I observe an inverse relationship between posting in this thread and snow froth - we need another dump :)

Had a failure-to-surf this morning. Went straight to North Av at 7am based on yesterday (the surf!) but it - while marginally bigger swell than yesterday morning - had far too much water over the banks and my friend and I didn't have time to wait it out. Already 4 mals on it and what rideable waves there were were NOT coming through in 6-wave sets, so the odds weren't in our favour. We drove to the NBSS (which as expected was very flat) and walked a lap of the beach to kill time before the coffee shop opened and to scope out the 'Joey for a likely area to surf early tomorrow.

Turned out - against our expectations - there _was_ a surfable wave just north of the north end carpark (too much seaweed all the way up at the 'Joey and not really pulling in the swell, and more-or-less dead flat anywhere south from bend-in-the-road) but we had left our boards in our cars parked at the coffee shop. Only a foot or so and a pretty short ride, but several banks offering quite ok little runners we'd both have been happy to get into if we hadn't a limited time window for surfing this morning - which our walk had already burnt up.

There's a few today on the "solid" side of two foot or "maybe" 3 footers.
depending how the glass is viewed.
GCR is breaking now on the lower tide with few lazy ones on offer no-one out if you keen.
might get head down for few hours and head South later see what is on offer if the day pans out ok from here..

Yep good new S'ly groundswell this morning though very inconsistent. Good 2-3ft sets at the south magnets when they come. Seemed to ease late morning.

Gee, we didn’t have it, and sounds like it has been and gone now :(

My friend and I were watching North Av (which normally pulls in a south swell fairly well) from 7-7:20 and it was only marginally bigger than yesterday, and more than offset by the tide being an hour higher.

She and I saw a couple of perhaps 2’ “rogue waves” on our walk up and down the NBSS and generally the set waves were a bit smaller than that. Surfable but needing “specialist equipment”.

Up at the ‘Joey which normally likes a S swell it was struggling to be 1’ - but it was the seaweed build up there rather than the lack of size that was the main problem. BTW Bilgola also is totally clogged with it this week.

Hopefully we’ll get something tomorrow - it’s not even as if going skiing is a good option at the moment...

Sorry no, I didn’t check the north end carparks at the NBSS for you’all, but no sign at North Av, and they were filming Home and Away down at the south end of the NBSS so we stayed clear. Clearly she has much more common sense than me in trying to find a wave in the flatness this morning and was already elsewhere...

Not happy to hear of tomorrow being flat either. If the water is still warm I might just swim out in my wetty and push our beginner into a few - she’ll be on my grovelling board anyway and I want to show her that if she paddled faster and got onto the waves sooner it would actually be a lot easier for her than she is making it for herself now (by paddling too slowly, then taking off too late, then panicking about nosediving before she’s had time to pop up and turn). She’s pretty game and will paddle out in all sorts of conditions but is being held back by just not committing hard enough to a wave early (sidenote: Easy for me to say I know, but I’m trying very hard for her not to be drawn to the dark side (bodyboarding) by my friend’s son, whose girlfriend she now is...)

Unrelated and semi on-topic. If you are thinking of a surf next weekend (22-23 June) at Mona Vale I just saw in the Northern Beaches Council weekly email that there is a chemical collection in the MV carpark 9am-3:30pm both days. It’s a good service but when i’ve seen it there before they take up more than half of the carpark for it.

I went surfing today at Point Leo. I caught a few waves and nose dived on a biggish one :-0 which was because I was a bit too far forward on my board. I am still a bit slow to pop up and once I do my balance is a bit iffy.
It was kind of busy at all the usual spots. Next Wed. is looking good for a surf down there too.
There was an off shore breeze, some sunshine and the swell had more push when I started which was at about 0930, one hour past high tide. I am wary of upsetting the locals , transgressing etiquette and the like , so I often turtle flip rather than paddle for a wave when there are others about. The sets were coming a quite a while apart . I had wet suit everything on . Only my face was exposed. The water temperature is 15 C.

I am posting some photos from today quite soon.

This snowless June means more winter surfing!!

Our beginner and I had a session with a friend early at bend-in-the-road on the NBSS. There was a bit more than a foot of swell getting in to the middle of the beach but the high tide meant it was only just breaking. Several of our friends arrived for an early, but turned around and went home without getting wet. Our alternative to paddling out was walking a lap of the beach (again, like yesterday) which was NOT going to happen - particularly because one of my feet is chafed from walking 5km in Crocs yesterday (pro-tip: don’t ever do that - not only is it a fashion mistake (apparently) it just isn’t good when wet gritty sand gets into them and you keep walking).

It was really quite ok this morning; lovely conditions, light offshore to glassy, warm and very clear water, just quite short rides. We had rather more fun than we thought we were going to when we were getting dressed.

Better than expected this morning at the NBSS - a bit more size and a smaller high tide was able to overcome the high tide occurring right smack bang in the middle of our window for our early today.

Wasn’t ideal conditions - a bit of backwash and funny doubling-up waves made the takeoffs a bit wonky - but most of the usual suspects ended up on the same bank off the north end carpark and we had a fun hour or so. It was about 2’ on the sets and enough push for those of us on shortboards to have a bit of fun but not too crunchy for the couple on mals.

Strangely it seemed to die off fairly rapidly after about 8:15 when we were just about done with our session, even though the tide was an hour after high then and it should have been getting a bit steeper and hollower. Funny, but surf is like that sometimes.

The dolphins put on a good show very near to us as they have been doing most sessions for the last couple of weeks and there was a fair sized school of bright blue fish (about 20cm long) on the inside section of the bank we were surfing. Not mullet and a bit smaller but plenty of them.

My most regular surfing friend shifted to her 4/3 steamer for the first time for the winter and then proceeded to be reminded of two things: (1) how much harder it is to get in and out of and paddle in vs her 3/2 steamer and (2) that she had meant to buy a new 4/3 over the summer because this one has a few places where the seams are worn out and leaking and offering cool jets of water through.

Here’s a photo before I paddled out, not anything particular as far as the waves in the photo (obviously between sets) but just quite nice light and a bit of a storm out to sea to the north.

I was in Victoria on the weekend and surfed Saturday down at Flinders..the wave size was a little inconsistent early but by the time my arms were shagged everything was lining up a bit nicer on the reef. Probably at the 2 to 3 foot mark. Reall good fun.

I didn't muster a surf yesterday so back into hibernation for a bit now.

Reckon 3/2 sealed is good between 12-16deg, at 11 deg i can surf about an hour and a half without boots gloves before i get the claw and nub foot. Above 16 deg i'll tough it out in a spring suit cos its to hot in the 3/2 sealed

@parkmonkey....... hope Theo didn't meet up with "big blue" ?
His Belgian family would never know if so? :(
Last mobile ping near Tallows, but no trace of belongings?
All fingers crossed....that he's just lost in the hills on mushies and not fallen to the hands of a human lunatic or big blue?

Good things come to those who wait. After minuscule weekend swell I can report that the bank at my new favourite quite secret point is in tact after some pretty decent swell action through early June. Only 2ft today with the odd 3 footer but given there is no crazy NE'r action I'm looking forward to future strike missions :)

Its so sad, the police said today the ping off the mobile tower isn't very accurate at all on where he was, they are saying they still have nothing after the cheeky monkey footage. Seeing his dad on the news is heartbreaking, its all just to strange and very concerning with the time that has passed, i'm not sure you'd enter the water fully clothed, there's nothing to really fall off into the ocean here but he's just gone without a trace :(

Yep, but it was that long ago when Jesus was just a boy. LOL
When we were in another rural island area exploring/looking for waves, we were held up by police/army at gunpoint who thought we were gun runners for the Moro liberation fighters. (thought our board bags where full of guns).
Funny now, but super scary at the time. Our accom was raided at night (no electricity, just kero lanterns), we were put up against the wall of the hut at gunpoint whilst they searched our bags etc etc. Ended up getting pissed with the Sargent and his mates that night. They had never seen surfboards before, nor had the locals who must of reported us as suspicious......called them speedboats.

On the SE Qld SN notes there is a screenshot of average size dbah with 30+ surfers out on a Tuesday. Far from all time but when I surfed on Monday I was the only one out, no one came and checked it, and we had the beach to ourselves!!

Long time lurker, occasional commentor, this morning surfer. Fun (very) 2-3' out the front of what should still be a hospital on the Northern Beaches of Siddernee. No photos, needed to be wet.

bit of size this morning on the South Co.
second shift , after I got the workers started ;).
few 4 or 5 foot bombs up North end.
    one smoker. yeeuw !
3 of us out in the end but the tide started to fill it up.
The Gurl surfed the dawny .
The boys reckoned it was better on the lower tide (and she was killing it - proud Dad moments).

The NBSS was good this morning: our beginner, another friend and I had a good early at the south end. Was 2'+ on the very regular sets and the occasional set a bit over 3' coming through.

Agreed the lower tide was more helpful; we got the better and more consistent waves at the start of our session. At the right tide, up the beach could have been awesome; it was pumping but too quick when I was there (and definitely not beginner-friendly, so I'd have been by myself if I'd headed up the beach).

Also our beginner treated me this morning to some awesome home-made chocolate brownies after surfing - she got up early and made a batch which we kept warm in a towel in the wetty bag while we were in the water. Showed the coffee shop owner that we had BYO'ed brownies this morning to have with our apres-surf coffee/chai. Photo of beginner, brownies and by luck a bit of a wave in the background:

Report in from young bloke and crew.
Made their way from Sth Sumatra (overland by a couple of buses over a couple of days) to Padang and then ferry over to Lances.
Their bums are parked at Lances now for a few weeks, ..............you still don't have to spend big coin to surf the Ments.
$AU35 a day for accom and 3 meals.
