance
I really was.
Went for a swim around that time.
Still searching in southern Wales for a wave, air temp 10c and the water is freezing.
glad it's not moi !
Monday still looks prime for surfing at Pt. Leo.
She’s pumping this morning....for ants
@Donzah spotted in the car park suiting up
FMD.... that last monster......
Cape Fear Event is on Monday.
might be an "office day" !
We “attended” the NBSS as always but the swell failed to show up.
My most regular surfing friend, our beginner and I walked almost 2 laps of the beach to await the coffee shop opening and one of our other friends ran a lap of the beach. Seemed a reasonable alternative to just giving up and going home straight away.
However one of our friends DID actually paddle out and against all probability caught a couple of truly tiny waves (here he is recuperating between the epic waves):
We checked Avalon after I collected pies for my starving kids and it was pretty much just as flat.
2-4' here in Bali
Offshore , warm water , warm breeze !
Anyone notice a pattern hahahaha
Feels like swell is coming though
Its the vibe
looks a bit more cross than off.
Will be an ok wave on the incoming tide, nice period but not enough size to be really good. needs a bit more S in the swell to really get into Westernport to be epic. If Tassie wasn't there Westernport would pump on the back end of swells much more frequently.
All in favour of moving Tassie 1000km E say I.
How about we just attach the joint to the bottom of NZ.
3 foot on the sets down here now.
blowey af tho.
Just found this is being made again.
The best antiseptic ever for sea ulcers etc, the real pussy ones that won't go away....
Update, there are now waves (“It’s the vibe” triumphs again - don’t you love saying that and every Australian smiles knowingly and everyone from anywhere else just gives a blank look)...
One of my operatives just sent this from Mona Vale:
Not the best photo's but a very satisfying surf.
better and cleaner than what was on offer up this way.
edit was that this morning looks before the wind came up.
True , but close enough to off hahaha
