Cheers, I still wonder how many times that happens and i've just not seen them, i'm not real worried about them so don't sit out there looking for them, eye lines usually up looking to the horizon for the next set.

I don't have the dorsal fin app either cos i don't want to know but checked the website to see if there have been reports, fisheries tagged a 2.7m white at Ballina this morning but this was bigger than that

Checked the Shark apps before and no sightings from around that time in your area. Hopefully no one gets hurt.

You can tell when it's just not right and it's time to get outa there.
Glad you trusted your instincts not the froth , and all the crew are safe.

I find Dorsal to be a bit ott.
It has it's merits but gets soo much false reporting from the punters that don't really appreciate what they are looking at.
It spikes on the holiday weekends etc.
Been over this a few times here so I'll zip it. ;)

It really was the size of the thing, there was no mistaking it was a dolphin because to was more than twice the length of any dolphin i've seen around here and would be more than 4 time the mass

Hence the other surfer on beach who saw it from an even further distance wondering if it was a baby whale

I surfed yesterday morning. When checking the NBSS about 6:30 we saw the 30-40cm mullet that have been hanging around quietly/happily for the last couple of weeks BUT yesterday they were very agitated - almost constant parade of fish jumping 1m in the air. Definitely being chased by "some sort of marine predator that didn't need to come up for air...". We didn't see any fins, but equally we didn't paddle out. It wasn't any good anyway.

Drove around to Avalon and had an hour or so near the middle of the beach (uninterrupted by mullet or things munching on them). Was 1-2' BUT with pretty brutal backwash. I got some ok waves and lucked into one really good one. The water remains super-warm and very clear and nice.

I didn't go for a look this morning; keeping my powder dry for hopefully a bit more size tomorrow and across the weekend.

Some fun ones a few beaches down at MV. Inconsistent, but hitting the bank nicely when they arrive.

Water way too warm for the steamer.

15sec period tomorrow could be fun!

Thinking of starting a "lack of surf thread".

Goldy has been shite. Talking to an old mate, a shaper of some renoun and he made the big call "worst Autumn for surf ever". Might have to agree.

I'm at the beach early every morning, run the dog and have a surf or a body bash. Haven't left the board in the car so much ever. In fact, I've haven't even thrown a board in the car the past week or so.

So, is there legs in alack of surf thread;)

I thought the Goldy has been looking sick the past few days. Clean 3ft and good waves from the beaches to the points.

Anyway here's something you might enjoy.. https://www.swellnet.com/news/swellnet-analysis/2019/05/16/verification-poor-east-coast-autumn

I’ll almost certainly be surfing somewhere. Obviously will start at the Northern Beaches Secret Spot and hopefully will just paddle out there, but my mind is (relatively) open.

I will likely have our beginner with me, so I have to be a bit mindful of where she won’t get psyched out by the people or wrecked by too-fast/too-sucky takeoffs. She’s pretty game - we’ve had her paddle out to some Near Death Experiences before - but I’d rather she enjoyed the session rather than just survived it, even if it means I have a grovel rather than a challenging surf for myself.

MV in front of the SLSC looked fairly surfable a couple of days ago (less so down towards Golf Ave) when I poked my nose in. I do enjoy surfing there; just I only know one or two people who live there so most often if I end up surfing there it is with only people I don’t know, which I don’t enjoy as much...

Agreed on the (lack of) rubber required for Sydney at the moment. I’m more than comfortable in my 1.5mm top still for my early sessions, and any afternoon bonus surfs I have tomorrow or on the weekend will very likely just be in a rashie and boardshorts.

Can I get a bit of collective wisdom from all here ?
I bought the Al Merrick Fever a couple of weeks ago , it was a custom order with 'Gun Glassing' 6x4x6 (as is all my boards)
Have a look at the depressions on the tail after about 6 surfs on the thing .
I scraped the wax off my Webster DS ( 6 months old ) and it had SFA depressions , same as the Jye Bryne Cortez Fish (12 months old ) .
I bought it here in Bali at same prices as Australia .
Am I peaking over nothing, or should it be a bit tougher ???? Fever.jpg

That looks like the result expected from a single layer 4oz comp / pro board.
I would be demanding a replacement, there is NO WAY that is 6 and 4 on the deck.
Wrongly glassed and not to order.
I would be taking in your other board glassed correctly and show them the difference between right and wrong.
Edit: one other possibility could be poor factory glassing conditions, ie glassing in a room not at the correct temp and also possible poor glass and resin quality. After all ...... It is Indo.
Edit Edit: could also be a bad blank without correct density but very rare these days if using well regarded blank manufacturers.
Either way.......not good enough to match what you ordered and should expect. 6/4/6 should be stroong.

There has been some SW swell and NW winds ( favourable conditions) here in VIC. Why not get a proper wetsuit , booties, a hood and gloves and surf here in VIC. in May and June?. The Water temperature is now 16 C. and slowly decreasing .

Two months in Sumatra! Gee hope they had all their shots. I’d be amazed if they come out of that trip without at least some reef related injury and / or at least one case of food poisoning

If it didn't cure for a week or two you might expect some depressions but no way not that much.

No way is that 6&4 on the deck, even without cure time. I used to make boards for a living and i would glass the ones I wanted to keep with 6 and a 3/4 4oz pad on the deck. Never had depressions like that. My Little Zapper Bourton has a 6 on the deck and I surfed it green put a couple of depressions in it and a biggie from the board hitting me but still nowhere near as bad as that.

Ya didn't get what you ordered.

The Northern Beaches Secret Spot was poor early this morning. Only about 2’, breaking only 10m from dry sand all the length of the beach (with still over an hour to go to high tide when I checked it) AND the road is being re-paved from the coffee shop to Kiddies’ Corner so it was generally not favourable in any way. No sign of the big school of fish though.

We surfed at North Av, mainly the rights into the rip. It was a bit busy but manageable. Sets were 3’+ with the occasional larger cleanup set coming through, making the mals without legropes more of a concern than usual.

Our beginner stood me up (some nonsense about uni assignments - I’m sure they would still be there waiting patiently for her _after_ a surf) but 3 of us had quite a good hour or so with about another dozen people on the same bank, so at about my upper limit for crowd-tolerance.

My handy-dandy GPS watch recorded it like this - it tracks paddling/drifting and general movement in the water very accurately and did a pretty good job of determining what was a ridden wave, I think it only missed detecting as “waves” about 3 that were either slow or short.

On again tomorrow morning - hopefully the NBSS will deliver us something on a lower (but rising) tide at dawn because Avalon is far too busy on weekends.

Also brief community service announcement for intending NBSS surfers: the road near the intersection of Ocean Rd and Palm Beach Rd (south end, just before the toilet block and coffee shop) is being re-paved on Monday so is likely to be difficult all day. Shouldn’t be any roadworks over the weekend though, as today’s re-surfacing work on the road south of the coffee shop is supposed to be done by tonight.

They all have significant personal first aid kits, food poisoning (whilst a pain in the arse) is not a issue as they have meds for all needs and they are all up to date regarding shots. Fingers crossed regarding the other stuff......boys have done lots of trips before to major waves/slabs so not stressed and they all have comprehensive insurance with evac. They can't do any more other than gooooooo..............as I did many moons ago.

Got back from Vanuatu a few days ago. Naturally it howled onshore the whole time and I missed a heap of good swell on the Surf Coast while I was away. C'est La Vie. Sometimes you need that sort of thing to remind you how good you've got it at home. Vanuatu was lovely though - and I did get in the water every day so not complaining. Shortboard didn't make it out of its travel bag mind you.

Surf Coast still pumping over the last few days. Yesterday was brilliant and today (below) a little smaller but still great. Warm weather, no wind, 2-4ft waves over the weekend. What's not to like.

No surfing for me for a while now, just too busy at the moment.

On another note, how crazy warm is it right now for late May and the water temps I'm seeing reported are still 20+ !

Definitely still (far) over 20C at the Northern Beaches Secret Spot. I got a text from a (non-surfing) friend who is in Mollymook today too; I’d been telling her during the week how warm the water was in Sydney still and she happened to be there at the beach for a short while today. Felt the water, couldn’t believe it, grabbed her swimmers and went for a swim.

Over the weekend I surfed both mornings at the NBSS - south end. Was pretty small and weak; the north end was bigger but breaking too hard and fast for my friends, so I chose company over sucky sandy barrels and closeouts. I rode my son’s CI Pod (which has 5l more foam than my normal boards) and it grovelled pretty well.

I also had an afternoon bonus surf at North Avalon just before sunset. The quality wasn’t great and there were a few too many out, but it was a nice afternoon.

This was South Avalon from the south end carpark about 6:15am yesterday - was a fair bit darker than the photo makes it look. There were already 3 or 4 out at LA too, that is definitely dedication!:

Anyone else watching Keramas? Wow some big names going down today.

I really love watching Jordy and Jules surfing but gee they are frustrating surfers to watch in heats, Jules in particular. Love the guy and he's an awesome surfer but gee his competitive head really needs some work.....
